  1. I've done that, too. But found it boring. I learned square and round dance in my teens, added simple ballroom and folk in my early 20s. Mid-20s into my 30s did Renaissance dance and was learning English and Scottish Country Dance. None of that is particularly fancy. OK. Maybe a pavane is fancy. But a galliard (sp?) while wearing armor isn't fancy in the least.
  2. Pineapple and mince pickled jalapeños on vanilla ice cream is tasty. Odd, but tasty.
  3. "The pilot project is called Project Nexus as a nod to the water-energy nexus paradigm gaining attention among public utilities. Utilities are increasingly recognizing the symbiotic relationship between water management and energy management, and are finding ways to design projects and actions that benefit the management of both resources beyond what has been done historically." They left out "free range" and " gluten free." " Solar AquaGrid – Bay Area development firm Solar AquaGrid serves as program manager for Project Nexus. Solar AquaGrid originated the pilot project after first commissioning the UC Merced Study in 2015, and is facilitating collaboration among TID and the various parties to bring Project Nexus to fruition." Now, what financial ties does Solar AquaGrid have to which political figures in Sacramento? "Solar panels on water canals seem like a no-brainer. So why aren’t they widespread? Back in 2015, California’s dry earth was crunching under a fourth year of drought. Then-Governor Jerry Brown…" It's a "no brainer" because you have to have NO BRAINS to try it! Mr. Washington foresaw this breed of idjit, and saw it in a different context in his own time. "My experience is that people who call themselves "The Intellectuals" understand theories, but they do not understand things. I have long been convinced that, if these men could have gone into the South and taken up and become interested in some practical work which would have brought them in touch with people and things, the whole world would have looked very different to them. Bad as conditions might have seemed at first, when they saw that actual progress was being made, they would have taken a more hopeful view of the situation." Booker T. Washington
  4. If the music isn't playing we would walk out to the dance floor. If the music had started we would walk out, holding hands, well, my right hand offered palm up and held at a comfortable level for her, she resting her hand on mine, and walking to the music...step, together, step, or glide...glide...step,step.... There I would face the line of dance, and use a gentle pull to roll her in front of me, checking her with my left hand joining her right, as my right hand slid to her waist. Sometimes, if the music was right, rather than that standard position I'd raise her hand, twirl her, slide my right hand across her back to her right hand, check her spin by taking her left hand in my left, and drop into the varsovienne position with both of us facing line of dance.
  5. "The UC Merced study..." That right there is the problem...it was a UC study. I vaguely recall a proposal back in the '70s to cover the water system, not with solar panels, but just cover it to cut down on evaporation. After being studied to death it was determined that the cost of installation and upkeep was prohibitive.
  6. I like a flashlight (torch for those of you in Commonwealth nations) that turns on with one click and turn off with one click. Years ago I got a 4 pack of cheap plastic flashlights, heck, might have been the "Free with any purchase" from Harbor Freight. Maybe about 3 inches long, an inch in diameter. Run on 3 triple A batteries...or is it 4. Small enough that if I need two hands I can hold it in my mouth. I've never needed the gollywog brighter-than-the-Sun $99.99, uses 18 D battery jobs. I have a light I found, one of the headband jobs, pivots one way, had the high beam, low, beam, and strobe. I use it to see into the back corner of the closet. I think the purpose of the low beam is so that if you are working in a small space and up close you don't get blinded by the 20,000,000 candle power main. I've seen guys on bikes with a strobing headlamp like that. So maybe the idea of the strobe is that if you are out walking in the dark along an unlit roadway the strobe will catch the attention of drivers and you are less likely to be hit while out walking in your all black clothing, in the dark, along an unlit roadway.

  10. Found on FB. True? I don't know, nor do I care. It's a good Prayer. The Prayer of the Paratrooper, from WW2 (Translation by Robert Petersen) I'm asking You God, to give me what You have left. Give me those things which others never ask of You. I don't ask You for rest, or tranquility. Not that of the spirit, the body, or the mind. I don't ask You for wealth, or success, or even health. All those things are asked of You so much Lord, that you can't have any left to give. Give me instead Lord what You have left. Give me what others don't want. I want uncertainty and doubt. I want torment and battle. And I ask that You give them to me now and forever Lord,so I can be sure to always have them, because I won't always have the strength to ask again. But give me also the courage, the energy, and the spirit to face them. I ask You these things Lord, because I can't ask them of myself(*). (*) The French text says rather: For only You can grant What can come only from myself.

  13. One for the math fans … There were three kingdoms, each bordering on the same lake. For centuries these kingdoms had fought over an island in the middle of that lake. One day, they decided to have it out, once and for all. The first kingdom was quite rich, and sent an army of 25 knights, each with three squires. The night before the battle, the knights jousted and cavorted as their squires polished armor, cooked food, and sharpened weapons. The second kingdom was not so wealthy, and sent only 10 knights, each with two squires. The night before the battle, the knights cavorted and sharpened their weapons as the squires polished armor and prepared dinner. The third kingdom was very poor, and only sent one elderly knght with his sole squire. The night before the battle, the knight sharpened his weapon while the squire, using a noosed rope, slung a pot high over the fire to cook while he prepared the knight’s armor. The next day the battle began. All the knights of the first two kingdoms had cavorted a bit too much (one should never cavort while sharpening weapons and jousting) and could not fight. The squire of the third kingdom could not rouse the elderly knight in time for combat. So, in the absence of the knights, the squires fought. The battle raged well into the late hours but, when the dust finally settled, a solitary figure limped from the carnage. The lone squire from the third kingdom dragged himself away, beaten, bloodied, but victorious. And it just goes to prove, the squire of the high pot and noose is equal to the sum of the squires of the other two sides.
