  1. Hello ,  My name is Mike. I own a 45-90 hepburn. Have you ever used a large pistol primer instead of a large rifle primer???  Large rifle primers are hard to find.  What is your thoughts. Thank you. I live in whitefish, Montana

It’s pretty easy. I paper patch my bullets using 8# airmail paper which is also known as  transparency paper. If you have a paper punch (or just use an empty brass case and punch it through the paper on a piece of rubber (or wood)you’ll wind up with a very thin circular disc of paper the size of your case diameter. You just put that into the bottom of your primed case before the powder drop. Might need to use a thin dowel or punch or whatever to get it to seat flat on the inside of the case. The idea behind it is not mine. Has been done for years in BPCR.  The concept is that the disc slows the primer spark into the powder charge and ignited the powder from the tea forward. This May in turn reduce the initial push of the primer on the bullet before the powder ignites. Some folks see it as unnecessary. Others claim they see a difference in vertical stringing at 1000yds. I haven’t noticed much of a difference but have been doing it long enough that changing up might be a mental thing for me when shooting. So I will likely keep doing it. You should hit me up sometime if you’re down this way or if there’s a range in between us. Happy to meet up sometime.

Hey there pard!  I’m just down the fill in Missoula if you’re ever down this way. I have not used them but don’t see why they wouldn’t work. I usually use a Large rifle match primer with a piece of patching paper over the flash hole, under the powder. I think the only reason not to use a LPP would be that it might sit lower in the pocket than the LRP. Only one way to find out and you certainly won’t hurt anything. My Hepburn is a 40-65.
