Blackout at Bloody Basin and Road Runner Dust-up (Feb 10-12, 2023) This is a great opportunity to warm-up for the 2023 End of Trail (EOT) match, as the Arizona Cowboy Shooting Association (ACSA) matches are held at the same location as EOT (Ben Avery Shooting Facility). Blackout at Bloody Basin is the Arizona SASS State Black Powder match. The Road Runner Dust-up match is for the smokeless shooters. This is a combined 12-stage action-packed match with 6 stages on each day (Feb 11th and 12th). Side matches are on Feb. 10th. 136 max shooters, so be sure to sign up! Our goal is to provide an EOT-like experience for every shooter! STAGING: The permanent bays (Saloon, Fort, Coosie’s) and open bays will be used, much like the set up for EOT. Use of vertical staging, target placement, falling targets for pistol and/or rifle, and shooting sequences will be similar as well. INCLUDED in FEE: Main Match, Side Matches, and Sunday Lunch. I know goex got bought/acquired in February, but I cant say that I remember seeing any goex drop on the usual sites anytime recently. Am I terribly late to the party in that they for sure 100% won't be making anymore goex? Or is the company still just on an extended hiatus until further notice?

I'm sure these questions are out there somewhere, but I can't find them. 1. What is the difference between real Black Powder (I use 2FG in everything) and reenactor Black Powder? 2. Is 2FG any cleaner than reenactor? 3. Is there only one granulation? 4. Is it any harder to clean? 5. How does it perform? 6. Any problems with powder handling? (I use Lee's Automatic Powder Measure). I hope that's all the questions I have (for now). Thanks to any and all who respond.

My friend was loading 38's to be shot in both Uberti rifle & Ruger New Vaqueros & had a brain fart. He had about 1/2 of a 1050 powder hopper of APP & decided to top it up before starting the loading session. He dumped the APP into a measuring cup thru a strainer to eliminate any clumps, then poured 777 on top of it, also thru the strainer. Then, poured what he at the time didn't know was a mixture & filled up the hopper. He then made 200 bullets. My (I mean, "his") plan was to chamber-check all of them today, getting ready for Ga. State BP match for he & his wife, & for his wife's use at EOT, where she'll shoot BP in the main match. knowing my friend's wife as well as I do, if a mishap were to affect her performance at either match, I'm comfortable she would experiment with the ammo on him. As I see it, my friend's options are: 1) Shoot a few on the home range in both the rifle & the pistol & see what happens. Unfortunately, many of the bullets would be pure APP or pure 777, & wouldn't know when bullets with the mixture would show up. Kind of a Russian Roulette thing. 2) Set the bullets aside for further research & not try to shoot them until research completed. 3) Scrap the bullets & move on. 4) Your excellent suggestion that I didn't think of. Obviously, the safest option is to scrap them, along with the large amount of mixed powder now residing in a 777 container. Anyone have any experience or first hand knowledge here?

Only 59 days till the black powder double header of the year! I was asked last week if we were still going to have A Dark Day On The Santa Fe. I am sure that question has been on quite a few peoples mind. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has said that Florida will NOT be shutting down again, so yes, A Dark Day On The Santa Fe is still on! Due to the low attendance projection we have decided to move the opening ceremony/banquet to the range on Thursday night instead of being in Lake City. The social hour will start at 5:00, food will be served at 6:00. We will still be using the same caterer as we have had the past three years. She is excited to finally get to come out to the range! If you are interested in being on an all mask posse, please let me know. If there is enough interest we are happy to make accommodations. Also we will be adding extra loading tables where we can in order to better social distance. Where we can’t we will be limiting the number of people on the loading table. Shooting with the bunch last nite. One of the guys had 44-40 rounds loaded with black powder and moly coated bullets. This resulted in extreme fouling in the bore which was difficult to remove after only 12 shots. He also shot some rounds loaded with smokeless and the same moly coat bullets. These smokeless rounds did not cause fouling of the bore. OK; the answer is obvious but I wonder if anyone else has had this problem.

I'm sure this has been addressed before, but a search doesn't turn anything up. I want to load a BP synthetic (APP or maybe 777) on my Dillon 1050 for 38's & on my Dillon 650 for 32's. But, I don't want to blow myself up. I've heard comments on both sides of the fence. Can't do it, vs. "I've been doing it for years with no problems". Needless to say, it would save me LOTS of time when loading the little woman's bullets. I've never heard of anyone having an explosion doing this, but I don't want to be the first either. I can load lots of smokeless 38's & 32's in an insignificant amount of time, so it's really a drag using the dipper for every bullet when loading BP. If I decide not to use the 1050 & 650, I have bought a Lee perfect powder measure to speed up the loading, but I sure would like to use the P. presses. I understand the APP & 777 aren't as likely to clump as GOEX, but I have bought a strainer just to be sure. Share your knowledge & experience with me, please.

Hello Everyone! My first post here, but I have been reading a ton of the great posts already out there. Haven’t found an answer to this question / questions in the existing hall of knowledge so thought I would ask. I am certain that I want to shoot black powder in CAS. Even though I am a newbie and wet behind the ears. I have been shooting muzzle stuffers and c&b revolvers with real black powder for 20 years+. I am already addicted and have no desire to go to smokeless. As such I am asking this from the angle of bp loads rather than smokeless. I also reload a little bit, loading .45 Colt, .44 Russian, and .45-70 BPCR. For those of you that shoot .44-40 with BP, what kind of life do you get out of your brass? I have to admit, I am drawn by the history and authenticity (I am a part time blacksmith at a museum, to give you an idea) but I am intimidated by the thin brass on the neck. Not so much with reloading (y’all have posted some awesome info on that) but on just how fragile the cases seem to be. I have been shooting .45 Colt loads with BP for a couple of years in a revolver. Now that I am looking to get a lever gun I am researching my best options. On one side, I see a strong theme of folks loving .44-40 for bp in a lever gun, on the other I worry about the brass longevity/availability. For those folks that opt for the .45 Colt in a rifle and neck-size to reduce blow-by, how is the longevity on those cases? I would imagine that working the neck like that would cause them to wear out faster. Does that mean that neck-sizing .45 Colt will make the brass last about as long as .44-40 and it’s a wash? Sorry for the long post. I just thought giving a little background might be helpful. Thanks in advance for any help you might have, and for tolerating another greenhorn. In another thread a few people mentioned using old refrigerators to store powder to help fight humidity. I was wondering if those old fridges make suitable powder magazines. Now, I understand there's no need to keep smokeless powder in a magazine because it's not explosive, but eventually I'll load black powder and will want to keep it all in the same place. Will storing black powder in a fridge turn it into a potential bomb, or is the seal on the door weak enough that it's not an issue? Maybe the hole you have to drill for the power cord for the dehumidifier is enough to make it safe? Which brings me another question. Is there anything wrong with having an electric dehumidifier in a powder magazine with black powder? My gut tells me it's not a good idea, but I don't have any actual experience with gun powder beyond shooting.

I want to shoot black powder from paper shotgun hulls. Having a problem with paper hulls being damaged on the final crimp and size stage of my Lee LoadAll. The LoadAll uses a steel ring to size the hull base, which is not the problem. The most important feature of the LoadAll is the final station, which sizes the FRONT 2/3 of the shell, and completes a star crimp. The last station ensures shotshell is properly undersized (slightly) to drop into my double chambers. With paper hulls, the nylon sizing tube seems to "grab" the outside layer of (waxed) paper, and pull it down and away from the inner layers. I end up with an ugly, uneven crease near the base, and cockeyed shell. Hull does not look like it will survive another reload. If I do not pull all the way down to avoid hull damage, then the completed shell does not drop into my shell checker (barrel-set removed from my double, muzzle down). Hornady "One Shot" case lube would dissolve the wax in the paper hull outer layer. Would a chromed steel sizer on a MEC or Pacific/Hornady loader "slide" over the paper hulls, properly sizing on the last station? Is there another, separate sizing tool available? (The MEC "Super Sizer" is not an option, it only sizes the base.) How are other paper-hull BP shooters ensuring final results are properly sized? LoadAll fits much better in my tiny, temporary apartment than my MEC9000, Pacific 366, or PW375, which are in storage in another state.

Greeting SASS Forum Members! I am new to SASS and cowboy account shooting having only been out to 6-7 shoots this year. I am really enjoying the event and just shoot for the sake of having a good time. My Catagory I am going to compete in classic cowboy category, using the rule of cool I have ordered two of the biggest pieces of shooting irons a man can get. A brace of 1847 colt walkers from Uberti. After doing a little research I have stumbled on the subject of combustible paper cartridges. Is there any good advice to make them with round balls? Or is it better to use a conical projectile? How do you make either of them in the first place? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Whoever responds thank you very much for your time and consideration in this matter!

Even though I was taught to clean my guns, and did as a youngster, I quit. When I started shooting cowboy, all but my shot gun got trailboss loads. I never once cleaned a revolver other than wipe it off. Never used oil just because I found no need for it. Rifles being a bit different in need for attention, I did some cleaning there. I regularly inspected the revolvers but that was it. Now I’m shooting real black powder and have to step up. I start cleaning the revolvers (X4) usually 2 days after the shoot. I know from discussions and reading that the way to deal with black powder is to soak the parts or run water through it but I have an aversion to guns and water. So far a couple of dry brushes and jag swabs down the barrel and I’m done. Wipe off the outside and in the case without oil. I don’t find it to be messy and kind of cathodic. Post. Percussion cylinders are a bit more involved and yes, I find a quick soak and swab does the trick. Never have I seen a spot of rust and here in Pittsburgh the humidity runs high a good bit of the time. My point is so much of what we do is passed down as “that’s just the way we do it” How many of us continue to look for ways to do things that is not “just the way we do it”? It keeps things interesting and I tend to learn more about what I’m doing. What have you learned or changed since you started this cowboy game.

when shooting frontier in any category I know that the rifle and pistol are done with black powder, does the shotgun have to be black powder as well? I can't seem to find 12 gauge shells made in black powder, and don't have the ability to reload shotgun shell yet

My son is wanting to get into SASS and likes the "authentic" ways of doing things. We attended a local shoot and there was a gentleman using black powder which my son thought was AMAZING. That lead to a discussion about becoming active which lead to a discussion at work which lead us down the rabbit hole to this question. Is it legal to produce and use your own black powder for SASS and CAS events? We live in the Communist State of Illinois so I'm sure the answer is ABSOLUTELY NO. I've looked online and can't find any information this particular issue. I can find information about quantities, storage and the necessity of a FOID but nothing about making your own black powder for your own use. Can someone please help me with the answer so I can get him to calm down and we can just go buy a can?

In preparation for “going dark” at Dark Day on the Santa Fe, I just shot some black powder rounds for the first time EVER!! It was AWESOME!! Huge thanks to Amarillo Rattler, affectionately known as my BP Sugar Daddy, for loading for me! I cannot wait to shoot a whole black powder match! I understand that there are a few spots left! Honestly, it was one of the most fun matches I Shot last year - smokeless- I’m sure it’ll be even MORE fun “on the dark side”! Big hugs, Scarlett

So I'm a new guy starting out and I have no S.A. revolvers yet. I've always had a fascination with black powder and I owned several BP rifles back in the early 80's (flintlocks mostly), Compared to regular cartridge 6-guns, how does BP revolvers compare in cost when it comes to purchase of revolvers and the cost of cap, ball, and powder compared to commercial .38/.357 ammo? I received my Polish Capper. It's a slick set up and for Remington old army (Remington #10 caps) I see no better way to cap a Cylinder. With just a touch of work (file/polish) it would work on an Open top Revolver. I now have one less excuse....... LOL
