I have a MEC Sizemaster 12 ga shotgun reloader for sale that I can deliver to the Ides of March Match.  This loader was very dusty and I have cleaned and lubed it and it works great but it could probably use more cleaning.  Everything works as it should and it makes a very nice load.  It has the adjustable powder and shot bar so you do not need bushings.  These really let you fine tune your powder drop and adjust the shot for perfect crimps.  If you can find one of the adjustable bars they alone are $100.   Asking $400.

I have a Ponsness Warren 800B shotgun loader for sale, will deliver to Ides of March.  Machine has been cleaned, oiled and freshly set up and adjusted.  Comes with a 1 1/8 oz shot bushing and a .468 powder bushing.  There are several different bushings that work in these, PW, Pacific, Hornady and they make an adapter that lets you use MEC powder bushings as well.  Ponsness Warren is still in business and stocks a lot of parts for this machine.  These make excellent reloads.  Asking $500.  I can deliver the machine to Ides of March match.  I can also ship this machine but they are very heavy and shipping will be around $100.  

[38 vs 357 brass]

The answer to your question may lie in what pistols are you shooting?  I shoot ruger vaquero's in 357.  I load everything in 38 special and load it to the length my rifle likes.  The pistols don't care about length.  This is for simplicity and not having to sort or separate rifle and pistol brass.  If both your rifle and pistols are 357 I would just load 38's to fit your rifle.  Some guys try to make this too complicated.

[Light loads for 38 s&w]

So from info I could find on the web it looks like the one I have is a black powder gun.  It is an Iver Johnson.  The owl on the grips faces forward, has the long cylinder leads and a leaf hammer spring.  The guy I got it from owned it for years and shot a lot of side matches with it and used light smokeless loads.  Serial number indicates it was made between 1909-1919.  I have some black powder, APP and 777 so that might be fun too!

I picked up a top break chambered in 38 s&w and would like to know what smokeless loads you guys are using in the pocket pistol side matches.  Yes I know the difference between a 38 special and 38 s&w.  Yes I have dies and reloading components.  Not really interested in shooting black powder.  I have just about any powder that might be recommended.

[Dillon XL650 Dropping Second shell]

If you have recently changed calibers make sure you changed the silver piece under the piece that goes back and forth bringing a shell casing to be dropped onto the feed slide.  Also make sure you have the insert in the piece that pivots under the casing feed tube.  Clean you case slide, track, and check the springs that pull the feed slide back forward.  Somehow it is letting more than one casing get on the slide.  Make sure your travel rod is adjusted the right length.

They may be silver soldered at the factory but a friend of mine knocked his off a year ago, we found the sight blade and I used the same lock tite glue that comes with the sure hit brass sights to glue it back in.  He shoots 2-3 cowboy matches a month and it hasn't come out yet so I wouldn't be afraid to replace a front sight blade.  Even if they are soldered any competent gunsmith should be able to do that simple process and put in a replacement blade.

Sure, it'll probably bring the value down - or at least limit the number of folks who'd even consider buying them, but I'm more concerned with where the bullet impacts.  Since I have no aspirations to sell (how can you sell a Vaquero and upgrade to a better pistol?), I'm not willing to use Kentucky windage on the range to simply maintain gun value.  Of course I'm just a new guy, so I need all the help I can get. 

 

I have a lot more fun when I quit caring about cart dings on wood stocks, the bluing rubbing off barrels, or the modified height of a front sight.  

Nice thing about vaqueros is the front sight blades are just glued in and factory height replacements can be bought from brownells for $6.  So don't worry about affecting resale.

First thing you should do is establish what load you want to shoot, bullet grain weight and fps.  Then use that load to regulate your front sight height.  I file all of my front sights to get them to hit where I want.

I bought a 3d printed case feeder for one of my 650's from a guy on mewe named Kevin Robert's.  He also has a Facebook page.  He is located in Thailand but ships them here.  If I remember right it was about $100 less than a dillon but had a better motor, variable speed motor and used electronic eyes I stead of a physical switch.  I have ran thousands of rounds through mine and it works great.

[shot shell question.]

There is an order to reloading shotgun shells.  You first select the hull you are going to use, then the amount of shot.  From there you look at the published data to determine what powder, primer and wad get you to the FPS and pressure you want.  These components all have to work together to make a usable shotgun shell. In today's climate of rarely available components you may have to see what powders are available and then pick your load and wad.    I tell all my beginning loaders the first thing you should buy is a Lyman 5th edition shotshell loading manual. 

[Trail Boss Update — 2024 Shot Show]

When I started in CAS just over 3 years ago I ran out and rounded up all the trail boss I could find.  I loaded with it for a while, went through about two cans of it and switched to clays.  Trail boss is big and fluffy but that's about all it has going for it.  It doesn't flow worth a crap through my dillon powder measure, drops donuts everywhere and is pretty dirty.  I wouldn't buy it if it does come back.
