  1. I gave up on auctions, estate sales and gun shows a very long time ago.
Here in my area, all are vastly over priced, charge for admission and charge for parking.
One still has to submit the background check forms, do the 10 day waiting period then come back after to pick up the gun.

    PITA.

  2. Most women will tell you that high heels are either designed by the Devil himself, or an ardent misogynist.

My bride wears "sensible heels" when required, and they still hurt her feet.
When we go to Eastern Star events that are Formal, several of the women wear tennies under those floor length formals.

  3. On the first of December 2023, I figured I had better look into a new Toyota pickup.

The 2024 models were reduced engine sizes then boosted with turbo charges, which I absolutely did not want.
To compound this, the 2024 line is even larger, heavier, bigger, wider and higher, which I also did not want.
The ultimate deal breaker for the 2024 line was the inclusion of EV batteries.
The 2024 line is all new Version 1.0.0 engines, with all the problems that come with Version 1.0.0 products.
    No thanks.

I did not want the 4-door truck and too-short bed.
A manual transmission is literally impossible... only 1.4% of all Tacomas manufactured have a manual, and by special order only.

Thus ends 60 years of my driving a stick shift...

I was searching for the V6, Access Cab, and Ice Cap (standard) white color, as mandatory requirements.
4wd was optional, which I wound up with.
I was not interested in the fancy trim level with even more plastic parts.. just a basic truck.

After calling three states and a dozen dealerships, I finally found one in Fresno.
The internet sales manager told me to get down there with a cashier's check the next day, or it would be sold to somebody else.

We drove the 175 miles down to Fresno the next day with a cashier's check in-hand.
Dealing with the fleet / internet manager was simple and elegant.
None of the B.S. of dealing with the sales vultures that hang around the front of the lot that have to play offer games with their manager.
I was given a cash price over the phone, brought a check, and out within an hour.

And got 26.2 mpg on the 175 ride back home.

  4. My new indoor range allows up to, but not including 50 BMG.

    This includes shotguns and rifles.

It is much closer than my old outdoor range, and does cost a bit more each month, which I save on gas.

The outdoor range is losing money (salaries, I will bet) so they jacked up the annual membership fee, and the daily range fees, and lost me as a member.

Bud Light has paved the way for how to lose money by pissing off customers.

  5. New Tacomas (and probably all the others) are very finicky compared to my 1991 Truck.
The Tacoma oil filter is a plastic cartridge that is removed and a filter insert is changed.
It has to be torqued to 18.00 ft-lbs or it will either break the plastic, or it will be so tight it can't be removed.

The variable valve timing is highly complex and demands pristine oil quality due to the many tiny moving parts.
The good news is variable timing is a boost for both low end torque and mileage.
A deep dive explanation is here:

  6. The 2023 is the last of its breed.
Toyota is retiring the 3.6l after many years of development.
This engine is as good as it will ever get.
The 2024s are smaller engines with turbos and EV batteries... no thanks.

The secret to v6 VVT-i longevity is clean oil.
The factory change interval is FAR too lengthy to maintain pristine oil quality.

If he changes his own, a MotivX tool and 18 ft-lb torque wrench are required tools.
The filter assembly is very sensitive to over torquing, which is why I will be doing my own again, instead of the shops.

I'm getting 19.2 mpg around town, and 26.2 on the freeway.

  7. Or in the car...  :P

I never saw her at all, when I bought my new Tacoma.
I got a look at the 2024 line, said "absolutely not" and found a 2023 in December.
Had to call three states and a dozen dealships to find what I wanted.

She was not part of the package.

  8. We find that we now have to do the same here in CA...

Apparently, being over age 70 requires one to again take the written exam, and possibly a driving exam.

I cheat:  I have a plastic card in my wallet that spells out my name correctly...

    :P

I spent about 1000.00 that day 10 years ago at 50% off .

I did the same for the two days when Judge Benitez kicked CA ass and set aside their background check for ammo.
LAX Ammo took awhile to fill the order, but they did honor all orders received in that two day window before CA found another activist judge who closed down mail order ammo once again.
