G. P. Cobb
Haven't seem much lately. What are ya carrying in specifically .380 for back up guns? And why the preference. Gun Tests say the CZ rates very high for 2010 testing.
Barterin Bill
I used to carry a Walther PPKS, but went to 9MM and now carry a Ket-Tec P-11. More knockdown, just about the same size (just a little thicker because of the double stack) and 11 rounds instead of 7. If I were to carry a .380 again, it would be the Walther. Really well made and reliable.
LawMan Mark, SASS #57095L
As a second, or third gun, I carry the Ruger LCP, with Speer 90 grain GDHP ammo. I wouldn't have a problem with the Kel-Tec 3AT either, and have a Kel-Tec .32 I carry fairly regularly. I've been looking at the Sig 238, but haven't been able to justify the nearly $600 price tag. If it cost a mite less, I'd have one already...maybe two. I did just take advantage of a sale and factory rebate from S&W to pick up a 642 airweight for $299 plus tax, after mail in rebate. I suspect it will see a bit of front pocket/ankle time, after I smooth it a mite and put a set of Wolff springs in it's innards.
Blue Steel Duke
A Ruger LCP is usually in my front pocket or in a IWB holster, then I have a Kahr PM-9, but I'm in the process of adding a Glock 26 to my collection. I handled the new S&W Bodyguard in .380 and .38, wasn't really impressed with either one. The activation of the laser on the .380 was cumbersome and the ambidextrous cyliner release on the .38 felt strange, so it's the old model 36 for this old lawdawg. Tascosa, SASS# 24838
I used to carry a 380 off duty until the night I was almost witness to a hold up in a grocery store. I think the store was too crowded and the 4 guys just walked out. THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I CARRIED A .380. From that time on I ALWAYS carry my Colt Commander, .45 ACP!!! Ask yourself, "If I'm sure I am going to be involved in a shooting situation, do I really want the .380??" Just my personal opinion mind you....... I think someone was asked why he carried a .45 (Col. Beckwith?) and he responded with, " Cause they don't make a .46!" Think hard gents, we all carry for protection. Is a .380 enough protection if involved in a shoot out? Tascosa

Tascosa I agree with all of that. As I mentioned in my post, the .380 is the second or third gun. My primary is no less than a .45 ACP semi-auto or a .357 magnum revolver. But, having had a primary gun have a mechanical failure during a firearms competition match recently, knowing a .380 is there just in case is priceless. Tascosa ________________ Oh yea, 1911 is the King or A Sherriff revolver in 3.5". No I was askin about the second or third backup gun. Seems like the .380 is the choices for a lot of the fairer sex and wondered about the CZ. Again the second, third or fourth gun. And in the home, the shotgun rules our bedroom. Lazarus Longshot, SASS #44254 Life
My primary carry is a Colt Pocket 9 (double action 9mm) or S&W 360S (.357 Mag Scandium 3" barrel J-frame), secondary is Colt Mustang .380. Bedroom/Car guns are SIG 229 in .357 SIG (with Crimson Trace Lasergrips) or Colt model 70 1911 stainless in .45ACP, also with Crimson Trace Lasergrips. There's also a 12 gauge under the bed. I used to carry a Colt Officer's as a back-up while on duty. It rode in a soft rough-out RH leather pouch, clipped to the inside straps of my vest so I could draw it crossdraw if needed. They say that a .380 in the pocket is better than a .45 at home in your sock drawer, but having actually needed a pistol off-duty on a couple of occaisions, I'll dress the part and carry the .45... regardless of the weather. Pack Saddle Slim, SASS #73122
A .380 Ruger LCP is always close at hand. Of couse, I love the .45, but I've found my SP101 in .357 is easier to conceal.
News Shooter, SASS #31545
I'm in MA so we are drastically limited in being to buy many handguns, especially the small ones. However the Sig238 just got approved last week and my store sold 14 of them in three days. including one to me. Again, we poor folks in this truly socialist state don't have much to compare to, but I love this little gun.

Blue Steel Duke
Back to the original question of a back up gun. On duty, my son carries his baby Glock on an ankle holster, and his Ruger LCP in a specially sewn pocket in his vest. Off duty it's usually his LCP, with his Glock within easy reach inside his patrol car, and let's not forget the 870 and AR in his trunk I do appreciate the re-thinking of carrying a tiny 5 shot to the grocery store. The places we used to carry the lightest (grocery, gas station, etc) now days have the highest robbery rates. I am curious though, those that carry the 1911, do you carry extra magazines and how many? BSD
Noah Cash
one of two, either a Kimber Ultra carry with CT grips, along with 2 back up mags, or a CZ 9 MM with a single back up mag.

Henry T Harrison
In almost 40 years as a law enforcement officer my off duty and back up guns ranged from a NAA 22 mag to a Colt Gold Cup. No matter how many I tried I still go back to the original, my square butt Chiefs Special that I paid the princely sum of $83 dollars for new. My second favorite is a 70 year old Browning Baby in .25 ACP. My favorite 380 was and is a Colt Mustang I carried one for years as a back up and sometimes primary gun HTH

If I'm carrying my little gun,(S&W 325 in 45 ACP) I have at least two reloads. We've always taught our Officers to carry at least one spare magazine/reload off-duty. Remember - you never know what you're up against untill it's nearly too late, and Murphy being Murphy, it's good to try to eliminate as many of the variables as possible. You are on your own until the Bluesuits get there, so be prepared. WWB
