  1. The plunge in numbers has little to do wth the stages we shoot, target sizes or distances. In fact clubs that are doing well do exactly the opposite of what you recommend. The reduction in SASS numbers has a lot more to do with demographics of cowboy shooters, the largest percentages of shooters today are well over 60 years old and the sport no longer attracts younger shooters who were not raised in the era of TV and movie westerns.

    Yep spot on.....

  2. I think you'll find an empty 45/70 case fits over the big end of the primer follower rod. You can even put a lead slug inside if you really want extra weight.

    See ya at WR?

Howdy Mudflat..No winter Range this year..You still planning on moving?

Another thing I did was to make up a second follower rod. After the buzzer goes off with the original rod, I put in my homemade one which is longer and just short of the bottom of the plastic tip. I like to get all the primers out when done. Put in a hundred, get out a hundred. I found with the shorter stock rod the last 3-4 primers had no pressure on them and sometimes hung up. As soon as you move the lever the primer slide would catch on the partially dropped primer and ruin the plastic tip. Occasionally they would fall inside and get crushed--Bad news. I used a piece of plastic rod from a marking flag and a 38 cal bullet for my second rod. Haven't ruined a tip in a long time. Read on the Dillon forum once that some tips just don't last and others do, I think it's just the nature of a small mass manufactured plastic thin part. Also when adjusting the slide-- take the primer unit off the press and hold it in a small vise-- makes it way easy to see how the cup is lining up and the primers are dropping. The other adjustment for the shell plate end, need to be done on the press. I also now have two primer assemblies, 1 lrg. and 1 sm. so no more adjustment needed when going from 45 to 38, just switch primer assemblies when changing dies and shell plate, its only 3 more screws. Hope I've been some help.

  4. Get the part numbers you want from the Dillonwebsite and phone them, they'll send you the parts for free and some, or lemme know what you want and I'll get em for you.

Howdy Jack..Will see you Feb 4th..don't worry I had a shopping list !!

  5. Welcome JP

You & yours will have a ton of fun with the Cowboy family..not many of us in Australia [ approx. 900 ] but we have a ball !! ..Tripping around is fantastic & experiencing the different clubs,.shoots, meeting new people etc is wonderful & more so in the USA.

EOT is a blast , we hope to be back there in '019.

I think around 25 from Down Under attending this year.......

You will get a lot of offers to help ..because that's the way this family is.

  6. Thanks for the replies..very hard to get parts here in Aus although the maintenance kit is available.

Been playing around with it & yes the plastic end has gone out of shape but added a weight to the top of the rod & seems to work better.

  7. Howdy

I have a Square Deal, just starting to have a problem with the primer retaining pin & the fitting on the end of the primer magazine tube..both are plastic...is there an upgraded version out there ?

Don't really want to stay with the plastic if possible..thanks

  8. I got a SDQ on the first stage once, walked to the shooting line ready to go and timer says STOP! your rifle hammer is cocked, not chambered but yep it was cocked, And boy did I get mad at( ME! ) how stupid could I be I said, Learned and never happened again.

    Renegade Ripley

Yep nearly' done that a few times !!

  9. Your issue is not with powder coated bullets. It is with a crummy bullet caster. It's like painting a car. If you paint over dents the car is still going to be dented. Your heading makes it sound like the coating caused some sort of problem. That is apparently not so.

Yep what Larsen said, unfortunately some sellers coat crappy bullets because it does cover up faults !

  10. Howdy Dutch Bear

Yep still shoot smokeless but the BP is a close second, eventually all the time.Shooting a double cross draw so yes most times put both away with the L/hand...hope you have both been well ...Regards Mohawk

  11. Ain't technology great. Glad we have Grizz to help us.

Such fun to see Mohawk all the way in Aussie land.

    A real Crocodile Dundee type.

    Great shooting.

    What a BP blast!

Howdy Del Reo Pete..Thanks mate, yep that BP is a lotta' fun..I explain it as the 'BOOM is better than a bang !

  12. Powder coated bullets are very popular in Australia, probably around 90% use them, like them myself but as I have a magna-caster & with the time you put into it I am not prepared to spend extra time coating bullets....

  13. Nice run Mohawk. :) And now that you've been bit by the Darkside bug, I'm sure you'll find (just like I did) that smokeless just won't cut it any more! Nothin but real black for me for the last 6 years now.

And thanks Grizz for the help you provide to us 'technically challenged' cowfolk! :P

    Howdy Titus

That must be about the time [ 2011 ] when we met you at the Powder Creek Cowboy shoot..I too will end up shooting BP fulltime , just not yet.

All the best to you & Fannie....Mohawk
