Congress gave Army and Air Force veterans wearing civies the right to salute for the national anthem, which I do. Some others do it as well. The Navy and Marines have their own rules.

When this was done, (2002 or 2003 if my rememberer is correct), the Commandant of The Marine Corps issued a statement that Marines still do not salute while out of uniform.

The joke is that everything inside the B-52 has been replaced at least once....except for the seat cushions.

kind of like the guy that claimed to have Abe Lincoln's ax. Handle's been replaced three times, the head twice.

Nature abhors a vacuum.  Other smiths will emerge to replace the revered artisans we have loved.  They will be winnowed by the fires of internet natural selection and word of mouth experiences, to become another generation of respected craftsmen.

I'd like to think that you're right, but part of the problem is that they're not making GUNS like that anymore. It seem like the majority of new guns coming out today are plastic, striker fired pistols, (Glocks), and ARs. New gunsmiths aren't interested in working on older guns.

It's kind of like that old story about the guy who takes his '69 MUstang to the local mechanic. He tells the young mechanic how he needs the timing, dwell, vacuum advance set, etc. The young mechanic, who doesn't know how to do anything if he can't test it with his OBD2 scanner, calls to the back room, "Hey dad, there's another Old guy out here to see you."

If you've read some of my posts, you might know that I have great affection for Taurus 85 revolvers. I have a half dozen of them, three 2" and three 3". I used to have four 2" and two 3". I came across a guy on ebay that had a 3" barrel and cylinder for sale. I bought them with the intent of making another 3" gun from one of the 2" guns. I talked to several "gunsmiths" around here, and none of them wanted the project. I finally managed to find a guy to do it, but it wasn't easy. The only things the other guys wanted to work on were Glocks and ARs.

President Garfield was born and raised and lived in Ohio! 🇺🇸

Minor bit of trivia here: More Presidents have been born in Ohio that any other state.

Caveat: Ohio and Virginia both claim William Henry Harrison

    What is a "civilian salute?"

    Boy scout?  Hand over heart?

Not a salute, but in doing so, one indicates that he is not bearing arms, or that he appears to have genuine intentions, or is giving his word of honor, or is pledging allegiance.

It used to be that the flag was saluted with the right arm extended and the palm face down. Congress passed legislation in 1942 instructing Americans to place their right hand over the heart instead, this gesture of respect too closely resembled the Nazi salute.

  6. Army and Air Force salute whether in uniform or not. Their Officers return the salute whether in uniform or not. Marines and I think Navy, ONLY salute while in uniform.

Marines in uniform salute an Officer and greet the Officer appropriately, as in "Good morning Sir." whether the Officer is in uniform or not. In uniform, the Officer will of course return the salute. Out of uniform, the Officer will acknowledge the salute, usually with a curt nod, and will return the greeting, as in "Good morning Marine."

Marines out of uniform will simply greet the Officer appropriately, as in "Good morning Sir." The Officer, whether in uniform or not will return the greeting, as in "Good morning Marine."

I do have one problem with the operation,. Setting them off when non-combatants could be (and clearly were) present like markets or in vehicles driving down city streets. I recognize human shields are a part of how these groups function, and recognize this reinforces their agenda.

Even if some of these people are "non-combatants", they all stand up and cheer when the "combatants" kill and maim anybody who doesn't believe the same as they do. The "non-combatants" aren't saying "STOP THAT!" to those who are shooting at, firing rockets at, blowing up, or otherwise waging war on others, who just about a year ago were going about their business, living their daily lives, doing NOTHING to provoke anybody. Their people started this thing, and the "non-combatants" are complicit in the death and destruction that has been going on ever since. As far as I'm concerned, they deserve no more mercy than the "combatants".

Moderators, as always, if my commentary is over the line, please do what you must and I'll understand.

I have gotten all the way through a day and and gone to put my smartphone back on the charger to find I never turned the thing on.  And never noticed - or cared - that it was off.  I occasionally use it for GPS map directions and that's actually pretty much it.

I don't even HAVE a smartphone. I'm still rockin' a flip phone. And I don't use it much. I only carry it with me when I leave the house, and I only use it to make the occasional call. I don't text, and I for DARN sure don't try to use my phone as a confuser to check my email and such.

As for social media, this is pretty much it. No Fake Book, no Tic Tac, no Instacrap, none of it. There's nothing going on in the world that I need to know about that can't wait until I get home to see it.

If they come here and do the same thing with smart phones we'll lose 90% of our under 25 year old population.

I'd guess that it would be closer to 90% of our population period. I see smartphone zombies of all ages everywhere. I especially see them, old AND young at my gym. They're sitting on a piece of equipment I want to use, fiddling on their phones instead of actually working out.

I see them in restaurants. Groups of people, small and large, sometimes entire families, sitting together, ALL on their smartphones instead of enjoying each other's company.

Get yourselves some Susan B. Anthony dollars. You'll really blow their minds.

When I was a Young Marine, I spent some time in the "Girly" bars on Court Street. A beer at that time was $1.25 or $1.50 They used to give change for large bills in quarters and S.B.A.s. The girls would ask if they could keep the change as a tip, figuring that as the night went on, and the customers got more inebriated, they wouldn't notice the S.B.A.s mixed in with the quarters, since they were almost the same size.

I never stayed that late, and put the S.B.A.s in my shirt pocket to keep from mixing them up. When ordering another beer, would pay for it with the S.B.A.s. Sometimes I'd leave that bar and go to another and use them there.

A******s aren't just limited to Massachusetts, they come from every State of the Union.;)

I've know some real good people from Massachusetts and the New England area that came down here to Florida as Yankees, stayed and are now my friends.

    You're painting with a pretty wide brush.^_^

Two and a half years living among them. I've known good people from Massatooshits too, Key is FROM there.

Agreed there are a******s everywhere, but per capita, I met a lot more there.

I got kicked out of a restaurant up there for asking for Iced Tea. It was Winter, and I asked for Iced Tea. I was haughtily informed that it wasn't  Iced Tea Season. I asked if they served coffee in the Summer, since coffee is hot, and was told of COURSE  they served coffee in the Summer. I asked why the same wasn't true for Iced Tea, and was asked to leave.

In Louisiana the charges are presented to the Grand Jury and they decide if it should be a true bill or no true bill and discharged. That keeps the DA to keep getting elected

Louisiana law wasn't written by pilgrims. If you've never been around them, you have no idea how bad these people are.

During rush hour, the breakdown lane on the Highway is treated like a high speed passing lane.

Merely commenting that you saw that one of their sports teams lost a game is a perfectly justifiable reason to start a fight.

Stopping for people in a crosswalk will get you looks of disbelief.

Not making a right turn on red when there is a SIGN saying "No Right Turn on Red" will result in horns being blown at you and other drivers yelling at you, "HE!!, THAT DON'T MEAN ANYTHING".

When my first wife worked at a doughnut shop, she would greet customers with a cheary, "Hi, how y'all doin' today?" (she was from Louisiana), which would earn her a sneer and a "Why don't you go back down South where you belong?" from said customers.

As both a Marine and a truck driver, I've been all over this great country of ours. One place I never want to see again is Massatooshits.

Oh yeah, as a Marine, I met other Marines who were from Massatooshits. To a man, they said they were never going back.
