Ethan Cord Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Howdy pards, Last Sunday at the Thunder Valley match I lost the front sight and retaining pin on my S&W Model 3. I have a hard time hitting targets with sights and it is even harder now! If you have a source for these parts I would sure appreciate you letting me know how to contact them! Regards, Ethan
Tom Payne 13115 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Did ya try calling S&W?? Maybe they can head ya in the right direction.
Wrangler Rich SASS #42157 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Now would be a good time to find an old 1800's dime and fit it to your barrel. A pin would be easy too.
Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Howdy I am assuming you are talking about an original Number 3 top break. There were actually five different models built on the #3 frame, but the sights might be interchangeable. You can call S&W but they have not made any #3s since about 1912, so they might not have any more parts. You can call Numrich Gun Parts. You could also post a question over on the S&W Forum, I'll bet somebody there could help you out. You could also give Happy Trails a call at the Smith Shop. Smith Shop Hap isn't taking on any new work, but he was a crackerjack Smith smith, and he might have some parts laying around. In a pinch, you can cut a dime in half and use it for a front sight. A vintage dime is nice and will be in keeping with your revolver.
Buffalo Dick, SASS #12880 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Assuming this is an original, you should check with David Chicoine.
Ranger Sgt. Jake McCandless #3368 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Assuming this is an original, you should check with David Chicoine. + 1 Here http://www.oldwestgunsmith.com/gunparts/swhome.htm Adios Sgt. Jake
Ethan Cord Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 Thanks Pards! I knew someone would point me in the right direction. Yes, it is an original Model 3 and I would like to keep it a stock as possible. The period coin was mentioned by a couple of my friends at the range and that will be my "Plan B" if an original is unobtainable. Ethan
Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 So as a S&W aficionado, I am curious. Exactly what have you got? There were about five different models built on the Number 3 frame; American, Russian, Schofield, New Model #3, and Double Action 44. Which one do you have?
Ethan Cord Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 I have a single action in .44 Russian. If you find the Thunder Valley topic here on the Wire and scroll down to Prof. Fuller Bullspit's post he has posted a link with pictures from the match. There are several of me that show the revolver in action. So as a S&W aficionado, I am curious. Exactly what have you got? Howdy Driftwood - Ethan's S&W is a New Model 3. Here's a photo of it in action last weekend at Thunder Valley: New Model 3 Follow the direction arrows above the photo to see more pics of Ethan and others at the match. Here's a photo of mine, which also saw action last weekend at Thunder Valley: New Model 3 Too
Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Great photos, thanks. Is that an original '73 too? Gotta love those New Model Number 3s. They were highly regarded as target pistols at the end of the 19th Century.

But not with the razor thin front sight and itty-bitty V-notch on the standard models.

I use safe loads and mostly black powder although I do run a little bit of the smokey-less stuff through the '73 and my 1st gen Colts from time to time. The S&W only gets shot with BP. I need to find me an '87 shotgun like Ivory Jack's one of these days.
