Just acquired an Austrian made hammer gun from 1910. It has 2 5/8” chambers. Is there any information available about reloading for this? It does not have a Damascus barrel. It is my first Hammer gun and I’m new to reloading and SASS though I’ve got an extensive collection of Cowboy rifles and revolvers and black powder revolvers. I’d appreciate any tips or help in getting started reloading as far as what basic equipment is needed to reload .45 Colt, 12 gauge and 44-40.

To the average person, any sort of swirly lines on a gun looks good. I've even seen and heard folks rave on and on over some of the worst engraving I've ever laid my eyes on. I've been studying and learning hand engraving on and off for many years. Until you learn the proper form, structure, and flow of acanthus leaf scroll it probably does all look the same. The main "backbone" of a scroll is formed by a spiral that follows what is known as the Golden Mean ratio of approximately 1:1.161 Here is an example of a scroll outline by Master Engraver Sam Alfano with the inside and outside leaf elements drawn in. Note how there is NEVER a straight line in a scroll: Here are a couple of examples showing that same design with the shading lines cut: Note how the shade lines give the scrolls a sort of 3D appearance.
