The LASC has an excellent article on lube ingredients: http://www.lasc.us/LubeIngredients.htm
In 1880 the US Army started using pure Japan wax as its lubricant. Not having that, I am going try a variation on that and use straight carnauba wax. I will see how it works. Part of the drive to find alternatives to the lubes listed here is that I shoot 1851 conversions with heeled 38 Colt cartridges. I need to find a workable BP lube that doesn't get soft below 100F. It is not a pretty picture when that happens.

Drop a plastic container, no clean up on aisle 3.

The practical problem with confiscation is the cost. Since one could argue confiscation is the taking of private property for public use, it would require just compensation. That cost would be in the neighborhood of $150 trillion. Yep, trillion. Figure 310 million guns with an average value of $450-$500. I said average, I know we all own firearms worth much more than that.

Fortifying wine was done to extend its life after bottling. Long transit time, particularly by sea is bad for wines. The addition of alcohol and/or sugar improved its transportability.
An Oloroso sherry will have undergone some oxidation in the barrel, thus its amber color. A year after opening it would be drinkable, but not enjoyable.
Tawny and ruby ports will keep for several weeks, some say months, after opening before the quality begins to noticeably decline.
Madeiras can last for years after opening, if properly stored - corked and in cool place.

As Marauder said, original 1897s were not puposefully bored for 2-3/4. It was more 2-5/8. 0.125" shorter. That said, 2-3/4 works fine in any 97.

The John Wayne attribution is all over the Internet.
"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend."
True, but brother Duke was a mason and, while I am sure he would love that one liner, taking credit from someone else wouldn't sit well with him.

The important thing to get your head around is that calculus is all about developing problem solving skills and learning techniques to make the solution easier. If you are just trying to get 'the math' then you always have difficulty. I would second having a looking the the Khan Academy videos. They are very good at helping visualize and understand the why of it.

A bottle neck allows increased propellant capacity in a shorter case. For single shot rifles, bottle necks weren't necessary unless you were adapting an older cartridge to a smaller caliber. Thus you have the .577/450 Martini as an adaptation of the .577 Snider. Then there is the .45-75 for the 1876 Winchester which had case length restrictions. It could handle the .40-60, .45-60, and .50-95 straight line cases, but the .45-70 was too long so it the .45-75 was developed.

Common mistake. Made it myself. Just went out and measured it. Yes, the length of the chamber is 2-1/2" when the barrel is removed. If you look at the receiver, you will see there is a lip. The shell rests on the lip, not directly on the barrel. That lip is ~0.20". The rim on a shotgun shell is between 0.05" and 0.07". Add them all together and you get 2-3/4".

"Life is hard, it's harder if you're stupid."
Often attributed to John Wayne, but nobody can say when or in what context.
“This life’s hard, but it’s harder if you’re stupid.” from The Friends of Eddie Coyle by George V. Higgins. Spoken by Steven Keats, playing Jackie Brown, in the movie.
BTW, it is not from Sands of Iwo Jima

Case capacity is going to vary by design and manufacture. Folded head cases hold more than solid head. The thickness of the solid head base and case walls will also affect it. While I haven't mic'ed any .38-40 cases the impression I am left with from casual examination is that they had a thicker case wall than my .44-40 cases.
As for the .40 caliber/38 grain story, please remember that the original designation of the cartridges were .44 WCF and .38 WCF. The "-40" designation came about when UMC started manufacturing cases. -
My doctor has never asked that question. Then again, he knows I do since he runs a lead test on me every other year.

The Social Security Administration is looking at updating their system to feed some benefit recipients who have representative payees into the NICS database. representative payees are assigned to someone who Social Security believes is unable to handle their own finances. There are about 8.2 million OASDI beneficiaries and SSI recipients, out of 58 million total, who have a representative payee. More than half of those are minors under 18 (about 4.5 million). Of the remaining 3.7 million, 770 thousand are disabled adults aged 18-49. Of the 54 million OASDI recipients 1.6 million have an RP. Of the 4.37 million SSI recipients, 1.3 million have an RP.
Representative payees are assigned to most (99.9%) of children under 18, legally incompetent adults, drug addicts, alcoholics, and anyone determined to be incapable of managing their funds.

I sponsor my kids, and sometimes they thank me for taking them shooting, sometimes they don't!
You should threaten to make them wear vests with you logo and URL on the back.

The Costco Kirkland Signature 6.0 hearing aids are made by ReSound and I am told they are similar to the LiNX 9 with the Tinnitus masking noise. At $1,800 for the PAIR, they are a very good deal. They have an app that allows they to be controlled from your smart phone. I have very bad hearing and they work well. The only drawback is that, as they are RIC, they can get clogged with ear wax, requiring a trip to Costco for them to clean it out. If you have a Costco hearing aid center near you, I would suggest you look into it.

My friend passed away recently and had been ill for a while. They thought they had everything lined up. His wife went to their credit union to inform them about the death. They told her should was supposed to inform them within 30 days. Second, they made her close the joint account and open a new one. Big pain, since all their billed were autopaid out of the old account. Since banks are regulated by the state they are located in, double check for your state.
I will need to check up on joint tenancy.

I run .44 Russian in my .44 Special 1866. Use the Cowboy Special carrier. Only caveat is that you do need to use a wood dowel, piece of antler, pencil, etc. to deep seat the last round you load, so it seats forward of the cartridge stop.

I can't imagine binge watching all the episodes.
I'm going to watch them as if they were weekly. Then I have something to anticipate as the Fall weather gets colder. I'm also not going to open any Longmire threads until I see the last episode lest people can't contain themselves and divulge too much info.

Then how did you read this thread?

Redwood I shoot the 38-40 (38WCF) . It is one of the original "73 cartridges ,after the 44-40. A lot of challenges to shoot , but no blow back when shooting Real BP . It is miss-named as it's a 40 cal. bullet and loaded with 38gr. of BP ( I can never get 38 gr. in my cases, the earlier cases were balloon shaped which I think that allowed them to hold more powder) .
The original balloon head .38 WCF cartridges did hold 40gr of BP under a 180 gr bullet.

Watched the last of season 4 last night. My wife is addicted to it. When they left us hanging, expecting season 5, my wife's comment was A$$H0les!

I agree 110% with your wife. There just ain't no reason for a cliff hanger ending.

Of course it was a political speech. I went back and read the transcript. My gestalt from doing so is that Bibi is calling for the US to deal with Iran the same way Israel treats the Palestinian Authority. Is it a better course than what the US is doing? For the purposes of the speech, it doesn't matter. What does matter is that if the current US approach is perceived to be better by enough Israelis, it is bad for Bibi's government.
There is an election coming up in Israel (March 17) and a growing "anyone but Bibi" movement. His Likud party has been falling in the polls. This speech was not about convincing the Administration to his point of view, it was about sowing divisiveness by alienating the Administration. By doing so he got standing ovations by the Republic majority in Congress and garnered support of the conservative media machine (FOX, Washington Times, etc). The headlines trumpeting him will act as an endorsement of his government and policies.
So, whether you agree with Netanyahu's message to Congress, or not, take what he said with a grain of salt.

As you can see from the responses, it is all a matter of taste. Just like Scotch or Bourbon. For my tastes, as a gift, I would go with a 21 year old from Appleton Estate, Don Q, El Dorado, or Mount Gay.

Here is a statement from Midway's online catalog: This conversion cylinder is for BLACK POWDER cartridges or black powder equivalent cartridges (also called Cowboy Ammunition) with lead bullets on a steel frame revolver ONLY. Attempting to use modern ammunition and/or installation on a brass frame will create a dangerous condition that can result in injury or death. Dry firing with the conversion installed will damage the firing pins.
Are you prepared to load BP cartridges? It's not hard just consider that this is a requirement.
The second part of the admonition is the important one - you can use smokeless, factory Cowboy Ammunition - light loaded, lead bullets. Magtech, Winchester, Goex, etc all make Cowboy ammo.

the article references straw man purchases. Recently SCOTUS refused to hear a civil case where 2 policemen sued a Milwaukee gun store - Badger Guns - leaving the verdict against the gun store standing. This was a case where it was apparently obvious it was straw purchase - the ultimate owner was present in the store at the time of the purchase and several days later shot 2 policemen.
