Lady,

Ya hit the nail on the head. When mama is around she runs back and forth, but she is purdy much Daddy's little baby girl.

Auntie Allie,

It's a fixer upper, built in the 1860s. It's been well mantained and has just the right kind of ENJOYABLE work that needs done. We are painting and restoring back to original 1860~1880 glory, period colors and the like. We have enjoyed it so far and hope to see our goals of rehabing the place done by spring.

Little Alli says "Howdy, Auntie Allie!"

Hey EE, that is wonderful.

Sorta like a little bit of Christmas all over. Thanks for sharing.

Looks like you got a very nice nice family. Enjoy those youngsters

as long as you can. They are so special and they grow up so dang fast.

Little Alli looks to be a heartbreaker in about fifteen years.

Merry Christmas to you and your family, even if it is a little late.

It still has the Spirit. Hope 2011 is good to all of you.

Thank you BMC, and back at 'cha. We think about Christmas all year.

Gotta love the kiddos while they are young(and still home.) I 'spect one day it'll be hard to let go. :(

Allie, Did I mention the size of the place? you'd love it.

Just to give an idea........ 4 fireplaces, 3 staircases indoors, 2 basement stairscases, outdoor staircase, living room, parlor, dining room, kitchen w/breakfast bar

office, 4 bedrooms, leather shop, music studio, 2 baths..............

I've got some more pics. to give you the scope of the size. We love this old house!!

Little Alli is the master of the domain, runnin' all through the place. That's another skill she has aquired since I've been off the Wire. She went from crawl to run with no walk in between. ;)

We got another big snow storm ridin' up on us. gotta get in to the arctic gear. :P:) Or maybe I'll just sip some hot coffee and warm my feet by the fire in this here Saloon.

We are on the edge of the historic district in downtown Hannibal, Missouri. The only problem with a find like this is that in most cases the neighborhoods are not the best. Old buildings mean old neighborhoods which we all know can sometimes be rough. In our case we are in the historic district and our home is listed on the local historic registry. It is a rare find in which the area is well kept and for the most part well traveled by folks passing through to see the sights.

We are surrounded by historical homes and businesses and very pleased with the find. Keep in mind that when looking for a home of this nature that there is and always will be serious upkeep and maintainance issues. These old homes are getting very hard to find. We have looked for one in the country with no luck. most country homes like this are either torn down and gone or fixed up into B&Bs and worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I do know there are a few up for sale in Hannibal, some in good areas (and the price reflects it) and some in worse areas. It really depends on what you are looking for and what you want to spend. For us, this was the find of a lifetime. Great price and great location.

Good luck with the search and I hope this information is of help.

It's worth your while to check out the Hannibal Missouri area. The economy is pretty good (given the state of the current national economy) and the homes such as this one are some what plentiful.

Thank ya for the compliment Forty Rod.

I didn't think we would use all of the room in the place, but surprizingly we have made use of every inch.

Before this place we lived ina good sized apartment, but I'd say the biggest place I've ever lived with my wife and kids was a double wide trailer.

My dad asked how we'd pay for it until I told him how much............ needless to say, ya could have knocked him over with a feather.

We've gotten a great deal on the house. I don't know why.........maybe it's haunted............... I dunno ;)

Deja, let's see some Christmas pics. from y'all and everyone else here. Just cause the holidays are past don't mean we can't be proud of our holidays families.

Slick, Thank ya, Pard. The best to you and your for the New Year.

Forty, As for the house being haunted...........

There's no clear records to just when, but the house was constructed by one Mr. Crookshank in 1860. He was a lumber baron (as he is called) in the area. There are many decorative pieces in the house such as the window grabs decorated with old Free Masons type emblems. It is said that the house next door was built by him for his daughterand her new husband, of which blossumed into the next generation of the family. Both homes were laid out to accomidate large gatherings and formal events and made access easy of guest and servants alike. Servants, not slaves, were hired to tend the families needs and see that the children were taken care of while Mr. Crookshank conducted business about the town.

It is said the Mr. Crookshank was a very wealthy man of the times with a deep love for family and friends. He was the founder of the Crookshank Lumber which was the sole supplier for the area lumber. The company floated logs down the Mississippi to Hannibal lumber mills located close to the river front and famous Hannibal train yards. He was also a big part of bringing the Hannibal brickplant to the forefront of building projects in the area. He was part of every major building project of the day including delivery of building materials to construction of Rockcliff Mansion (which isn't much bigger than this house). The brickplant and Crookshank lumber have been lost to the history of the area.

Much of old Hannibal is gone; burned or torn down and lost to history. Hannibal is full of modern businesses and people pass right by the historical sights without a wink, but some of us have an interest in saving the ghosts of the past............

Yup, I think it is great to think that Mr. Crookshank may still roam the house, watching over things while we are out. The ghosts of our history are all around us and with good reason...............so we don't forget them or their legacy.

I'm busy doing research into in depth history of this family and the surrounding area. I will be sure to post any interesting findings I may have.
