Here’s a question for the wires that I do not think I have seen answered. Frontier Cartridge has a smoke factor where the standard is 1cc of Goex 2F. Given that this is a subjective comparison, has anyone ever tried to compile smoke equivalencies for the BP subs out there like APP 3Fg, Multi Black, Triple Seven 2F &3F, and Pyrodex since all generate differing smoke clouds than Goex? For that matter what’s the cross reference for smoke between Goex 2F and 3F? thank y’all, Not Dead Ed.

I know this has been a much debated subject and it used to be a class but was scrapped but i think it is time for it to be revisited.I have never watched a documentary,read a book, or seen a photo of the old west with a Ruger,1894 Marlin or a hammerless shotgun in it.Wild bunch must run a 1911 ,1897 or 1912?? shotgun and a lever action rifle all period correct.Why not have a class under Frontier cartidge where a Colt 1873 or earler [includes cap and ball revolvers] must be used along with a winchester 1873 or earlier and a hammer shotgun it must be shot double duelist or gunfighter and all in black. Its getting to the stage now where i frequently turn up and there is only Rugers there.Idont care i will always shoot my 1860 coversions ,Dragoons, 1866 carbines and i only own hammer shotguns and at every shoot with out fail someone will come up and say it is the coolest thing they have ever seen.How can you have a class where cap and ball revolvers are shot with 1894 rifles and hammerless shotguns.What is the point??Lets just have one class where things are shot the way it would have been

Hello on the Wire, I'm sure this has probably been discussed before but I'm not having any luck with the search function of this forum. I have been toying with the idea of shooting in the Frontier Cartridge Category using BP or BP Substitute in a Smoke Wagon Deluxe in 44-40 or similar Colt clone by Uberti. I understand that the guns should be thoroughly cleaned and free of petroleum based lubricants, and instead lubed with a plant or animal based lube. My main questions are, Can I expect to go 6 stages without the gun starting to stiffen up from fouling on the face of the cylinder or base pin? and What tips and tricks can you suggest to keep the guns running longer without any problems? I was loading up some 38's the other night with my usual recipe and thought I should try some with black powder just for fun (well... substitute, no one locally sells the real stuff). I've shot muzzle loader and cap and ball ball before and always enjoyed it, but before today, I'd never shot any bp cartridges. I went out to the range today and I had a blast shooting those BP loads. It was everything I could hope for. I had so much fun seeing the smoke roll out of my favorite cowboy guns. Although, I was getting some irritated looks from the guy in the next stall shooting his rifle. My smoke was blowing back in his general direction. I figured we were even with his concussive reports coming off of his muzzle brake. I've think I've found my new favorite load to shoot. My only regret was that I didn't load up a few shotshells while I was at it. I was grinning the whole time though. My wife on the other hand, is not a fan of the smell of Pyrodex.
