  1. i was in when the army switched to 9mm though we went to Iraq with the 45 rattly as it was. the reason was NATO uses 9mm and at that time we envisioned a war with russia and wanted ease of logistics and the ability to have ammo if we picked up an allies weapon. the 1911s in our unit were rattly and worn out and not very accurate. all our officers carried that as did some higher up Bradley commanders and the tank units still carried it and the grease gun in 45 to Iraq.

  2. each time i see it i get puzzled. john wayne's son was kicked out of West Point for failing math and enlisted the next day into the army yet his father mentions him lying about his age to get it. how could he get into West Point and not be old enough for the army?

  3. around here you can renovate without permits, you can build for a $50 permit and no county inspector except for the tax assessor because they want to raise the tax revenue. i decided to totally back off of this one. the friend and her mom both insist she get the home regardless of price and inspection that may be done and its results. i keep telling them it does not help to overpay. thankfully she can't qualify for the full amount. that may be what saves her. sadly though they want me to come up with the difference between the sale price and what she qualifies for. i predict disappointment for them.

i just finished renovating a home at the end of my driveway that was under foreclosure. it had 8 acres with it and i wanted to protect it. i knew it had termite and water damage but as we got in it it really got bad. i could have bought another small house for the cost of the repairs but i rent it out and in time hope to give it to one of my children. when i see water damage i start rethinking my purchase unless the seller is willing to work with me. if i run into a seller that will not budge in price nor make repairs i like to walk away.

  4. a friend wants to buy a house REALLY bad. its 2 doors down from her mama. when i looked at it per their request to get my opinion i noticed that even though the paint looked fairly good, there was a dark wet spot on the master closet just off the bathroom. it looked older than the paint. i suspect a leak behind that wall and possibly mold since it is always humid here in south Georgia. i asked the agent to find out about the stain but the seller had rented it out and then replaced the floors and did not have an answer about the stain and refused to determine if it was mold or make any repairs and wants full asking price which the mortgage company said is about 10000 too high. the friends mom says mold can't grow on a slab but i say it can. they seem to want the house regardless of price or repairs that might be needed. can mold grow on a slab?

  5. i like that one. my dad always treated me like a new recruit since he was a drill sergeant before going to vietnam. he said in his day he would kick recruits for falling behind. he taught me manual of arms, he would inspect my room ad pull down everything in my closet if one pair of pants was hung wrong. sometimes he would bounce a quarter off my bed then have me remake it for failing. he had me scared of basic by the time i got there yet i never got kicked, never failed an inspection for my bunk or locker, it was better than home.

  6. i know that phrase sounds harsh but he claims he wants to be a sniper and professional fisherman so I'm trying to show him an office job is better. being an infantryman myself i try to show him what those lifestyles really mean and how tough you have to be. my dad did me the same way and by the time i got to basic it was a cakewalk.

  7. i do sometimes actually hunt but my son usually tires of the walking. since then i figured out their pattern and even if we miss one, i know where they are going and often get there before them and try again. every morning a few does cross the power line at the bottom end of my property into the woods. about that same time a few others come down parallel to the power line in the woods and cross an open field where my stand is and a feeder is nearby ( i put the feeder near their trail) . they cross paths with the first few deers came earlier or near anyways. they all then go through a neighbors woods. in the evening they come back plus doe that were at another neighbors come toward my stand . I sat near their path once and popped a buck from 150 yards with a russian Mosin Nagant sniper rifle heading to where i since placed my feeder. sometimes i see a few does taking the same path the buck did, all head toward the stand i put up then turn into the woods to head south for the night. a few bed down near a garden spot i use on the north end. there are some bigger bucks that we need to work on near a creek on the northwest end that we have left alone for the most part but we plan on expanding next year. i want to put cameras up to figure out their path and times. we were just going to easier hunts to lee them interested,

i told my son about adding bird feed to the corn and he loved the idea and right away realized it would draw in predators. we saw coyote poop near the deer feeder a week ago.

  8. i like the bird feed idea. the 11 year old is the one who loves to hunt and fish, just loves fishing more. he just is discouraged this year because i got one early and last year he got one early. he still complains he wanted to get the one i got. since he did not get one right off like he wanted he lacks patience. part of the problem is this winter has been more like fall with 70-80 degrees in november and december. the last two days of the season we finally have weather cold enough to get the deer moving to get warm.

  9. took my 7 year old hunting late yesterday but he grew tired after 20 minutes. i think he really just wanted to go shooting. took my 11 year old this afternoon. it is colder and going to be really cold tonight and rained hard last night and this morning so i figure they will be moving . after 30 minutes he grew tired. kept telling him as it gets close to sundown they come from straight in front of you and off to my left. he did not believe me, said he wanted to go home, they were not coming. so i took him home. went to the cabin to make sure it was ready for a real cold night and walked past the power line and saw 3 does. if only he had stayed out there.

i told him i was trying to make men out of him and his brother but not getting cooperation. seems they don't like the cold. i love hunting when it is cold. i prefer it. no bugs etc.

  10. i watched the John Wayne Alamo movie again this week and the movie really paints him as an arrogant jerk for starters. in the movie Bowie wants to cut and run which in handset would make more sense that defending a short walled mission. the movie also paints bowie as indecisive and crocket as along for the ride. for years i enjoyed that movie., i don't know why i suddenly decided to evaluate it in detail

  11. i woke her up early today and asked her if she wanted to go hunting and with her eyes still closed she nodded yes vigorously. we went and got in the stand. I noticed she is getting more confident getting up there. her hands got cold so i got to hold them with one hand to keep them warm. she rested her head on my arm. still noticed no deer around. i started coughing so i pulled out a candy cane and split it with her and she got excited about that. after 25 minutes she wanted to go home. i told her my coughing scared them away . yesterday she cried it was her fault they had not come despite my telling her it was just the wrong time of day. she told her mama it was me this time. :)

  12. I've taken her twice this year. my stand is only as far off the ground so that my hand can touch the seat when raised as with children i want them close to the ground. she is still timid of the height but will get up there. she likes to sit with me and watch. each time soon as we get settled she says, "i don't see any deer". i tell her to wait. she likes to pick leaves off nearby limbs and put them in front of hers or my face as camouflage she says. to get there we have to ride the 4 wheeler as she does not want to walk that far. after 30 minutes she is ready to go home and then cries we did not see any deer. but she often puts her arm around me while in the stand which feels nice. told her maybe we can go earlier in the day at sunrise and see one. said she sans to so we might try tomorrow if the rain is not here. glad to have a place to take her and the other 3.
