  1. The other thread got closed but here is a video showing the new Standard SAA. The part about the single action starts at about the 45 second mark. Very nice looking gun but it's target price is the same as a new Colt. Hope it succeeds but at that price point it is apt to go down the same path as the STI attempt to make single actions a couple of years ago.

P.S. The firing pin looks odd because the tip has been cut off. Guns shown at the Shot Show have to have their firing pins removed.

  2. The answer to your question regarding custom orders is that it has to be something not offered as a standard model. Currently those are only 45 and 357 in all three barrel lengths and both finishes. So in order to place a custom order, something else needs to be included like different caliber or custom barrel length, engraving, etc. as to why the don't make more, word is there just aren't enough smiths to build them and there's virtually no profit in it. I'm still shocked that they make them at all.

There are only two guys that work on the SAA at Colt. The issue isn't there are not enough smiths. The issue is there is not enough demand to have a full-time production line. Colt tried making a bunch of SAA's a few years ago and keeping an inventory so they would be available on dealer shelves. Heck the local Cabelas had them on the shelf. The problem is they sold very slowly so now they are only made to order. Pretty much everything comes out of the "custom" shop as there is really no such thing as a standard "production" model at this point. When they get enough orders they run off a batch. Think about it. They build about 1,000 per year. That is only about 80 per month or around 4 per work day. Four is about a minute's worth of production at Ruger.

  3. Without looking at the gun it is hard to tell. In all candor and not trying to be snide your friend needs to take it to someone that knows 73s. Five in a year is rediculous. If a "professional" installed the last one and it broke after two months he needs to find a new professional. You are in Louisiana. Are you close to Slick McClade?

  4. An update. A million thanks to Roger Rapid, and Yul Lose for taking the time to send me instructions to work on the rifle. I was actually amazed how easy it was to disassemble, and reassemble my Lightning.

It was FILTHY inside. Took me about an hour from start to finish. Well worth the effort. It feels like a completely different rifle. Really slick now, and my feed issue is gone. Trump was inaugurated, and I went shooting. A great dayy all around.

    Again, than you!!!

The .45 has a lot of blow-by. Now that you know how to take it apart you will be able to keep it clean and happy.

  5. 73 gates are different than 66 gates. They are much stronger. The loading gate in the photo looks like it should be reinforced before even using the gun. Doesn't matter how "strong" the metal is from the photo it appears the metal is so thin it is not going to hold up for competition shooting.

  6. Snail. The in-lines are a PITA to load. Takes longer to load one than it does to fire five stages. With snail cappers you dump in the caps and shake it and the caps turn over. Close the lid and you are ready to go. As noted above, they are just made out of brass sheet metal with a little steel finger. Might need a little adjusting once in a while but still a heck of lot more user friendly than the in-lines.

  7. I do not want to say the Smiths name. As he is highly respected in CAS. I'm just at a loss of what to do. I could try a different spring from someone else and see if it breaks. If not then something going on with the Smiths springs. If it breaks something in the gun is putting tremendous stress on the spring.

    EMN

Breaking a spring in a Colt is a once in a lifetime type thing if at all. Regular breakage means something is wrong. What to do? Real simple. Buy a Wolff or Lee's Gunsmithing spring and put one of those in and see if it breaks. They they break there is something radically wrong with your guns. If they do not break then you need a new smith.

  8. There reallly isn't that much inside. If you look at this diagram part 40 is the cartridge stop. It is a finger that pops un behind the cartriges to keep them from coming out of the magazine tube. When you pump to the rear a spring forces the finger up and it blocks the cartridges. When the pump is pushed forward the bolt pushes the finger down and a cartridge is released onto the carrier. Something is wrong with that finger. Might just need cleaning. Take it apart and inspect the insides. You did not mention what caliber you are shooting. If you just recently took the magazine tube out and it is a .357 did you put the mag tube reducer back in?

  9. Now that the Handi-Rifle is out of production they look like a viable replacement. I wonder if they will have an ejector? Didn't see any mention in the description. Shucks, I re-read the ad and it says extractor.

  10. To clarify, Joe Bowman was an top notch exhibition shooter. I don't recall how well he sang. He passed away several years ago.

    Jim Bowman did the song.

They were both at the Mulecamp shoot for several years.

    Both great guys!

Thanks for clarifying that. I didn't think it sounded llike Joe.

  11. Pretty Cool Larsen I like it, where did you find it?

It is one of those weird cyberspace things. I listen to music every night when I go to bed. This song came up a couple of weeks ago and I wondered how the heck it got on my IPod. I checked and it is on my ITunes song list. So it got downloaded from ITunes to my IPod. How it got there I am not sure. Must be something to do with the cloud or Russian hacking. At any rate, it is a nice tune and I thought you all might enjoy it.
