  1. Similar to cloudiest places in US is foggiest place in US.  Eureka CA was used by the US Army Air Corps in WWII for training cockpit crew in zero-zero visibility flying skills.  I was told this by a coworker who worked out of Eureka.  He had asked me to look at a diesel electric log stacker at a lumber mill north of Eureka.  After twice having flights canceled after I drove to SFO the 3rd trip to airport was successful.

The article said an MM1 left the flashlight on the engine intake shroud so I assume by this it was a Navy plane. MM1 is Machinist Mate first class petty officer (E-6)

Most E-6’s in the Navy are career Navy. That MM1 will have this incident follow him or her the rest of their time in the Navy, as they should. An E-6 should know better.
I wonder if the Navy still maintains that weather station in Greenland?

I see some new digs for that MM1 in the future.

In some MOS's, ones that require a longer commitment because training takes a long time E-6 before separation is not uncommon.  My youngest grandson reached the rank of PO1 as a member of the CVN-78's reactor crew.  He separated before the Ford was deployed to the Mediterranean.

Unless the DOD requires personnel performing aircraft inspections and maintenance to pass through metal detectors these types of accidents will happen in the future because of human factors.  Additionally besides shadows of tools in toolboxes even tool in the box should have RFI tags so tools in boxes scanned before storage in tool room.  With the RFID inventory checks are automated which  eliminates the human errors except for cheating.

  3. From what I read about the 30 SC when it was released by Federal it answers the need for magazines that carry more rounds than you can in a compact 9.

Forget the 5.7X28.  The pistols are full size.  The round was developed by FN for defeating Russian body armor with a P90 sub gun.  From what I have read reloading results are less that good.

  4. I suppose two LGS's for a city of ,is a lot however 18,000 more people live in the county with most 20 miles of the city center.  One of the LGS is just a mile west of town has been there much longer than I have lived here.  I am sure their dollar sales are overwhelming beer, wine & booze.  Sporting goods, guns & ammo take up most of the floor space though.  I say more alcoholic beverages because it is located on Hwy 50 and the parking lot has more vehicles after 3PM on weekdays.  Three miles west on 50 is the newest LGS.  The proprietor 1.5 years ago was a kitchen table dealer that only did business between 4 & 6PM weekdays & midday Saturday.  He has a day job at the NAS.  This LGS is the only suppressor dealer within 60 miles.  A feast of LGS's & bigbox sporting goods stores are 60 miles west of Fallon.

All joking aside.....why is it on there?

If it was on something like ...I don't know say some sunscreen that had a known carcinogenic additive then I could understand, but doesn't putting it on everything dilute the message to such an extent that everyone would just ignore whatever its on?

Has someone made a fortune out of this????

I voted against Prop 65 because I knew that the warning signs on entrances to businesses & label on every product will eventually be so ubiquitous that only wack jobs will even see them..  The labels on most products are to prevent lawsuits like the safety labels on ladders.

And not all black rifles are AR15s.

True however the AR-15 is the 1st & the only erector set rifle.  No riveting & no headspacing.

P.S. My 1st build was an AR-10 & the only special tooling were a GO & No Go gauges.  Because the upper & lower receivers were proprietary the bolt catch/release were installed.

I had to buy a PTR-106 a H&K 91 clone.  They and the CETME's are the most environmentally hardened black rifles

  7. What do you expect from a long article re. firearms from the NY Times or the LA Times.  The neglected to mention that the trans perp passed up their intended target because it was harder target.  If they had it would have implied that the "Safer school" wasn't safer than their neighborhood public school.

They’ll try to withhold funding in other areas to coerce those states that refuse!!

    Any takers on that bet??

Unless the funding is in the enabling legislation it is unconstitutional for the Executive branch to withhold funding from appropriated for other purposes.  See SCOTUS case during the 45th presidents term re. with holding funds appropriated for policing if state and/or local law enforcement or courts refuse to cooperate with ICE SANS a court order.  DJT lost that case.

  9. I have never fired an AK pattern rifle.  I only handed a gun collector friend's Valmet.  He won't own a machined or stamped steel Comblock AK.  I doubt it's anti communism.  His other AK pattern rifle in his collection is a Galil.  The only AK pattern rifle I own would be the Galil because of it's ambi controls.  I think it is the superior workmanship found in western manufacture arms.  Today why by a Century or PSA AKM made from used AK parts kit when you can by a new mfg. AR-15.  An AR-10 is in the same price range as new Polish & Czechoslovakian AK's assembled in US with US receivers.

  10. They've been carrying a lot of the new Winchesters as well. Saw several 1873's go through there and I believe he's got an 1892 in 45 colt made by Winchester/Miroku. I don't know much about that gun, but it sure looks nice. He also had two real Colts, which was the first time I had ever seen them in the shop. One in 45 and the other a really nice 44-40, BP frame with "frontier six shooter" etched on the barrel. Both priced on the high side, but very nice looking.

I am surprised you haven't seen Colts in there before*. The Colt Sporter A2 HBAR I own I bought from OWGR in 1999 a month before the gun grabbers in Sacramento passed the AWB. The price of it went up 25% in one month. The owner told me the Colt salesman talked him into buying one A2 HBAR & one A3 HBAR. Must have been a offer he couldn't refuse; since, MSR's are not his cup of tea. *Haven't been in there since before I retired in Dec. 2012. These days the closest I get to EC is Discovery Bay when visiting my son and his family.

  11. I also had a good trip to the lgs. I had to go pick up my new colt from jail (10 day wait) and happened to see something I'd never seen before. It was a little Merwin and Hulbert 38 s&w pocket pistol. Because it was an antique, I was able to walk right out with it as well. What a really neat gun. I've never seen anything like it before. Now I've finally got that pocket pistol taken care of.

    Kid,

How far & how long does it take you to get to your LGS? There hasn't been a LGS in Oaktown since July of 2000 when Siegle's closed up shop. If it is 4 cities north on I 80 I am not surprised you found the M&H. The Old West Gun Room has been selling military and other collectable firearms for longer than I can remember (1950's). As a child I remember a halftrack parked on a side street next to the store when the store was in another location in EC.

  12. The statute that allows Congress to veto the regulations dates to 1995 and even applies to regulation by Dear Colleague Letter's like the Dept. of Education transgender bathroom rules. The interesting thing about the law is the clock on Congress's regulation veto power doesn't start until the Congress receives a report on the from the Administration. These reports have not been routinely submitted to Congress; so, the House leadership are notifying all the executive branch agencies directing them to determine what regulations & guidance's have not followed the statutory procedures and for those that haven't submit them for Congressional approval. Also, the Reuters article states that the votes can't be filibustered in the Senate but doesn't state why. It is not Senate rules; but the statute doesn't allow a super majority vote to end debate. Al that is required to flush the regulation is 51 votes even if it is 51/50 where the Veep casts the 51st vote against the regulation. Striking a regulation in this manner only works when POTUS agrees with Congress. Removing regulations via the normal rule making process takes much longer than having Congress do it for those that are beyond the statute's time limits.

  13. The loads are too light and the primers are not re-seating under recoil. Up the load a little and the problem should go away.

    Best regards,

    +1

What primers are you using. With Cowboy Fast Draw 45LC cartridges the brand of 209 primers matters in my Ruger NMV's. The NMV's lock-up with Remington 209 primers. Since there is no powder in CFD cartridges it can only be the strength of the primer cup that is the issue. Note: Primer setback is not an issue with CFD pistol lock-up since the 209 primers will fall out with the force of gravity.

  14. I believe there is some Federal law that allows someone from another state to bring his guns into a different state for the purpose of shooting an NRA sanctioned event. I have been told that you can have your guns in the other state for 48 hours before and 48 hours after the event. You must also have a flyer or registration form with you to prove your are going to an out of state match. Not positive about this but this is what I have heard.

NY frequently ignores Federal laws regarding transportation of firearms. There are many anecdotal stories of air travelers with flight changes in one of the NYC airports that have firearms carried legally in their checked baggage and when because of their connecting flight cancelation picking up their bags at baggage claim & being arrested by NY LEO's.

  15. Joe,

That EBR in the picture isn't legal in CA under the old CA AWB, except under the exceptions carved out for LEO's. It has too many features. The Rainier Arms lower wasn't mfg before 2000 or 1990. The black device attached to the muzzle disappeared from CA legal AR's after 1989.

    Hardpan,

Under the revised CA AWB even if your bullet button AR has an A2 "Fixed" stock or your bullet button gun requires either installing a fixed magazine device or removing the pistol grip to not require registration. Exile Machine makes a CA legal replacement for the pilot grip. The product model is called the "Hammerhead". http://www.exilemachine.net/shop/exile-machine-hammerhead-ca-legal-ar-stock-adapter-blk-1.html
