Poppy Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I have watched both in the last couple of days and it got me to thinking which i like better. My conclusion was the cast of Tombstone was way better.... Kurt Russell vs Kevin Costner - Both good give Kurt an edge Val Kilmer vs Dennis Quaid as Doc - Val Kilmer hands down Powers Boothe vs Lewis Smith as Curly Bill - Powers hands down Sam Elliott vs Michael Madsen as Virgil - toss up but Sam is one of my all time fav cowboys Michael Biehn in Tombstone was a better Johnny Ringo Thomas hayden Church and Stephan lang were better Clantons and Dana Delany... nuff said there... she is just so sexy to me So whats your pick
Tom Foolery U.S.M. #2348 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 TOMBSTONE Just finished it again a few minutes ago TF
Curley Cole, SASS #56849 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I agree with EE, they both were excellent for different reasons, but I do prefer Tombstone. I spent a good bit of time visiting with Peter Sherayko (Texas Jack) This weekend. We talked a lot about the move. The attention to detail was fasinating. and I introduced my pard Zyzzx Zeke to Peter and he was really blown away to meet him. Peter even gave us a couple of cd's and an invite to visit Caravans West....how cool. anyways. Tombstone first place, Wyatt Earp second place. curley
Spooky Joe, SASS #24061 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Tombstone. Enjoy both but if'n I had my druthers, Tombstone wins out. Big drawback to Wyatt Earp, IMHO, is Kevin Costner. In all his movies he seems to play only one character. And that character is Kevin Costner. If the role fits his persona, e.g. Eliot Ness in the Untouchables, he's not bad Otherwise he's colorless. To paraphrase Dorothy Parker: He runs the gamut of emotions from A to B. Feel free to disagree, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Marshal Max Henry Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 they are just different movies. Wyatt Earp was about the Earp Family. Toombstone was about Toombstone. Both great Movies imho
The Original Bad Bob Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Costner is a celebrity, not an actor. Tombstone is twice as entertaining. Kurt Russell is a hoot; he may not be the best actor in the world, but he's got intensity. It was val Kilmer's last good movie before he threw in the towel and retired to New Mexico.
DocWard Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 To be honest, I've never been able to watch Wyatt Earp all the way through. It drags for me, and that isn't good in a movie that is over three hours long anyway. It seems to me that Wyatt Earp was intended to be a grand epic, while Tombstone was intended to be an honest to goodness guy's movie. I think Tombstone succeeded. I'll leave judgment on Wyatt Earp to others. One thing for me though, I know plenty of guys that can quote darn near all of Tombstone. Seems I never hear a quote from Wyatt Earp, except for one specific vulgarity from Doc Holliday. Oh, I'm right there with you regarding Dana Delany.
Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 It seems to me that Wyatt Earp was intended to be a grand epic, while Tombstone was intended to be an honest to goodness guy's movie. Howdy You are pretty close to the truth. Costner's version was originally meant to be a mini series for TV. So it runs longer than most theatrical release movies,
Cope Daniels Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I like both of the movies. I watch Tombstone more than I do Wyatt Earp because there is more action in the movie and it is not as long.
Ricochet Roy, SASS #71853 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I recently watched a documentary on Wyatt Earp including interviews of well known historians. All I can say is if the Documentary is true Hollywood sure has a wild imagination. Roy
Iron Pony Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Like Tombstone better, one reason is more lines to quote from it compared to Wyatt Earp. Another is Tombstone doesnt have everyone wearing buscadero rigs. Funny thing about Tombstone, Kurt Russel is the only one who loks like he's wearing a fake mustache compared to the rest of the men in the cast. And as good as Kilmer was I wonder what Quaid would have done in that movie versus Costner's.
DocWard Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I recently watched a documentary on Wyatt Earp including interviews of well known historians. All I can say is if the Documentary is true Hollywood sure has a wild imagination. Roy No question about it. Much of what is accepted about the people and occurences seems to be factually inaccurate. Tombstone is entertainment, and the characters, time and place are fairly accurate, but that is about it.
The Original Bad Bob Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I recently watched a documentary on Wyatt Earp including interviews of well known historians. All I can say is if the Documentary is true Hollywood sure has a wild imagination. Roy That is true. Most of it is exaggerated and they change the events to make it more dramatic.
Deja Vous Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I have watched both in the last couple of days and it got me to thinking which i like better. I liked both movies, but JMHO Tombstone was the best one. Can I take them home now? lol.. Okay fine just kidding.. I liked the ending better too on Tombstone... just my kinda movie I guess.
Poppy Posted February 2, 2011 Author Posted February 2, 2011 These movies came out in 93 and 94 I believe, so how great would it be to have this discussion about other westerns....especially when both are so good. hoping True Grit sparks a rash of GOOD westerns and not ones trying to re-invent the wheel
Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I couldn't pick a favorite 'twixt the two as I like them both. To me, anything after seeing Braveheart is "just a movie". But I did like Randy Quaid's version of Doc better than Kilmer's. Kilmer made Doc slick, Quaid made him sleazy. I'm bettin' that Quaid was closer to the real Doc.
The Original Bad Bob Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 It's funny how the western used to be the most popular genre in movies. There were series of movies, western TV series, and don't forget the novels, Louis Lamore being the best known, but there were others. All the biggest stars in Hollywood were in those movies. Times have changed.

From what I have read about him you are right.
Bart Solo Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I too prefer Tomestone, but I must say that Wyatt Earp is only important to the history of the west because he worked in Hollywood. Otherwise, he was just another frontier barkeeper/lawman. There were at least a dozen lawmen in the Indian Territory who had more interesting stories. The Texas Rangers was filled with genuine characters. Oh, Bat Masterson tried to burnish Earp's reputation, but at the time he was trying to make a living as a writer. Masterson is actually a more interesting character than Earp.
Ken K Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Well... I have watched both many times. Actually Tombstone was on TV last night. watched it with all the commercials even though I have the DVD??? Don't know why I did that ??? TOMBSTONE wins my vote however. But I did like some of the Wyatt Earp movie parts, but not all. I liked all of Tombstone!!! A lot of lines to Quote from that one!!! Mater of fact I purchased both DVD's. I watched one right after the other. Val ...I'm your "Huckleberry"!!! And I gotta learn them Latin quotes. Because of Tombstone I am going with the Doc Holliday LOOK. Working on the clothes, got the Hat, guns & dagger!!! I will just have to change my ALIAS to something with a Doc & a K in it!!! Started with Ken K for lack of a better one so I could sign up! Never quite found what I was looking for yet. Doc Kay
Grizzly Dave Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Like them both. Agree with whoever said Dana Delany, she was simply breathtaking in that role.
T. H. O' Sullivan Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I'm probably in the minority, but I always thought the ultimate Wyatt Earp movie has not yet been made. Both Tombstone and Wyatt Earp have great moments and I enjoy both films, but a real film study of the Earps would be more complicated. Less of a shoot-em-up, good guy versus bad guy film and more of a study of the legal-political situation in Cochise County, and the aftermath. Keep in mind that the Earps were businessmen in Tombstone, some working behind the scenes for the authorities. I had the opportunity to watch some of the filming of Wyatt Earp for the scenes shot in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Ignoring the Stacy Keach abomination titled "Doc", I also think a historically accurate film of John Henry Holliday would be a neat project. He was probably the most interesting and complex character in the entire Earp saga. T.H. O'Sullivan Black Mesa Ranch New Mexico
crooked jake,4371 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Tombstone is my pick ......some Cas shooters in it as extras..................liked the casting cept fer Bill Paxton Thought the clothes and hats were a lot more authentic. Yeah Miss Delany is .......well yeah........
crooked jake,4371 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 but I did really like the scene in Earp ,where he hits the guy with the pool ball.....adapt ,improvise and overcome
GunClick Rick Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 James Garner ,Jason Robards numero uno! Jason Robards as DOC--"where in the hell do you get that stuff, mmmff!" http://www.movieposter.com/poster/b70-3488/Hour_Of_The_Gun.html
DocWard Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I couldn't pick a favorite 'twixt the two as I like them both. To me, anything after seeing Braveheart is "just a movie". But I did like Randy Quaid's version of Doc better than Kilmer's. Kilmer made Doc slick, Quaid made him sleazy. I'm bettin' that Quaid was closer to the real Doc. Per Wikipedia (so subject to further confirmation): Virgil Earp, interviewed May 30, 1882, in The Arizona Daily Star (two months after Virgil had left Tombstone after Morgan Earp's death), summed up Holliday: There was something very peculiar about Doc. He was gentlemanly, a good dentist, a friendly man and yet, outside of us boys, I don't think he had a friend in the Territory. Tales were told that he had murdered men in different parts of the country; that he had robbed and committed all manner of crimes, and yet, when persons were asked how they knew it, they could only admit it was hearsay, and that nothing of the kind could really be traced to Doc's account. He was a slender, sickly fellow, but whenever a stage was robbed or a row started, and help was needed, Doc was one of the first to saddle his horse and report for duty.
Push the button Wyatt Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 me,i like em both. I guess i'm one of the few people who like Costner.oh well, i don't have a lot of friends either. But i get along.
Sage Creek Gus SASS #64320 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Gotta agree on Dana Delaney - she was hot! I loved her line after seeing Wyatt, Doc etc on the street. "I want one"! As for the movies. Tombstone is still my favorite although I like a lot of the Wyatt Earp movie. I usually skip the first part and start watching where Doc first shows up. I thought Val Kilmer did a good job as Doc but gotta say from what I've read about Holiday Quaid was more on the money as to his true character. SCG
Kid Shane, SASS #40660 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Tombstone is my pick ......some Cas shooters in it as extras..................liked the casting cept fer Bill Paxton Thought the clothes and hats were a lot more authentic. Yeah Miss Delany is .......well yeah........ Actually if you look at old photos of the Earps from the time they were in Tombstone, the Tombstone clothes were not period correct. They were too fancy.
Wylie Harp, #21158L Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Tombstone was much better, but I think Wyatt Earp did a better job telling the overall story. Tombstone was a movie about the period of time in Wyatt Earp’s life when he was in Tombstone, AT Wyatt Earp was more of a biography about Wyatt Earp. The characters in Tombstone where much more interesting and entertaining. "When the legend becomes fact, film the version the sells the most movie tickets"....Bob Boze Bell ~:Wylie:~
Boondock Saint, #70146 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I like them both. If I had to pick one, Tombstone would get the nod. I'm not a Kostner fan, but I believe that he more accurately portrayed what Wyatt was really like. I liked Kilmer's portrayal of Doc, but, like others, I think that Quaid was probably more accurate. A lot of the dialog from Tombstone is accurate. Some of the quotes are taken from newspaper and court documents. I agree that Dana Delaney is easy on the eyes, but I would have to give the nod to Joanna Going. Boondock
SGT. QUINCANNON, SASS #32999 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Overall, Tombstone gets the nod. But I like Wyatt Earp, as well. In both films Doc Holliday stole the film. I liked the Virgil and Morgan better in Wyatt Earp, and also thought Joanna Goings was better AND sexier as Josephine than Dana Delany, who was way too brassy for my liking.
