About Me
Julius Bernard Chandler was a 25 years old when he joined the Union Army as a private with the 12th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He served nearly the entire Civil War, serving from June 1861 to July 1864 and then reenlisting in September 1864 and served until the end of the war. The 12th Massachusetts saw action in some of the most infamous battles of the Civil War, including Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania. Many of those battles had very high casualty rates for the 12th Massachusetts. One of the worst for the 12th was Antietam, where they suffered the highest losses of all the Union Army regiments present. Of the 334 soldiers that went into battle, 224 were killed, wounded or missing, resulting in a roughly 67% loss rate. At the end of the battle the 12th regrouped and only 32 men were standing to rally around the colors. J. B. Chandler somehow managed to survive and returned home to Duxbury, MA.
