  2. Return of the Magnificent Seven The idea for the Magnificent Seven came from Texas Ghost, who wanted an organization that recognized Classic Cowboys (and later Cowgirls) who epitomized the costuming, shooting style, and giving back to CAS that we like to think characterizes the Classic Cowboy and Cowgirl categories. As he described it, like John Wayne said about gunfighters in "The Shootist", a Classic Cowboy or Cowgirl has to "be willin." It isn’t an easy category and rarely the fastest, but it attracts those who embrace the costuming and challenge that the category represents. Since 2010 we have been recognizing Classic Cowboys and Cowgirls who met these standards. Like any organization, the Magnificent Seven could use an injection of new blood to carry on the tradition. Sorta like a sequel, a few characters are returning but there is significant new blood. I want to thank Needmore Gunz and Tom Payne for their service and help with the Magnificent Seven. I will join them in rising to Emeritus status. Serenity, Augustus Goodnight, and Hot Tamale remain as part of the group. We had an empty slot, so this opened up four places. I am happy to introduce the newest members of the Magnificent Seven: Major Art Tillery, GW Ryder, Pony Soldier, and Dutch Coroner. Together with the remaining members, once more we have a full Magnificent Seven. I wish them the best of luck and continued success in promoting Classic Cowboy and Classic Cowgirl in SASS.

  6. Classic Cowboys and Cowgirls, those who enjoy shooting with Classic Cowboys and Cowgirls, and anyone else at Winter Range are all invited to the Classic Cowboy/Cowgirl Dinner at the Buffalo Chip Restaurant on Thursday, February 27, 2020. The Buffalo Chip is at 6823 Cave Creek Road, pretty much due east from Winter Range about 30 minutes off the Carefree highway. Doors open at 6 pm for cocktail hour; dinner ($14.95 a person) is at 7 pm and the awards will take place shortly after dinner. The Buffalo Chip has facilities outside and inside, so we can work it whatever the weather dishes out. Let us know if you plan to come so we can get an approximate headcount—but don’t hesitate to come on out even if you haven’t told us. We will make room so we can recognize these great shooters who are willin’ to follow the Classic Way.

  8. Classic Cowboy Dinner at Winter Range-Buffalo Chip 6:30 pm Thursday February 21. We are back at it again folks. At Winter Range we will have a whole heap of Classic Cowboys and Cowgirls, folks thinking about becoming Classic Cowboys and Cowgirls, and others who just enjoy being around us. So we like to have a get together for anyone who wants to come at which we recognize our Classic Cowboy and Cowgirl Shootists of the Year for the past year. These are folks who have shown themselves to be willing to shoot the big calibers one handed and master the mystery of the hammered shotgun while promoting the category for others to try. We had many worthy candidates, and our winners for 2018 are Major Art Tillery and Cayenne Kay. We will convene at the Buffalo Chip Saloon in Cave Creek for dinner at 6:30 Thursday February 21, which is the first day of the match. 16. Nominations close on Sunday September 10th. --last chance to nominate someone or say a good word about one already nominated! It is time again for you to nominate your favorite Classic Cowboy and Cowgirl for the Classic Cowboy Shootist of the Year and the Classic Cowgirl Shootist of the Year awards. We have had some fine winners and nominees over the years, and the Magnificent Seven want to continue the tradition. So give some thought to the cowboy and cowgirl who shoots the big bore guns, handles that hammered or lever shotgun with style, and dresses like a classic cowboy or cowgirl should. They don’t have to be the fastest or the showiest, they just have to have shown that they are willin’. Post your nomination in reply to this post. Give us some insight on their contributions to the category and the sport and why you think they should be one of our honorees. The Magnificent Seven will consider the nominations and announce their decision in the Fall with a presentation of the awards at Winter Range. As a reminder, here are our past Honorees: 2010: T-Bone Dooley 2011: Lefty Henderson- Shotglass 2012: RJ Law-Bella Spencer 2013: Big Six Henderson- Hot Tamale 2014: GW Ryder- Squawty Bawdy 2015: Doc Baker- Serenity 2016: The Tonic Kid- Marie Laveau Update: So many great nominees. It was a hard choice for the Magnificent Seven, and I complicated matters by being out of the country for nearly 3 months. But we have winners! Our Classic Cowboy Shootist of the Year for 2017 is Chili Pepper Kid. Our Classic Cowgirl Shootist of the Year for 2017 is Black Hills Barb. We are so proud of them. We will award them their buckles at Winter Range 2018.
  17. Howdy all. I shoot only FCGF, but I have been meaning to dabble in classic cowboy since I have all the guns and gear. This will just be for occasional shoots only and not my main shooting style. I plan to use my new 66 carbine or else my original Winchester 73, my hammered double or 87 or both, and my one long barrel colt. What I am hoping to gain by this thread is an idea for the second pistol. What I don't want is another long barrel colt (well that's not true, but in regards to this venture it is), but rather something more unique. I have a whitneyville dragoon as an option, but anything else will have to be a new purchase (oh poor me). Other options I am considering are a schofield, a le mat (say it ain't so), a walker, a Merwin and Hulbert, or anything other ideas you folks have. The only caveats are not a colt or clone or Remington, must shoot BP, and preferable a barrel close in length to the 7.5" colt. So what ideas have y'all got? Double points for stories based on experience and extra credit for pictures.
  18. Winter Range is almost upon us, and the Classics are gathering. We have arranged with the folks at Winter Range to allow us to make our presentation of the Classic Cowboy/Cowgirl Shootist of the Year awards at the Saturday Night banquet. We will be recognizing our honorees The Tobin Kid and Marie Laveau at that time. If you are not signed up for the Saturday banquet, no problem--Winter Range sells tickets ($18) right up until mealtime. In the last few years we have made our presentation at a big get-together Classic Cowboy Dinner out in Cave Creek, but when our venue burned down, it put a little crimp in our style. While the venue has been re-built, we have decided that for this year we will make the awards at the Saturday banquet. But what about the dinner? We are going retro. Originally the Classic Cowboy get-togethers were meeting at a local restaurant and sharing a meal. Not as big and fancy, but true to the spirit of the original get-togethers when the Magnificent Seven was conceived. So on Tuesday night, Feb. 21, we are heading to Chili's near the Ben Avery range. We will meet there around 6:30. We urge all Classic Cowboys and Cowgirls to come, and other cowboys and cowgirls are welcome too. The Chili's is located at 34710 N. North Valley Pkwy and the phone number is (623) 580-4100. Hope to see you there!
  19. My first video in 360. Audio is funky, but will pale to the fun in seeing 'all the angles'. SASS Cowboy Action in 360 Welsh Mountain Regulators New Holland, PA; October 22, 2016 Blaze Crittenden in Classic Cowboy glory! For best 'shooter' POV, forward to 34 sec and "Pause". Left click and hold on center of image. Drag Left-Right-Up-Down to get hat brim out of picture, rifle aimed most naturally, and both pistol targets in view. Start over and see what Blaze saw. You can even drag the image viewing direction to see what is going on around him. You can watch his eyes while shooting, watch him drawing and holstering his pistols, pulling shotshells, some of the posse around him, etc. Did I mention it is video in 360? Enjoy, Artic
  20. I have been shooting FCD for some time now. I have been thinking about a change. I have always liked the Classic Cowboy category. So this year at my state match I will be shooting Classic Cowboy, with BP of course! Now I know a lot of cowboys and cowgirls don't want to see anymore categories. But there is something about Frontier Classic Cowboy that I would love see as a SASS recognized category. But for now I will shoot with the smokeless Classic Cowboys and see how I do. Cheatin'
  21. Carson from OH won first place by doing a great job, and is as fine a cowboy as you ever want to meet. Congrats, 6 and Lil
  22. Congrats to Cowhand, top classic cowboy at land run 2014. And on the front page of overall scores...!
