How many rounds would you put through your '73's before you would feel the need to do a deep clean?

When I do cleaning it’s usually four ‘73s, four SKBs and 8 Vaqueros/Single Sixes, so I don’t do it more than I have to.

I ‘deep’ cleaned all 16 guns in the week between Christmas and New Years. We’ve shot about 13 matches since then. Typically I would go another month or so then clean, but SC State is three weeks away, so I’ll clean them this week, Then again before the GA State Match in May. They probably won’t get cleaned again until a few weeks before the National.

  2. Ron Bellamy is a straight shooter. I saw a hat he was selling one day and mentioned that my wife would like it and if he would bring it to the next match I would buy it (I didn’t have cash with me). Ron said take it and pay me the next time you see me. She’s still wearing that hat.

    Ron is solid gold.

  4. I’ve used GB for about ten years now, both buying and selling, but primarily buying.

I bought all our SKBs on GB, most recently an SKB 100 I bought a few years ago for less than $600 delivered.

Deals can be found, but you have to be patient. I have it run automated search’s every night for SKBs, 1873s and Vaquero’s. I get emails every morning with new listings.

Every now and then I see a deal and it keeps me aware of current prices.

It says 1st Place on the buckle, I'm betting this is 1st place, not state champ.

PS I have a set of New Model Vaquero's so one would think I know the difference. Thanks.

    I don't believe there is a difference.

I'm pretty sure there are OMVs and NMVs and that's it.  The NMV says 'New Vaquero' at least my SASS Vaqueros do and so do my son's Vaqueros.

If there is a third variation of Vaqueros I've never heard of it.

    • Thanks 1
  10. We have two sets of Jimmy Spurs Rugers and a third pair are with him now being worked on.  If you're going to have them worked on I wouldn't bother with changing the springs as the gunsmith will be modifying those anyway.

If you're not going to send them to a smith then I would use the 17 lb springs.

  11. We're getting a little push here at the end.  We're now up to 52!  The deadline is tomorrow.  An email, DM, or post here will be sufficient to get you in.  You can always mail the $20 later. Also, Ophelia Payne is collecting applications at Florida State, which kicks off first thing in the morning!!

  12. We're up to 49 people!  The deadline to sign up is Friday, the Ides of March the first day of the Florida State main match!  Good luck to all the shooters!

I don't have to receive your app by Friday, contacting me here or by email or DM will be fine!

  13. Respectfully I think your observation about shotgun reloading may be area specific.  The majority of cowboys I shoot with reload shotgun.  It's unusual to see a large quantity of hulls that don't get picked up.  You will rarely see Remington Gun Club or Remington STS being left behind, despite the fact that those hulls are used very regularly in this area.

Having said that, shotgun reloading is certainly less common that metallic cartridge reloading.  I think the answer to that is probably that we use a lot fewer shotgun shells than we do metallic cartridge and the savings for reloading shotshells is lower.  You might save 5 bucks or so per box, so for an individual maybe $20-$30 a month.  For metallic cartridge you're probably saving closer to $30 per match (.19 to reload and .50 to buy new multiplied by 120 rounds) which means monthly savings of $120-$180 depending upon matches shot per month.  Given my family shoots 4-6 matches a month and has 2-4 people at each match, reloading shotshells generates savings of $50-$120 a month.

    Here is an interesting observation.

While almost all of us reload our pistol and rifle ammo, relatively few of us reload our shotgun ammo.   I base this on two observations.

    1.  At every shoot go to, almost no one keeps their empty shotshells to reload them.  They wind up being discarded.   I even have to tell the brass pickers that I want mine back, when I'm not shooting all brass ones.

    2.  Every time something other than 12 gauge comes up, people talk about how hard it is to find ammo in that gauge, something that is not as much of a problem if you roll your own.

I would have figured that for something like 28 gauge, which I admit to having never even heard of until this thread, would be almost universally a handloading endeavor.

    Which brings up two questions....

    1.  Why is shotgun reloading so uncommon in our game?

    2.  Does Magtech make all brass cases in this oddball gauges?

    TN State application information:

Its rumored (and I don't know where this rumor started) that the original

application for the TN State had a "Please don't put me on a Posse with.........."

space but when TW found out about it, he had them remove it because he

didn't want to be the only one on his Posse.   He hates picking up his own brass.

I wish folks wouldn't start these kind of rumors.   Everybody knows that TW has

good friends....... and BOTH of them would be on his Posse!

    ..........Widder

I think just watching TW and Widder go after each other would be worth the price of admission, kind of like watching a train wreck, you can't look away.   They kind of remind me of Laurel and Hardy.

Throw in a topnotch match, great folks, great awards and great door prizes and it's a heck of a deal.
