Jack Houston # 35508 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 If so what camera do you use?? I'm looking at the small pocket size camcorders and all the info is confusing. Would like input from shooters who really use them for recording CAS.
Grizzly Dave Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Jack, my vids from Comin' at Cha 2010 were taken with my son's Flip UltraHD video camera that he got for opening a bank account, I think at First Bank. I'm hoping that one finds it's way into my Christmas sock so I don't have to borrow his to take vids at shoots. Hope that helps Grizz

Rowdy Rex, SASS #71002 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 If so what camera do you use??I'm looking at the small pocket size camcorders and all the info is confusing. Would like input from shooters who really use them for recording CAS. Jack, I shoot a lot of videos of SASS matches. i use an older (3yrs or so) Sony HD camera that uses tapes. i would recomend one with a hard drive. One tip I can share with you that has been a great help for me is that I use a monopod and mount the camera on top. This helps me keep the camera steady and I can hold it up high to shoot over the posse if needed. The monopod is expandable so i can up it in my cart with my long guns. This is a very handy tool. Here are some videos i took at the 2010 Oregon state match. Oregon State videos
G. P. Cobb Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 We prefer the Sony as well, ours uses the small DVD disk, records direct to disk. See those at Best Buy, we are happy with ours.
Pulp, SASS#28319 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I bought a JVC Everio last year. Can't remember the model number right now. Anyway, it does pretty good. Something filmed in HD or one step lower looks very good when played on a TV set. The software that comes with for downloading video or photos to a computer is very confusing for me. I finally got it all figgered out, but it was a chore. When it changes to a Windows Video format the quality drops quite a bit. Putting them on youtube causes another quality drop. Go to youtube, put blackpowderpulp in the search bar and you can see videos I've made with it. Reloads vs factory are the most recent, then some from EOT. Anything below EOT was filmed with a Sony Handicam or an HP pocket camera with video capability.
Jack Houston # 35508 Posted December 1, 2010 Author Posted December 1, 2010 Thanks for the opinions on the bigger cameras but I'm really only interested in the small ones.
Margarita Villain Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I use this one. Its a camera first, video second, but its purty darn good as a video too. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 You can see some videos here. http://www.youtube.com/user/TheMargaritaVillain?feature=mhum Pics here http://s681.photobucket.com/albums/vv177/J...stmatch%202009/ Best is the optical 10x zoom plus digital zoom in the viewer. I can take a pic of something 1/4 mile away, pull it up on the screen, and view about 4'x6' area. As for video, 30 frames per sec aint too bad for what I need. I have taped many of my own shoots over the last year. I can break it down to see what happened on a train wreck stage, or look for improvements. Even my avatar is a cropped still image from a video of me shooting from this camera.
LawMan Mark, SASS #57095L Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I did some reviews a few weeks ago and found this model Kodak to be pretty impressive Kodak Play Sport
Mean Matt McCord, SASS #24683 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Jack, one of the Canon Sure-Shot models should suffice. My oldest daughter and my step-daughter both have one, and they use them for video all the time. The trick (this is just my opinion) is to select a make and model that is relatively easy to use. If it takes a PHD in electrical engineering and constant use of the owner's manual to switch from picture to video mode and back again, what's the point?
Shady McLarry #62056L Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Jack i've been happy with my kodak Zi8, it takes all the way up to 1080I video, although the still pictures aren't very good(about Iphone quality). I did get to try several other models of video cameras before I settled on this one. You can get extra batteries for the kodak, and the memory cards are cheap now. I didn't like the cameras with only (on board memory) and built in batteries. It comes with it's own software for downloads, (adequate, but not capable of good editing) read some reviews on cnet. roundup 2010 roundup 2010
Cap'n Highpockets Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Jack, I've got a Samsung SL 202 w/ 10.2 megapix. Dead simple to use and does the job for me. Got mine at Best Buy this time last year. It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes. Cap'n Highpockets PS Still very happy w/the shotgun belt you made for me 5 or 6 years ago.
Chancy Shot, SASS #67163 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I am using a Canon Power Shot A570. Easy to use. It can take still or 40 Seconds of video with sound. The limited time of the video is not a problem most of the time. I have had it several years but there is probably a newer model Canon with similar features. Chancy
Rowdy Rex, SASS #71002 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Thanks for the opinions on the bigger cameras but I'm really only interested in the small ones. Jack, I might have given you the impression that I was using a big vhs camera. It looks like you are looking at the mini cameras but here is what I'm using. One of the features of my camera that I really like is the HDMI output that allows me to replay in true HD1080i. Sony Handycam HDR-HC3 1080i mini dv This link to CNET give pretty goog short reviews and may help in your search. Rowdy
Chief Rick Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I have a Canon Power Shot SD1200IS Digital ELPH. It's a 10.0 megapixel camera that also takes video. Data is stored on a micro SD card. It is agreat little point-and-shoot camera - I have carried it on my motorcycle, on a lanyard around my neck, in order to take quick pics of things while riding. I also use it to take short videos of shooters at CAS matches.
Smokey Shayne Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Jack, I use the Flip camera as well. Take a look at the vids on our website, cypresscreekcowboys.com. All those vids were done with the Flip camera
Captain Woodrow Cahill, SASS # 54363 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I got one of the Flip cameras last year for Christmas. That little thing is great. No complicated sets of buttons, sub-menus, or any of that other clutter that you usually find on electronic gizmos. Not to hijack, but on a related note, what video editing software does anybody suggest that doesn't require a degree from the UCLA Film School to use?
Yosemite Jim Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Jack, I use the Flip vidio camera as well and so does Texas Slim. If you look on you tube at slimsgang. All of those vidios were recorded with the flip vidio. You can also print out still photos from the vidios. Yosemite Jim
Guest Winchester Jack, SASS #70195 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I use a JVC Enviro and have been satisfied with it. I also have an Olympus that I got for pictures and it takes very good video but the file sizes are HUGE
Texas Jim Henry, SASS #20616 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Howdy, Jack - Yosemite Jim kind of beat me to it. I know Texas Slim took a lot of video of our posse at EoT using a Flip HD camera. I was both surprised and impressed at the quality of that video. I believe Walmart had the Flip HD cameras on sale on Black Friday for $99. As I recall, the zoom capability was somewhat limited, but what you get for the price impressed me enough that I plan on getting one. Regards, TJH
Cowboy Junky Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I use a sony cyber shot...it's real small and holds a TON of video or 500 tons of still shots.......lol. The HD is great on the computer or TV but it loses clarity when you post them on youtube. I'm real happy with it. http://www.bing.com/browse?g=digital_camer...bid=34&r=40 Sample video
Taquila Tab, Sass #25048 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Jack, I'll give another vote for the Flip. The videos I've shot recently were done with that. But, I have to say the video on my Iphone 4 is pretty darn good too. It's just not quite as easy to use as the Flip.
Jack Houston # 35508 Posted December 1, 2010 Author Posted December 1, 2010 Thanks everybody!! It's down to a Flip or one of the new Kodak's

Deuce Stevens SASS#55996 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Jack, I have the Flip Ultra. I am not techno wizard and it's very easy for me to use and to upload onto youtube and what not. My only complaint is that it only has 2x zoom. But seems to work great for CAS and other stuff. last week I was in Walmart and they had them on sale for $89.99. http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do...ch_constraint=0 . to see the quality of video all the videos on my youtube channel were taken with it. It takes AA which I also like.
Big Iron Patnode SASS 60632 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Jack. For a change of pace I used the safety glasses with a built in video/audio on the nose piece. Used it at CAC this year. Link to 3 videos on my Facebook. I think that is what T Bone picked up.
Gold Canyon Kid #43974 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 My son videos some of the shoots (a couple of stages and a few shooters only) he attends and makes selected posts on Utube. He uses a small camera that takes photos and videos. Learning how to make the Utube uploads was the hardest part. Not much of a camera is needed. It really gives you an idea of how good or bad the spotters are, when you view it when you get home.
Colt Faro, SASS #54579 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Iphone 4 shoots video and you can upload on the spot
Colt Faro, SASS #54579 Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Iphone 4 shoots video and you can upload on the spot Forgot to add... It also has a shot timer and you can create a profile for each shooter then email the times to anyone.
Marauder SASS #13056 Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Those memory sticks are amazing. I have a little older version of the Panasonic camera already mentioned. It is about the same cost of the flip phone and can do similar. The main advantage is that it has a much better zoom feature compared to the optical 2X zoom of the flip. The flip is very nice, especially with the faster frames and since you will normally be pretty close, that is still a good option.
