Howdy All, With talk about how fast some folks shoot. Just curious what some of you think the average stage time is at your local monthly match. Would it be 30-40 sec. ;)

Difficult question to answer. Stage times vary by club a lot based on typical target distances, target sizes, complexity of stages, how many multiple hit targets (i.e. how many double and triple taps due to limited number of targets per stage), etc. Club results will vary a lot by the attendance. Several shoots in Az typically have several shooters shooting monthly matches that are category winners or overall match winners at state championships and above. A few clubs have a lot of really laid back shooters that don't care at all about their times. Also exactly what is average, is it the middle shooter or the average of times. The average of times will be swayed a lot of if you count the very slowest shooters and SDQs. For a specific club, go to their web site and look at recent match results.

Where I've shot I've kind of figured out the following, I could be way off base, but I think it's close....

The fast guys average around 20 serconds

Average about 30 - 40 seconds

Slower folks like me 40+ seconds

Not that any of that matters much anyway, if yer havin fun. And if yer out to improve, you're really competing with yourself most of all.

That's the view from my snowed in cabin.

Thanks Marauder, i like those score sheets. I will see if our club can do that with our's?

here is a nother thing to ponder

take the shoots average stage time

add all your miss 5 seconds together

did you shoot an extra stage (did your misses equal a total stage time)

a lot of folks do

just another way to ponder misses ;) and stage times

Something to remember.

The fast shooters don't get to handle their guns much during a match.

The slower shooters get to play more with their hardware during a match.

It's relative to any given match.

What do you want to accomplish?

Was running the 100yd one time, could of finished in the top 3 but i decided to run slow and savor the race as long as possible. Bullcrap! Nobody runs slow just cause, they run according to thier ability. I know a lot of people who make excuses, oh well they can try to lie to themselves.

I try to shoot as fast as I can without giving up accuracy. I am usually glad if my time in seconds is lower than my age in years. I just started shooting in seniors category this summer! ;)

With this line of reasoning(not that there's anything wrong with it) you could have a couple gun malfunctions and get a couple of re-shoots at your locals so you can have more shooting time. Bye the bye on any given stage we all shoot the same number of shots unless you are a particularly poor shotgunner lol

I shoot With Santa Fe River Stan at my club Sooooooo. He sets the average prety Darn High

+1

They both still do the 100 yards. One just does it faster. But it is still the same distance.

And still the same amount of shots fired.

Besides. The fast shooter???? More than likly handles and practices MORE than the slow one. That is why he is fast.

SO. Who is really getting more time with there guns???

As for average times.

As other have said. Depends.

But just guessing around here. 30-35

Ours will average in the high 30s. That's with 70 second shooters and 17 second shooters.

I'v shot at three clubs mainly over the years and the fast shooters will usually shoot between 22 and 28 sec. with maybe one miss, that's maybe the first 5 to 8 shooters, the bottom 5 to 8 will shoot in the low 50's, the the others in the middle.

I'v shoot with a couple of world champions I always say take his score double it and add 10 sec. and that's my score.

I shoot as fast as I can and have a clean stage, usually get 4 out of 6 clean and sometimes 5 out of 6. A few times a year a clean match.

Mine average 72.37

Saturday shoot, 25 shooters, six stages, average stage time 37.5.

First place averaged 20 and last place averaged 60.

With a spread like that, the average doesn't seem to have a whole lot of meaning.

Cheers,

BJT is exactly right (he usually is).

I just looked at our last Saturday shoot.

Six stages -

fastest shooter 22, 19, 19, 23, 22, 19

slowest shooter 97, 70, 83, 81, 98, 67

I don't think averaging the two times tells you anything.

And as others have pointed out - stage setup, movements, target size, shape and distance all factor into stage times. All matches are not created equal and all match attendees are not equal.

Averaging times at a single match tells you little - comparing averages match to match tells you nothing.

Obviously you've never seen me shoot. Sometimes I stop, turn to another cowboy, make a few comments, shoot the next gun, saunter to the next position, shoot, etc. I really don't care about my score; shucks they could not even time me and that would be fine with me. I had enuff competition stuff when I wuz working; now, I'm 10 years old again, playing cowboy, and Mom's not calling me in fer dinner!

Thanks All, sounds like Mid-30's is a average time for most clubs? It sounds like stage times are about the same all over! Fast guys in the teens, good shooters 20-30 sec. average shooters 30-40, and newer shooters 40-60. The best thing is were all here having fun!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope to shoot some out of state shoots this year? Lady Cheyenne and I have not shot at a big match yet!

Red Rider Rudy Still new and learning!!!!!!!!!!!
