They just don't tell you which "this spring" they are referring to.
I've been waiting 3 springs for a set of Dillion 44 mag. carbide dies.

I waited 15 "seasons" for 44-40 Winchester brass and JSP bullets, finally gave up years ago. To this day I have NEVER seen any factory 44-40 Winchester or Remington ammunition or components in any store I have ever been in.....LOL

The answer to everything use to be "in two weeks", now it is "this spring"!!!

Doc,
What is the contact for the company that sells cylinders? If I can just get 44-40 cylinders to put into my OM Vaquero Bisleys that might be the simplest and cheapest way to go.
DD
However you obtain a 44-40 cylinder, just make sure it is cut properly to utilize .429/.430 bullets.
Here is an old link to a 2014 topic about the OMV 44-40 and 44 Mag cylinder.

I saw on the Ruger Forum some 44/40 to 44Mag convertibles- both Super Blackhawk and Vaqueros. There were several companies selling cylinders, including Ruger, but
my impression from the discussion was a 44Special gun that they used 44/40 cylinders. Anybody have, or used or attempted a conversion like I'm describing ?
Thanks for your advice,
Deacon Doug
Should be Super Blackhawk and Old Model Vaquero. The Old Model has a larger frame, I believe, as compared to the New Model
I have the Uberti Buckhorn 44 Mag revolver with a 44-40 conversion cylinder.
As usual, only 44 Mag/44 Special for the same cylinder. The 44-40 is a separate cylinder. If you order a cylinder for it, either-or, you will have "fit-it", or get it "fitted", more than likely.

GREAT REPORT!
4" at 100 yards is good. the 44-40 doesn't get much better than that.....consistency speaks volumes!
Winchester Repeating Arms, December 20th, 1873 mailed news letter.
Winchester's first announcement in their very own catalog was not offered until 1875. Of course the catalog was dominated by the introduction of the 73' rifle. There are no less than 62 testimonials and one 110 yard group by Doc Pardee, which should give a hint as to how many were received by their new owners by the end of 1874. Aside from Winchester's 1875 catalog, Winchester also placed adds in the 1875, August 21st, Forest & Stream publications. These adds actually took the place Remington's add, pushing Remington down to a smaller add. Included in one add are more long distance shooting targets to include Doc's 110 yard group. The 73' had already proven itself and in just a tad over a year, Winchester dropped the Forest & Stream ads (Nov 1876).

Savvy Jack- I shot NRA silhouette in the 1980's with a Ruger SBH at 100 yards. I used Win. brass and primers, 27.3 gr of Win 296 and Hornady 200grJHP( not SASS legal). If I did my part it would shoot 4 inch groups at 100 yd, it was very loud and abusive to shoot, but oh so fun. I no longer have the paper targets to back this up, but I still have some of the ammo and still have the SBH.

Now we need some rifle reports

I always find it interesting the discussions on if a certain caliber will work for long range.
If you want to shoot 1MOA then pistol caliber rifles aren't the ticket.
I hvae shot my 66 44-40 out to 300 yards on a 36" target. Hit 10 out of 10 on a non-windy day.
We shoot 22 caliber silhouette out to 200 yards, the ram being about 9" wide and 7" tall.
I had a 73 in 30" 44-40 for long range. I only shoot black powder. I found the barrel fouled out real quick. Using a blow tube didn't work well.
Dont recall anyone saying they wanted 1MOA but......
the 44-40 is loads of fun out to 300 yards, and proper loads can replicate early 66' hit placements at 250 yards.
Will be interesting to see if anyone logs and shares such data with the 45 Colt cartridge or even 44 Magnum/Special loads.
Folks talk about it all the time but don't seem to like to share the target photos.

I host long range matches at my farm during the summer. Targets for long range pistol caliber rifles are set at 100, 150 & 200 yards. The 100 yd. target measures 11" high by 10 " wide. The 150 & 200s are 17h x 14w. The course of fire is three shots each off cross sticks. Nine for nine is not unusual. Shooters have Win 73s, Marlin 94s, Rossi 92s, etc. in 45 Colt, 44-40, & .357. Most have vernier tang sights & globe front sights. Sometimes we play "hopscotch". Starting at 100 yds & progressing to see how far out you can get in ten shots. Hits have been made out to 500 yds. The targets do get progressively larger. Rifle caliber levers & single shots are also used with targets out to 800 yds. It's all fun.
I can't hit the backside of a barn now without a scope out that far.....nor without a bench rest.... After today, I can't hit anything at 35 yards neither!

Can I get your thoughts on using a .45 Colt as a 200 yard target rifle? I have a Navy Arms 1873 with a 30" barrel I want to use as a 100 and 200 yard target rifle. And, yes, I know there are much better cartridges, however, it's what I have. I have a Skinner ladder sight on it and it's great at 100. My current loading is 9 grains of Unique behind a 250 gr SNS round nose flat point. Haven't taken it out to 200, yet. What's your thoughts???
I would also like to learn of the results of someone who shoots the 45 Colt at 200 yards in the 73'.
Using a standard 250gr lead bullet along with a comparison between pistol powders and rifle powders.
Here are my results using the 44-40 and a 73', but also with a scope.
265 to 300 yards (I measured 265 yards, but the range claims 300 yards)The comparison is between Winchester's 1866 Switzerland Trials (hits in white), John Kort's replicated 44 Henry ballistics using a reduced 44-40 loads (hits in blue), and my custom loads in the 44-40 for 1,350fps. (actual holes).
Would really be nice to add the 45 Colt cartridge rifle performance at the same ranges as if it had been available back then in the 73'- 1

I figured the drop at 200 yards would be between 40 and 45 inches. That would be my "rainbow trajectory" to deal with.
You only have to deal with it, if it is not zeroed in for 200 yards.
