  1. I was at Cabela's in Tualatin Oregon a couple of times over the past 2 weeks and Loophole is right. Lots more powders and such. There was a nice selection of .22 and .22 WMR but none of the higher quality stuff in .22LR. Mostly oddly named plinking fodder and some CCI standard velocity.

I have shopped at many different Bass Pros and Cabela's. Each business has it's strong points. Bass Pro = Fishing, Cabela's = hunting and shooting. I really hope they both don't muck it all up with this merger. I love the Gun Library at Cabela's. In regards to Cabela's clothing versus Bass Pro's it's a draw. Camping and such, samey-same.

Since Bass Pro bought Cabela's, which I find to be odd - thought Cabela's would have bought BP, I truly hope the Gun Library stays put. It's my main attraction when I go to Cabela's.

  2.

Your welcome. It used to be a close race between Photobucket and ImageShack. Now Photobucket is beyond awful and I believe ImageShack to only be free for 30 days(I think old accounts may still be free). I have thought about creating a place for us cowboys to host images but haven't found the right software and am a bit hesitant because of security(Russian hacking and such).

I won't use Photobucket as I had some photos of mine a few years ago show up in advertisements from a company in Florida...Weird.

Thanks for all you do. It is appreciated.

  3. Chili Ron,

I would Google "best dive knives" and search Scuba sites for their recommendations and the pick a couple knives and do a search for reviews on them for forums discussing those knives. One Keyshaw knife in particular that is offered for sale as a "great buy" from a Scuba site actually gets terrible reviews on forums.

This might help but like I said, I am no diver. Just trying to help.

  4. Outrider Outlaw,

No offense to anyone here but if I were you I would contact a couple of different museums to see what they do to preserve leather like this. One wrong move and it could be lost. Perhaps museums specializing in the Civil Was era.

As an aside, I followed the well meaning advice of a man that told me how to preserve a very old leather knife sheath once. It didn't work and the leather broke down and the sheath became soft to the touch on the exterior but was brittle and it basically fell apart. Off the shelf leather restorer may not work for what you have or want to do.

Google "museum leather preservation" and perhaps contact some of the curators that your search brings up.

    Good Luck to you.

  5. I have a 686-6 that I love! Actually shot it yesterday at the range. Very accurate. I removed the rubber grips it came with and replaced them with a set from Altamont.

    Johnny Dollar,

How do you like those Altamont grips? I just bought some for one of my Vaqueros and I like them. I was thinking of getting a set similar to yours for my S&W model 19. It came with Pachmayr grips and the originals. I have the original grips on it now. Like the old Vaqueros, the grips bell at the base. I do not like that so I switched to Altamont "slim" grips. The ones you have on yours do not appear to be "belled" but appear consistently proportioned. Does the smooth front with the finger grooves give you a solid purchase on the grip?

    ;)

    Pale Wolf,

What grips do you have on yours? They also look like Altamonts.

    Thanks,

  6. Hey, Pat!

Once I am a little bit more mobile, we could meet up at a Canby monthly match (or elsewhere in the Valley) ... I have a representative mix of various types of shoulder/Huckleberry rigs you are welcome to try out.

    PWB

That would be a great help. Thanks very much. But more importantly, you worry about getting back on your feet and running and then we can do that. I am in no hurry.

    Best regards,

    PR

  7. Well, it looks like I have some research to do after looking over all of these suggestions. I have to say that the Diamond D Guides Choice set up looks most appealing overall but I need to look the others over to be sure. I will skip the Uncle Mike's rigs as they all appear to be made for scoped handguns and they do not look to be a long term use item. I have used Uncle Mike's products in the past and they are adequate but I want something that gives years of service. I also like the Simply Rugged, Ted Blocker, and the Ringler Leather options as well but I haven't ruled out Trailrider's suggestion either. Like I said. I have some research to do.

One thing I'd like to mention is I am no longer an in shape guy, shape as in "round" - Round is a shape. :P I have trimmed down quite a bit. I was 300 pounds a year and a half ago and I am now 205 and working towards 180 or so. Some rigs are good if your trim and others if you are "in shape". The Guide's Choice looks like it will work and it doesn't require attaching to a belt.

It's really too bad I can't try some of these on. That would tell the tale.

And leave it to Tennessee Stud to add some levity. Ya gotta love that guy.

Thank you all very much for your help. I do appreciate it.

  8. I have my Dads tags who was a Navy WWII vet. He was a Navy Aviation ordinanceman and was on a small airstrip on Russell Island in the Solomons. He was there from Jan. 10th 1943 till half way through '44 or so. I can post a photo of them later tonight if needed.

And for Pat Riot... my Dad was also a Shellback having crossed on the way to the Solomons. His signed certificate says something to the effect of crossing during a mission of war. Love the mermaids... I don't see HR fighting you on that! :)

I worked for the MTA in Los Angeles. HR there is, shall we say, "special"...

I became a Shell Back on my ship's return to the US after sitting in the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf during the "Iran Hostage Crisis"....or what we called "Gonzo Station".

I caught my ship in the Philippines after they had been there for a few months. When the Virginia left Norfolk to go to the IO There were about 30 Shell Backs and about 300 Wogs.

When I came across the Equator there were about 300 Shell Backs and 30 Pollywogs. Boy, did I get my rearend beat! It didn't help that on the day before there was a Shell Back meeting on the fantail and me and a few of my buddies threw tomatoes and what was left of the fresh eggs at all the Shell Backs from the O1 level...that and we stole about 100 of the shillelaghs that they had cut up from fire hoses and threw them over the side. Me and my buddies got real special treatment the next day...HAHAHAHA

  9. Wow, you all are way better than Google :DThank you.

I will look into these. I will have to wait until tonight because the "censors" at work won't let me access the sites...I am lucky I get away with coming here...nudge, nudge, wink, wink.. ;)

Trailrider, thank you for taking the time. I will think about what you said above. Maybe a good holster might work but I am leaning toward the chest rig. I know that I do not want to carry using my Cowboy rig(s). I like your point about the open bottomed holster.

This rig / holster set up would be for walking, riding the motorcycle and going off roading in my truck. I used to carry a short barreled .357 when out and about in NC but the .357 just ain't enough juice for some of the critters one may encounter here in the Northwest. I will not be horseback so the clippity clop, up and and down motion will not be bouncing the gun against my rib cage. I want to be able to draw the gun seated in my truck or on the bike with ease. Also, when I hunt I usually do not carry a back pack. I carry pack belt set up that restricts what I can have around my waist.

I will look at all your suggestions tonight when Big Brother isn't watching...

  10. I have been looking for a way to carry one of my Vaqueros while out hunting and motorcycling the back roads and trails. I thought about a shoulder rig or a cross-draw holster but I am nor sure that would work for me.

Has anyone ever tried one of those "chest" rigs for carrying a big revolver and if so, what rig and how did it work for you?

    Thank you,

    Pat Riot
