Why So Many Catagories

Marshal Max Henry

Just wondering what the reason for the evolution of so many catagories. It seems to me people should be able to shoot in any Cowboy era clothing and any style. Just like people did in the old west. Just curious

Of course you'll need to read the "Read This" as posted above noting that it is but one of many posts on the subject (of the dead horse we've been beating). It does go into some very valid points both for and against. Prior to SASS experience I have my time in the NSSA or skeet and there they didn't divide things up like they do here. There the divisions were made solely based on ability and that alone. If you were a great shot then that is who you shot against, great shots. Likewise if you were a poor shot then that is who you shot against, poor shots. Age didn't matter; Equipment didn't matter; Gender didn't matter; And dress didn't matter. I think that a little more of the skeet way of thinking would help us out a lot as opposed to trying to reorganize an already bloated amount of catagories into what will become still a bloated amount of catagories. Just my thoughts. Smithy.

You could delete all sex related categories, they are under utilized and have nothing to do with old west shooting. What? Not that brave?

Ok, you could get rid of all categories that involve how many hands on a gun and how many guns out of holster at the same time. What, the sport needs to have someone holding guns like they did in the movies and the old west?

Ok, you could erase of all age categories. What, the sport is 90% old pharts who need the protection and have the votes to keep it (NOTE this does not apply to Noz)?

Do you see the problem yet?

Or is it a problem? Could you state the down side of having the number of categories we do have? Matches still are plentiful even if demand has decreased. Getting rid of categories seems kinda like raising taxes when the economy is going down hill.

Cheers,

BJT

As you've noticed you've stumbled into a volatile subject.

Those in favor of lots of categories would say it encourages folks to play the game in their own way, by dress, guns, powder etc. Further they would say the age based allow them to compete only within their chosen category and age group.

That's all I will say so as to hopefully answer your question without beating the dead horse.

PLease excuse me. I did not mean to use up space over a subject that has been beatin into the ground. I am new to the sport and was truly curious. Thanks for not beating me up too bad for asking.

Ah heck, all the subjects here have been beated into the ground and then beaten again into a wide circle. No excuse needed. If you had not brought it up, some other wire folks would.

Cheers,

Henry,

Seeing your Badge # makes me realize that you probably don't know this, but you just stepped in a TRAP. You see besides Politics and Religion, there is a list somewhere that lists what no one should ever talk about on the Wire ...

the Saloon is different ... but the Wire is special.

I can't think of all of the subjects, but right off the top of my head the things on the list are:

Catagories in General

Need for more Catagories

Need to combine Catagories

Need to eleminate Categoies

Speed

Top Shooters

Gamers

Target Size

Target Location

Two Handed shooting verses One Handed

Small Calibers verses Big Calibers

Colt verses Ruger

The Gunfight at the OK Coral

Wyatt Earp

Doc Holliday

Wild Bill Hickok

Custer & The Little Big Horn

The Civil War (the whole things or just parts),

Whites verses Indians

The IPCS

The Need for Costumes

Costume Requirements

Dressing for Hot Weather

Reenactors

And there are many many more things which I just can't think of at the moment, and btw which I'm very guilty of mentioning now and then.

It's a hanging offense pard so beware! People are very very serious about these things!:blink:

IF you stay on the Wire for any length of time, you'll find out if it is a TABOO subject real easy ...

just don't forget to duck and cover!

My tongue and cheek suggestion is that Knitting, Bolo Ties, Movies, and Gunsmithing questions are usually safe bets when asking a question on here.

But then there's always some smart-aleck that'll have to get wise with you. My advice after a recent problem with one know-it-all is to ignore them and let 'em pound sand.

And whatever you do, don't ever think that the SASS WIRE represents SASS! It's a lot different at the range, it's a lot more like the Saloon where most folks go to have a good time.

So good luck and don't forget your fire proof shorts!

There's no need to ask to be excused Henry.

Pard there is no way that a new SASS member is going to know what was talked about recently ... nevertheless years before you ever joined SASS. It just ain't goin to happen. Trust me, I've been there real recent like.

And by the way, if you have a topic you want to start because you need answers then don't let a handful of folks try to intimidate you into not asking what's on your mind. This is for all members, not just a select few who have been on here since Al Gore first invented the Internet.

Cuz it would seem that 90% of shooters (give or take) want to win something, regardless of how meaningless it may be due to lack of competition.

You asked. I'm heading for my bomb shelter now. Catch ya later!

Welcome Mad Max.

Remember SASS is not the wire.

Your club is a good one. There are some real good pards there that can give you the rundown on of what's gone before and why.

Just because some of us remember when a message board was a tree with notes nailed to it dosen't mean you can't ask anything you want to. But you might want to try it out on yourself in the mirror before you push send. Come up and shoot with us some time.

Joe

I guess the advantage of shooting at a small club is, we just shoot one category - cowboy. You can shoot any style you like, but all scores are lumped into the same bowl and we only give one set of awards.

You do realize that 17th out of forty is more impressive than 2nd out of two?

I placed 10th in category at Winter Range last year and that means a lot more than

a first in a category all by myself would ever mean.

Did I say 17th Place, I meant 117th Place!

I made it up Creeker.

I lied! I never ever even heard of such a thing!

It was a joke pard! ;)
