  1. I don't know about the status of SASS becoming a non profit.

I lost track of that, along with the status of the pending law suit from local neighbors trying to shut down the range operations at founder's ranch.

  2. I like the flat housing. I have a super tuned (Clark Custom) Springfield 1911 and a WWII contract 1911 (Remington-made). The flat housing gives me a more comfortable, natural grip, without having to think too much about aim.

  3. I personally do not believe that a dues increase or the Chronicle being eliminated, then changed to a slick magazine (that in itself alienated many members), are some reasons for members' animosity. The way those things were implemented, managed and continue to be maintained, has created an intense lack of confidence and trust in many members that pretty much cannot be fixed.

Rabid, blind loyalty and snide remarks from certain members, directed at other members who complain and criticize, along with sloppy administration (such as the expired gift cards noted above), and disrespectful management statements like, "when all this blows over," have created rifts in members' trust that cannot be repaired. Some members leave and some stay, but the damage has been done and I believe the focus is no longer on legacy membership, but on newcomers, who don't know the history.

BY THE WAY, in my view, limiting Forums access to paid members would be a mistake for a host of reasons.

  4. Cat...thanks for the video and the info on Curtis...a nice start to the day...Thanks...Jim

Happy to offer up the video, Jim. I thought it was good, too.

Yes, there are other Internet examples of his singing in movies and in variety shows. In the John Wayne cavalry movies he often was portrayed as a member of the "Regimental Singers" with the Sons of the Pioneers. He sometimes provided comic relief, as in "The Searchers," playing the Charlie McCorry character, fighting Martin Pawley (Jeff Hunter) over Vera Miles......("Step over thet piece of fahrwood!"). :-)

  5. Have you watched the gunsmith "file" the springs? Perhaps his process is embrittling the spring or otherwise weakening it. Almost certainly, in fact. Snapping a main, or hammer spring in that manner is rare, I'd say. Carefully knocking off the 4 "sharp" edges with a file or belt sander (don't let the spring heat up!) should help spread the stress on the spring.

  6. For some reason... I've never felt comfortable in an Airbus.

Me, either! AirBus make a whiny noise that sounds to me like a turbine is going to blow. Although I know that the noise is normal, it makes me uncomfortable.

    And, that now reminds me.....

A few weeks after 911 I was back in the USA sitting next to this woman in her late 70's in First Class on an AirBus. The plane took off under full power with that whining noise going. She freaked out and tried to leave her seat to get off the airplane. I put my arms around her and gently calmed her and explained it was just a different airplane making different sounds. Then she was afraid that terrorists were on board and would crash the plane. Turns out her daughter or daughter-in-law was a commentator and author (Barbara Olson, I think?) killed on 911 on Flight 77 that hit the pentagon. This poor woman was flying alone and scared half to death. I left my seat and kept switching around with others who each sat a few minutes with her to keep her calm. One of the flight officers came out and sat with her a while, too. It was a long flight.

  7. Most of us remember Ken Curtis as Festus on the long-running "Gunsmoke" TV series. But prior to that he played many similar roles in memorable John Wayne movies ("Rio Grande," "The Searchers," etc.) and prior to that he joined the Tommy Dorsey big band group as a vocalist, taking Frank Sinatra's place when he left. He was married to John Ford's daughter.

Here he is singing "Tumbling Tumbleweeds."

  8. I met the girls from Charlie's Angels at the Fox Studios commissary. We talked for a bit as we ate lunch. Finally I said, "You ladies are better looking in person!" They all giggled and we talked for a while longer and I had to go. Also met the "Love Boat" crowd, the "Dukes of Hazard" people and others...all informally at lunch.

A year or so ago I met Cameron Diaz briefly in line at Starbucks in Brentwood (tony area of Santa Monica). I like her movies and I've watched all of them. I told her she does great work and please keep them coming. She lit up with that movie star smile. Wow. :-)
