GOTOW got it wrong

I was just sitting down to read my latest edition of GOTOW, and on page 67 under the review of the Cimarron Holy Smoker, Mike Beliveau stated Paul Newman carried a Spencer, I remember it being a half magazine lever Winchester and I looked up the trailer and it's a Winchester, not a Spencer...

Right you are Wymore , but oddly enough , in the Elmore Leonard novel that the movie was made from , the character John Russell does carry a Spencer , a 56-56.

Yep, the movie we are talking about is Hombre, and Mike must have read the novel, which sadly I have not...

Yes, I read the novel...which is great BTW. I haven't seen the movie for many years, but, due to your post, I just ordered it so I can confirm the rifle (not that I doubt you...just a good excuse to get the movie )

One of my favorite movies and yes it was a winchester in the movie. I have the collection of Elmore Leonard short stories at home (was actually a short story rather than a novel) but haven't read that part yet. Will have to start it tonight.

There is a picture of this 1873 half-magazine bull barrel rifle in Peter Sharayko's book Tombstone - The Guns And Gear. The rifle in Hombre was also carried by one of the Buckaroos in Tombstone. It is a 44-40 made in 1890.
