Blue Steel Traveller Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Any of y'all see the news today about a guy in Miami carrying primers in his suitcase? Apparently they went off when the baggage handler flung the suitcase. I find it hard to believe unless there was also something in the suitcase next to the primers that would hit one and set them off. Traveller

HAHA Since I travel to a number of places where one can buy primers I have given this some thought. Especially when they were in short supply. Guess I need to re-think that idea. Dang thumb - can't type worth a dang now.
Okie Sawbones, SASS #77381 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Primers can go by air -- but only on cargo planes, not passenger planes. I don't see how primers could go off in the original packaging, so the guy must have done something more stupid than taking them on a passenger plane. Tuesday, December 28th, 2010 at 11:30 pm UTC Authorities in Miami have arrested an airline passenger after bullet parts in his luggage caused a small explosion. FBI spokesman Mike Leverock said Tuesday there was no connection to terrorism. The explosion did not cause any injuries or damage. Leverock said the arrested man had packed hundreds of bullet primers in his suitcase. Some of these primers ignited as the bag was being unloaded from the airplane. Leverock said the man, a naturalized U.S. citizen whose name has not been released, arrived at Miami International Airport on his way to Jamaica. He said the man has been charged with transportation of hazardous materials. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
Adirondack Jack, SASS #53440 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Components are heavily regulated in Jamaica (contraband unless yer a licensed ammo reloader, a next to impossible license), so my thinking is he probably packed em loose, out of their original packaging, perhaps in a big ole vitamin bottle or some such, which is a definite hazard when the bag is thrown....
Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Howdy Ever notice how Federal packages their primers much differently than Winchester or Remington? I dunno the particulars, but the way I heard it, Federal had a problem one time with primers going off in a delivery truck. So they redesigned the packaging to make them less likely to go off if subjected to shock. Federal primers are isolated from shocks much better by their packaging than the other brands I have used. I ain't read all the particulars on this case, but stranger things have been known to happen.
