Coyote Cap

I wanted to take a minute to clear up something that was recently posted on the wire. I purchased a Norinco ’97 from one of our fellow SASS members who was frustrated by the fact that the gun was locking up in a match. He blamed the problem on the gunsmith, Coyote Cap, and said he could no longer deal with him. Upon receipt of the ’97 I immediately sent it to Coyote as I have known him for a long time and knew his word and work were unquestionable. Coyote found the problem as soon as he opened the box. The factory spot welds on the slide stop ring (under the forearm), had let go and caused the slide to go too far forward, thus jamming the action. That is an Interstate Arms (Factory) Warranty repair problem and that problem had nothing to do with any workmanship or action job that Coyote did to that gun.

The problem happened a lot in the early Norinco M-97's. The gun is a second generation and they are now up to the ninth generation of major changes and upgrades. Coyote then rebuilt the magazine tube and upgraded the forearm and slide assemble to current (longer threading) specs and went through the whole gun and upgraded everything to get the most out of that gun that it can possibly be. He also installed some new parts to make the gun eject better. The gun has been set up to be run hard and fast. The extractors are upgraded as is the ejector and ejector stop block. What this means is that if you run the action too slowly, the extractors will try to hold the empty shell on the extractors. The purpose of this, is so that the empty hulls will fly out of the action at a high rate of speed and probably hurt somebody standing ten feet away to the right of the action. This is kind of a "Trademark" of Coyote’s as he likes to set up the extractors and ejection system to a high point of balance, where the spent hulls can land in a neat pile (or right into your cowboy hat, set out a few feet away). Cap does this because people try and reload so quickly, that they can easily over-run the extraction/ejection system if it is not set up to a high point of balance. A fast shooter can actually hit a spent shell that is on its way out of the action and disrupt his or her speed reload timing and throw off their concentration.

I am looking forward to shooting this in an upcoming match and I wanted everyone to know that Coyote Cap is a great guy and stands firmly behind his "NO BS" warranty.

Merry Christmas!

Having had this identical problem at EOT a couple of years ago, I can testify firsthand that it has nothing to do with any gunsmithing work. In my case, Lassiter diagnosed it by disassembling my 97 on the seat of my truck, and Texas Jack silver soldered it back in place during a dust storm. My Oregon pards loaned me a 97 to use during the match, and all came out well. RIP Chewie.

Coyote Cap has a reputation at least here on the wire as a good and honorable man, and I wouldn't want to dispute that. However, the person you purchased the shotgun from did have a problem, which Cap could have fixed and charged for or at least told him about. I had a similar problem, I sent a shotgun to Cap, a Winchester 97 made in 1903 that hadn't been used much about 95% on the bluing. I waited and paid for the complete action job because of course I wanted the best and Cap was the best. When I received my shotgun the action was alright, it just wouldn't go bang, the firing pin did not strike the primer hard enough to set it off. A call to Cap and basicly what he said was screw you, all my guns work all the time. On the bolt is inscribed "Coyote Cap Action #1484 4/07". There was no service offered and none received the gun has never fired a shot since it is my dry fire 97 and has performed wonderfully in that capacity. Just goes to show you everyone has bad days it just sucks when its on your dime.

Guess ya'll dont remember a few years back when the new load of 87's were on the way with a price increase that Cap said he would eat for the people that had money down on them.

Yep, ya know what happened, price was raised anyway. If ya didn't like it, just "cancel the order and the deposit will be happily refunded."

Wow you guys must have caught him on customer sevice day. I gave one of his SXS hammer guns at winter range to fix some stuff that was supposed to be done when you bought the gun and to get an action job. I was told he'd have it done by Sat. It wasn't but he would take it back and get it done in a few weeks. So 10 months later and still no gun. I have called 7 times and each time I was told it's on the priority shelf and would be done next week.

You must have caught him before the priority. Shelf got full.

And my experience is just the opposite. Mended my broken Stoeger overnight and charged a pittance. I cringe when good people stumble. Cap is a good person and a very good smith. He could work on any gun I own. I wish he were as good a businessman, I know it's because he can't say no.

Sure hope things work out for you pards.
