  1. I picked up most of the lead while working and from friends in construction that didn't want to pay for disposal, far as I'm concerned it's recycled waste even been paid to cart some off. Cost of acquisition=0.

Casting's a hobby. I use it to have something better to do than watch the idiot box. Time spent =+1.

Sure the fuel costs some but it's a negligible amount.

Bullet lube is cheap. $5-7 for a tube that'll lube 1000+ bullets?

Molds were gifts so... yeah no cost there.

Far as I'm concerned it's about near free as it gets.

My only real cost has been brass, primers, and powder. Somehow I have more brass than what I've bought by a couple of hundred rounds. I get good deals on primers and powder.

Shooting my cowboy loads has turned out to be fairly cheap. That's why I like it.

  2. I just hate how big Bond derringers are.

I do too. That's why I'm looking into the American Derringer. It's much smaller and more in line with the old Remington Double Derringer. It's still a bit big but not nearly as large as the Bonds.

I have a 22 High Standard derringer that can be shot either double action or single action. Would this be legal in a match if only the single action mode was used?

    …Too Tall...

I think it has to be SA only. Scratch that, no mention in the rules.

    From Shooter's handbook page 18
    POCKET PISTOLS AND DERRINGERS
Pocket pistols and Derringers are popular for use in side matches and are occasionally introduced as an additional firearm in main match stages.
A pocket pistol is a small frame, fixed sight, pre-1900 design revolver having a barrel length of four inches or less. Pocket pistols must be .31 caliber or larger. Model "P" Colts and clones and revolvers with swing out cylinders are specifically not allowed regardless of
caliber, frame size, or barrel length. Pocket pistols may not be used as or converted to main match revolvers.
A Derringer is defined as an external hammer, fixed sight, breech loading or percussion
ignition, small frame pre-1900 design firearm having one to four barrels up to three and one-half inches long. Derringers must be .22 caliber or larger. The Remington style over/under barrel configuration and the Sharps four-barreled Pepperbox are typical SASS–legal Derringers.
    - .22 Magnum ammunition is not allowed
  3. On the American Derringer, you put the safety on when loading. This prevents the hammer from touching either firing pin.

I think if you contact the folks at AD, they will maybe ship to your dealer.

Oh yeah! I forgot it has a safety. The safety automatically disengages when the hammer is pulled isn't that right? I might actually use that one then. I've only ever used safeties while hunting or my 1911 when carrying it.

My LGS will contact them. I'll call them tomorrow and see what I can find out as well.

  4. Wouldn't that cost only cover the primer? Do you make your own bullets and powder?

I cast my own bullets, I have a couple hundred pounds that I've collected and melted down that didn't cost me anything. I use very little powder in my .38's. I just plugged in what the powder cost me and what I get for my primers and that's what it came up with.

  5. Yeah, I need to find the Youtube video again. They had a gun vise set up with the derringer in the grips. First shot was high and right about 4" from center the second barely hit the paper on the left. Still high. If I recall correctly, range was about 5-6 feet. I don't remember the brand of derringer but it was a very small one. They tested several different ones. Bond did well, Cobra did alright as well. I don't recall the other 3. I did not hear American Derringer on the list.

My LGS is looking for an American Derringer. I'm aware of the non-rebounding hammer. I'll be careful about it. Won't be carrying it anyways.

  6. A few years ago the Mosin Nagants were all the rage here. I think it was because a local store sold a few hundred of them at $70 a piece. I still have mine and love it. Surprisingly accurate and ugly enough that I don't worry about banging it up against something. A week or so later there was a gun show. There were at least a dozen dealers reselling the same rifles for $270 and one took a wire wheel to his and sold them one at a time as a "rare" stainless steel version. He was asking $500, I saw at least 5 of them leaving in other people's hands.

I got kicked out when I mentioned that I just bought 2 for $70 each and ended a sale. I laughed all the way outside.

  7. Every time you cock the hammer the firing pin moves from one barrel to the other. You could theoretically look at which firing pin is exposed and manipulate the hammer until you got it set to fire a particular barrel. It is not an over/under shotgun. One barrel isn't full and the other modified. It does not have a barrel selector switch. Out of curiosity what possible difference would it make which barrel fires first?

From the MANY reviews and articles I've been reading on many derringers, Bonds included, one barrel will shoot differently from the other. Some have said as much as a 12" difference at card table distances while using a mount. Being able to select barrels would grant me the ability to shoot the same way I practice. Shooting the barrels in sequence versus shooting whatever barrel hits first.

  8. Blackwater! That's what I'm talking about! I've put in a request to my local toy shop to see if they can find one for me. Made in Waco, Texas I see. That's just fine by me! I can certainly work up a load for that. I have dies for .45 I believe. I'm sure I can make that work.

Can you index the barrels? What I mean is, can you pick which barrel fires first?

  9. I guess Bond is the way to go. I was hoping there was something out there smaller and more in line with the old Remington double derringers similar to the Cobras but of better quality. So my options are Bond for something safe and reliable. Cobra for cheap, but small. I was thinking of something I could put a watch fob on and drop in my vest pocket. I'll take a look at the Bonds if I can find them. People around here tend to buy only the Craptical guns and so the stores ignore neat ones.

I'm not looking for concealed carry. I have guns for that and there are much better options out there than a two barreled single action inaccurate gun. This is strictly a fun gun.

  10. I'm looking at possibly getting a derringer for side matches and just for fun. I don't know anything about them other than they are small and only good at card table ranges. So I'm looking for suggestions on what to get. I'd like something like a .357/.38 or in .45 as I have reloading dies for those. I currently shoot .38s but I'd have little to no trouble working up a load for a .45. I'd like to stick to one of those calibers instead of a .25 or .32.

    What would y'all suggest?

    What should I look for?

  11. I'm a contractor and have done lots of ceilings. Here's the simple way if the popcorn hasn't been painted.

Get you a spray bottle, I use a garden sprayer. Fill with hot water.

Get a wide putty knife 6" or better and a smaller one for corners. Stiff works best.

You'll also need lots of drop cloths and old clothes and shoes you don't mind getting dirty.

Remove all furniture, cover everything with drop cloths.

Spray ceiling with hot water let soak for a minute then scrape. It should come off cleanly and easily. If not add more water.

    If it's been painted......good luck.

You should be able to scrape a bedroom sized ceiling in an hour or so depending on how many things are sticking out of it.

I have a 3' painters shield on a long handle and have been able to scrape a 20x15 ceiling in a few minutes only needing a ladder and a small knife for close in work.

  12. are you trying to buy fitted sheets? don't. buy flat sheets and learn to make the bed.

Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to have to do. I can find sheets but they're too expensive for my blood. I'm normally fine with a wool blanket, but other people don't seem to agree with me on that.

I found lots of sheets there that fit the outside dimensions but they are all for 18" tall mattresses not my 6 1/2".

    Camping World has them.

They're too expensive, and I'm too cheap.

You will probably want to invest in a mattress topper as well. I bought one of the memory foam style toppers to go in my camper. A little pricey, but your back will thank you especially on the longer trips.

My wife found our sheets online.

The man I got the camper off of bought a brand new mattress and put in it before letting me drive off. I think the new mattress is better than the one I normally sleep on. It's very comfortable, just short and thin. I may look into mattress toppers but don't those make it warmer? I'm in Texas, I don't need a warmer bed. I can add blankets for warm.

Regular queen size work fine esp when you use one of the memory foam toppers.

    kR

Regular queen size bed is 6" longer than my mattress and considerably thicker.

How thick are mattress toppers? This is a truck camper where the bed is over the truck cab. I have a limited amount of head room in there as is.

A word to the wise: I have a RV I use going to the matches up here, in Canada.

In 2015, I took it to an October match, (no hook-ups), the temperature dropped overnight, froze the pipes and blew some connections.

In 2016, I winterized the water lines, brought some water containers and saved myself a lot of trouble.

If I were to take it in the winter that's what I'd do as well. Then again down here in Texas it doesn't get as cold as Canada does. Right now it's been drained and winterized. Come spring I'm going to clean out the water heater with vinegar and replace the anode (Suburban water heater), sanitize the entire water system, and try to completely clean out the holding tanks. I'll also replace the dump tube. I'm also thinking of replacing the shower head with something more efficient and powerful like the oxygenics shower head.

Here is an idea for using non-fitted sheets if you don't want to do hospital / military corners.

    http://m.wikihow.com/Make-a-Bed-Without-a-Fitted-Sheet?sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiCpYfK8KPRAhVBz2MKHUrhBA8Q9QEIDjAA

Thanks for that Pat Riot. I know how to do military corners. I just wanted to be lazy about it and get fitted sheets.

  13. So, I got an RV and I'm trying to get it ready for early spring or late winter camping. I'm trying to find sheets for the bed. I'm having trouble finding them. The mattress is a Short queen. It's 60x74 but only 6.5" tall. I can't find any sheets that are close to that, they're all too deep at 18+ inches. Y'all know where I can find some decent sheets that'll fit and won't break the bank?

    Thanks

  14. Titanium would be the preferred material, DO NOT GET TITANIUM COATED. Steel blades and titanium coated blades will need to be oiled and coated with silicone to keep them from rusting. On the coated blades the titanium will come off and hide rusting. Avoid them like the plague.

One with a flat pry-bar like tip is extremely helpful. I would also get one with serrations on the back and a line cutter. Some dive operations will not allow a spear pointed tip, but those are great to have when spear fishing. Having the ability to remove the handle is good as you can clean the blade a lot easier. Many have a metal pommel on the handle, these make great signaling device when tapped on the tank. They can be heard from far away underwater.

Long blades are better for spear fishing, but short blades can be mounted to the BC and are extremely handy. Also, bright colors are great if they are dropped.

  15. Sounds hinky to me too. Were I you, I'd be looking into another school. I'd also sit your wife and daughter down and tell them why you said no. Might want to have a stern word with that instructor. Maybe put the fear of "father with a gun" into him.

While there is the possibility that the instructor meant what he said, it's all to often that situations like this lead to horrible consequences. I wouldn't risk it.

  16. I've got two border collies. The first one is my male dog, Bo. He's a hoot. Smartest damn dog I've ever seen. When you look into his eyes you can just about see the wheels turning and him thinking. I've watched him look at the door and figure out how it works so that he can get in. He's the reason I have to keep my door locked when I'm home. He's also got a sense of humor and likes to play pranks on us. I got him in a silent auction at my church. He was donated as part of the fund raiser. He's been the best dog I've ever had.

My second one is my female, Bailey. She's a brat. I was about to leave for a shoot and stopped to say goodbye to Bo and saw a little border collie puppy in my back yard. She was wormy and needed help so I took her in. She's worthless. She's very smart but will only do things for you if there's something in it for her. She's sweet though and loves to cuddle up and be held. She's also a talker and we'll "argue" back and forth. It's hilarious.

  17. Forget LPG gennys-

Look HARD at Honda portable gennys.

If he has A/C you want 4K watts of power max.

Solor panels are VERY nice to have. I have 3 large ones on my Lance Camper.

    OLG

Thanks for the tip. The camper does have A/C, a nice refrigerator and a couple of nice other features. I went and picked it up today. It has a large compartment where the previous owner kept a portable genny. He also had it set up with solar. He took the panel off and put it on his other camper. I'm seriously thinking of putting a new solar panel on. I'd much rather use that than a generator with the exception of running the A/C just before bedtime in the summer.

  18. Take him to an RV store and just spend some time browsing with him.

That's my plan hopefully this weekend. We'll be passing near a Camping World so I'll see if I can talk him into browsing around. I was hoping that I could surprise him with something extremely useful and unexpected.

Royalties, bub. PM me for the mailing address.

    :P

Oh, dang...Would you look at that. The titles are different after all. Well, I guess you done missed out on the royalties. Sorry~

IF it is one of them that expand , lots of sealer

AIN'T never seen one that did not leak , some like a sive

No expansions is just slides into the bed of the truck. From what I understand the previous owner kept it inside a storage building. No leaks, no fading, and no fowling. I will check it for leaks before the next rain though.

If you're bucks up, an awning is one of the best additions.

For low buck items, a set of big spot mirrors is great gift or an inexpensive backup monitor.

I'll let him get the awning. He's picky and petty. If I were to pay for it and then it tear, he'd blame me for it.

Already got a great set of mirrors for it, but I'll look into a backup monitor. I think that'd be a great idea for him. Especially if I can get one that'd help him line up on his boat trailer.
