Brother King, SASS #69031 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 do you have to wait for them to move like quail (fly) or can you just shoot 'em wherever you find them?
Guest Paniolo Cowboy SASS #75875 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Nope, I just ain't gonna ask I was thinking the same thing .... WHAT KIND OF CANS? No reply needed!
Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Howdy The first match I ever attended has no categories and no awards. They continue that practice right up to today. The only thing they give an award for is a clean match, which gets you into the next match for free. I have been attending that match almost every month since 2001. It is one of my favorite matches. Lots of good friends, lots of fun. Those who want to shoot fast shoot fast. Them that don't has a good time anyway. Who needs categories or awards?

Tell Sackett SASS 18436 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Well, I need categories & awards if I'm gonna pay that much or more to shoot. A match without them is called a MONTHLY match, or PRACTICE!

That's great Wolf, we've been doin a "no categories" shoot at Firelands Peacemakers on the first Wed. of the month and the 5th Sunday fer about 6 years now, lots of fun. Some shooters say it's they're favorite shoot! Rye
Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Oh Oh! Dear WWW, I wish I lived closer; I'd be there. BTW, Wicked Sister looks marvelous as a red head! Regards, Allie Mo PS I didn't get the "cans" thingy. So I googled Shooting Cans Joke. Is that what you were thinking about that Rattler probably wasn't shooting?
Leadslinger Shep, SASS#60821 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 My thoughts-the Firelands Peacemakers have a "first wednesday of the month" match which is no catagories & no prizes. Shoot any catagory you want, even 6 different catagries! Try-out & shoot different guns. Rye Miiles tries to put in some fast stages, some fun stages, some to think about, etc. Usually well attended...40-50 shooters is common. Great fun. Theme is always safety first, but "fun" is the major component. Isn't "fun" what CAS all about? I try to never miss this event. Shep
twelve mile REB Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 The awards are the buffet table and the catagory is very happily full. Treat yourself come a long for the ride, Wolf and the crew are the best. 12
Wolf Wind-Walker #36748 Posted December 2, 2010 Author Posted December 2, 2010 Dear Allie......... Sacremento is close enough..........(we have kids in Vacaville).................so come on over..........we would love to have you.......I will save you a dance Haven't seen Sisters red hair yet........... J T keeps coming around, but we won't see Nancy til after Christmas....? Be well my dear.............Wolf Reb....thanks for the compliment.........see you and Pat in about 28 days.......... And the menu for the New Years dinner folks is.......... Fruit or-de-erves.......roasted Chicken covered in a yummy celery/carrot sauce.....Boneless Ribs........mashed taters.....mixed veggies.....cornbread and three kinds of pie........ Maybe even throw in a Barber Shop Quartet and a little dancing............surrounded by 2 days of shooting = 12 stages and a "Poker Shoot" ....plus the now Famous "Couples Shoot" from this past Senior games..........it was a huge hit.......and maybe - just maybe a little Shotgun Challenge......... All at the Fastest Growing PREMIERE Shooting Range in Utah......... So how ya gonna "Ring" in your New Year Sparkey......???? Regards............Wolf

Wolf Wind-Walker #36748 Posted December 2, 2010 Author Posted December 2, 2010 Rye................ Sounds like you guys got a good thing going there.................good to do some creative stuff and just have fun.................keep up the good work............ And I believe it is good to share some of the "non-standard" stuff our clubs do on the wire...................helps spread the "ideas" around and puts more variety out there for other folks/clubs to enjoy.............. Regards........Wolf
Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Dear Birthday Brother Wolf, I would love to shoot there some day. Next time you visit your children, it would be cool if you would shoot with us. and Merry Christmas to you and Jewel! Allie Mo PS I don't think we convinced Sister she needed to be a red head on occasion. She looked great though!
Colorado Coffinmaker Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 We do something similar at one of the clubs I shoot at. First match of the season is a "free for all" with no categories and you can make up any and all misses with the shotgun. So long as we (everybody) doesn't run out of shotgun ammo, everybody goes home with a clean match!!! Fun!!! Coffinmaker
William Waddy Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 We may not have categories or awards, BUT WE DO KEEP SCORE, and we post those scores before most shooters make it home. Most shooter's know who they are competing against, so this match IS NOT WITHOUT COMPETITION!!! We just don't put the competition at the top of the list. As for price - it includes a nice dinner, so that makes the cost about as cheap or cheaper than going to 2 x 6 stage monthly matches. We also have the dinner after the first day of shooting, so folks can scoot home right after shooting the second day - no need to wait around for an awards banquet. We have two other matches during the year, Ruckus at Red Rock in April, and the Huntsman Senior Games in October. These matches do have categories and awards. We just get tired of jumping through all the hoops 3 times a year and so we make our holiday shoot fun, but with a whole lot less hassle for those in charge.
Driftwood Johnson, SASS #38283 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Well, I need categories & awards if I'm gonna pay that much or more to shoot. A match without them is called a MONTHLY match, or PRACTICE! This is a monthly match. They do it every single match. It is not very expensive, I think only $10 or $15 to shoot. That goes to the expense to the club of putting on the match and making a little bit of money for the club. Nobody objects. And it is a great place for beginning shooters, as there is very little pressure. If you need categories and awards in order to enjoy a match, well, so be it. To me, the fun is dressing up cowboy, strapping on sixguns, and having a great day shooting and having fun with friends. I don't need categories or awards to add to that. We do keep score, and there are plenty of competitors who show up, there just are not any awards or categories. Except for the clean match, and I did win that a couple of months ago. As far as shooting cans in the desert is concerned, well, there are not any deserts around here. I have just as much fun as the next guy bouncing a can around at the berm with a 22 or a pistol, but I can do that any day I want, by myself. If I want to play cowboy, I have to go to a match.
McLintock, SASS #7658 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I've always thought that there should be an official category called "Shootin' for the fun of it" or something similar. You get timed, but shoot only for or against yourself, when the shootings done, list them by alphabetical order in the category. Shoot however you want, any legal weapons and pay regular match fees. Wonder how much the regular categories would shrink? JMHO.
Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 PS Hangtown Vigilance Committee in El Dorado, CA has no categories. They list "fun" in the category column of the scoring program. It took a while but we finally got them to sort the scores.
Wolf Wind-Walker #36748 Posted December 2, 2010 Author Posted December 2, 2010 Hey Allie Moe.......... Check out the other post I just put up............. Christmas Massacree shoot book on line......... Sure I can't temp you to coming over and joining us.......???? Jewel says Merry Christmas back at ya............regards...Wolf
