Buffalo Creek Law Dog

A few years back we were visiting our sister-in-law for a couple of days. I was laying on my stomach on the floor reading the paper when her cat walked up and peed in my face. Everyone, except one person thought it was funny as Hell.

In the 1880's the stagecoach from Edmonton to Calgary (200 miles) left Edmonton on a Monday and arrived Calgary on Thursday weather permitting, stopping over night. and for meals enroute. The run was on bald prairie. It works out to 50 miles per day.

A Chinook coming through, our temp is jumping up to +32 F. However the Chinook winds will be gusting to 55 mph.

Back about 1990 just a little NW of Calgary, there was an old grave on a ranch. It was the grave of a Confederate Civil War Veteran who migrated to Canada after the war. The Govt. wanted to have it moved to a cemetery. Because it was a Civil War veteran, it made the news. For the reburial, a Confederate reenactment group came up from the U.S. to act as pall bearers and firing party.

It was the number that were born in the 1950's that got me intrigued.

Looking through the Cowboy Memorial Pages, I noticed that a lot of these pards were born not only before me but, well before me. So, being retired, a little bored and a -32 windchill outside, i decided to do some ciphering. There were 172 entries that gave both a birth date and a death date. I'm 74 and out of the 172, 159 were younger than me. I then began to wonder what the average age of the 172 pards were so, I subtracted the birth year from the death year and the average age of the 172 came out to 63 years of age +/- 1 year depending on the birth and death month of each person in a given year. Certainly not scientific but, it indicates that the majority passed on well before their life expectancy age. which I believe is somewhere in the mid to high 70's. Interesting May they all rest in peace.

Good one Bob. One thing that I notice is the lack of Chuck wagon races in the U.S. At least we don't see them competing at any of our rodeos or the Calgary Stampede. Wagon races are the Stampedes 's premier event. It used to be 4 wagons, each with 4 outriders per race, for a total of 4 wagons and 32 horses on the track however, for safety reasons, they reduced the outriders to 2 for each wagon. Nothing like being down at the rail when they went flying by, getting hit with dirt clods and and horse turds flying in every direction.

Had some outstanding American cowboys win the $100,000 event prizes at the Calgary Stampede. It gets the odd Brit and Australian cowboys as well.

We have the CFR held in Edmonton during early November, to determine which Canadians will be competing in the WNFR. in December.
