Looks like Hollywood is already lining up behind some movie concerning Britons pre WW2 royalty?? Im really glad I do not have good taste, it sounds so boring!

I thought The Kings Speech an excellent movie. I enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed True Grit, which is A LOT!

Howdy

I have seen both True Grit and The King's Speech. I went back to see the King's Speech a second time. It brought tears to my eyes both times. With all due respect, the true story of King George VI struggling to overcome his speech defect in order to rally his country at their time of greatest need is much more than just some movie concerning British royalty.

I agree! I've been telling folks that in the John Wayne True Grit, Rooster Cogburn is the main character, whereas, in the latest True Grit, as in the book, Mattie Ross is the main character.

Agreed. Her's was the central character. Steinfeld carried the movie on her back. She should have been nominated for Best Actress. The academy is fickled.

Quite the lineup this year, there are some great movies nominated. If you haven't seen Winter's Bone you are really missing a troubling, but amazing look at Americana. Great performances all around for sure, but, The Fighter is going to rake in a bunch of them. Christian Bale delivers the performance in the best part of his career and that's saying something.

King's Speech is one of the most memorable in a long, long time. I was surprised how much I enjoyed Social Network, partly because Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal is brilliant. Tough year for a western, even a great one, which I believe True Grit was once again.

I sure hope the Dude and the Duke ride together on this one- that would be a story for all time.

B) Hello the Fire,

Finally saw True Grit. Personally thought it was of the best movies I'd seen in a long time.

I can't remember a remake of a classic movie that got nominated for best picture let alone 9 other Oscar categorizes.(yes I know some silent films did)

To go out and remake any movie, ESPECIALLY a Duke Classic and have it nominated for Best Picture, and Best Actor(after John Wayne won his only Oscar in the original) you have got to take your hat off to the Cohen Bros.(boy it's along way from Raising Arizona)

I totally agree that Hailee Steinfeld should have been nominated in the Best Actress Category. All in all 10 nominations for a genre of movie that Hollywood just doesn't like to do anymore.

Good luck to True Grit at Oscars.

Glad to see it get a lot of nominations. Maybe that will spur the studios into producing more westerns. I thought Jeff Bridges made a great Rooster Cogburn. Nothing against John Wayne and his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn, but in my opinion, Jeff Bridges was outstanding.

Am I the only one who didn't like Bridges in True Grit? I found his speech difficult to understand. I found the movie slow moving. Most scenes were too dark to see clearly. Nothing about any of the characters really grabbed me. If it was true to the book, I might have dozed off or simply laid it down without finishing it.

I guess I just prefer the old fashioned westerns more.

The only movie I have been more disappointed in lately was The Green Hornet.

Must be Jack, I loved Jeff in the role of Cogburn. I thought him to be much more belivable then John Wayne in the movie.

I gotta agree with those who think Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn was excellent. I also think John Wayne was as good. I think Bridges being hard to understand was done on purpose as that was part of his character. Even though you couldn't always understand every word he said you still understood his thoughts.

As for Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross. Her performance was stellar!

I read an article about her nomination for Best Supporting Actress. As I understand it those who can vote can write in any name for any award. In the past actresses of her age have had better luck of winning for the Supporting Actress Award rather than Best Actress. So the production company was pushing her name for Supporting Actress rather than Best Actress. What they were afraid of is that some would vote for her for Best Actress and others for Best Supporting Actress and her votes would be split and she wouldn't receive enough for either category.

I've only seen the movie once but one thing I found so impressive about her performance was her ability to show her emotions just in her facial expressions. Her Mattie Ross character was so determined to avenge her father's death that she was willing to carry on no matter what she encountered. But if you watch Hailee's face at times when something really bad happens she shows just an instant of fear or doubt in her face before you can see her regain her resolve to carry on.
