I have been looking over the Facebook system trying to figure out how to "commit Facebook suicide".

It appears that it ain't easy to get your name off.

I was told that if you don't get into Facebook for awhile, it goes away? TRUE???

M.G. same story here. I signed on and even stuck a couple pictures on there and then all hell broke loose. I had everyone and his brother wanting to hook up, all kinds of advertising and my email box was overflowing. The best I could figure to do was get in there and delete what I could. I could not get my name off of there completely, so I deleted a bunch of letters so the name now looks like a person from china. Then I disabled. Well, I guess you are never long gone unless you change your email address, because I still get notices from facebook that there are people waiting for me to come back and hook up. I guess changing email would be the last straw, but I am at least on the unactive list.

I hope someone has a great idea to dump that deal altogether, so I will see what other that respond have to say.

Lettin' old folks on Facebook is like givin' a loaded semi-auto to a 4 year old....never a good idea.

As you deactivate your account, a page will come up that asks the reason for your deactivation. A checkbox at the bottom of that page is available to you that will terminate mailing from Facebook.

Delete everything you can.

remove all photos from your face book account and move your photos from linked accounts.

Check all boxes terminating e-mail responses.

And once you do this .... this is very important.

Never...Ever go to that page again.

NEVER! Not even to see if you are gone.

If you do, Facebook servers will see you as wanting to activate your "Dormant" account and reactivate it all without your permission needed.

Facebook insiders says it takes several months or more to kill a Facebook Account and it really isn't dead. There are so many back servers that getting all your stuff off is impossible. And if you look just once to see if you're gone .... you're back.

How is the weather where you are? You surely aren't back home are you?

I'm in California. Clyde and I had to go to San Jose yesterday. Took the long way home through SF and the weather was perfect.

Today in Fresno is probably the only 'good' day since we've been here. Cloudless and reasonably warm. "Good" is relative. It's still 40 to 60 degrees warmer than where you be.

Well, it doesn't exactly kill it. Just sort of puts it in the back of the Facebook file cabinet. They still have all the info.

One other thing Facebook does is give folks access to your pictures and they apparently can use them anywhere they want to. One of my photos ended up in the Chronicle a couple of months back.

Reckon I should've copyrighted it before posting.

Never understood why so many folks have a problem with FB. I've enjoyed it since signing up. I've got good spam filters, keep my spybot up to date as well as my virus protection. I just plain don't have a problem with junk. I've had a couple of folks want to "friend" me, but I do a bit of research and if they appear from out in left field, I just ignore them.

Also, (most important part) I NEVER do any of the game aps they offer and block all the offers that folks send me.

I think that's where most folks get the junk from..

Went on it just to get some "free" advertsing for the gunshop and promote SASS shooting and our club progress.

But I'm pulling it down now.

Ditto most of that!

Rather than ignore (it's a button you can use), I just leave the friend requests pending. Maybe someday, they will tell me who they are (in SASS ;))or I will meet them and I will accept them.

"Facebook sucks...period

IMO, ALL social networking sites suck and are totally stupid..or else they are for really insecure people that need reinforcement of their exciting lives from people they don't even know!"

Oh.......so THAT'S my problem! :D

Seriously, I have to agree with Nooga Kid and Allie. I just ignore friend requests from people I don't know.....or can't stand.

Log in, go to account, then account settings. At the bottom look for 'deactivate' to kill it. You can offer your reasons for leaving, or not.

It's much easier just to set up a website for your shop.

The main problem I had with facebook is it's just too much. People posting on your page carrying on conversations and sending you messages and asking questions and sending bumps and presents and games and.......

Kind of exhausting fer a coot like me.

Thanks, Pard!

I do have a website for the shop. www.wildwestarms.net

It is a little bit behind on photos and inventory links.

Actually I'm shutting the shop down while I'm at OEF.

Muchas gracias,

Mustang Gregg

Not sure what Facebook you all are using.... I've been on it for many years, since back when it was for college students only, and I have never gotten one piece of spam or advertising sent to me or posted on my page. I don't know anyone else who has ever mentioned any kind of spam. Worst I get is a friend request from someone I don't know every one in a while, just click ignore and it's gone. I think it's great. I've got friends and family that I might only see once or twice a year, and with FB it's real easy to stay in touch and stay in contact with them. But to each his own....

Things like "social networking" are a real problem for me. I think it leads to all kinds of problems. The world knows too much about all of us already. Why make it easier?? I don't have a telephone, use the internet off the satellite, encode everything I can, and if you have my address you still can't find me. I like it that way. I have never been to a reunion, don't answer any mail from supposed relatives, college alumni, etc. If I want to talk to someone I will find them. If you want to talk to me, it is possible, but I don't want to make it easy. Too long of a past in places that they didn't like me.

Maybe you haven't noticed but SASS is on facebook.

Many clubs have facebook sites.

I personally think it is the most dangerous place on the Internet but I have a VERY tightly controlled account just for SASS related use. There are several good articles available that will guide you through the process of setting up a secure account on facebook or removing an account that you no longer want.

This link is to a good tutorial on setting up a disposable fb account.

Hi Folks,

I am on FB. I block ALL applications and customized all my security settings. Only friends can see my stuff. I list no personal information. That means no school, no employment, wrong city, no birth year...

Regards,

Allie Mo

Alas...that's a bingo ;)

your FB friend ...GG
