  1. Ever notice that the women who scream loudest about the mythical "pay gap" don't beat down the doors to get into jobs like this?
  2. From the front lines here in California I see the NRA as almost useless. It lets groups like Cal Rifle and Pistol Association, Second Amendment Foundation, et al. do the heavy lifting in the fight for civil rights, then step in at the last second, contributing almost nothing. It seems to me that the NRA only "fights for gun rights (a term I hate, the 2nd is about CIVIL rights, just like the 1st)" in places where no "fight" is needed, where anti-Bill of Rights bills will be defeated anyway. Then spend millions on back patting fund raising, "See how great we are? We defeated this! Now send us more money!" I'd have to check to be sure, but I don't think the NRA even bothered to file an amicus in the last couple of high profile cases here.
  3. A fine and underappreciated actress. She really was at her best in "The Court Jester," in my opinion
  4. God bless their brave, dedicated, and thoroughly insane souls. May Sts. Michael, Barbara, and Florian watch over them and intercede for them.
  5. I'm going to "a Special Hell" (see Firefly for reference) because while that's just WRONG in so many ways, it's also really funny! As to the the Three Holy Youths (actual general name of the icon). Hymns Troparion (Tone 2) Great are the accomplishments of faith, for the Three Holy Youths rejoiced in the fountain of flames as though in the waters of rest; and the prophet Daniel appeared, a shepherd to the lions as though they were sheep. So by their prayers, O Christ God, save our souls! Kontakion (Tone 6) You did not worship the graven image, O thrice-blessed ones, but armed with the immaterial Essence of God, you were glorified in a trial by fire. From the midst of unbearable flames you called on God, crying: Hasten, O compassionate One! Speedily come to our aid, for You are merciful and able to do as You will.

  7. Yesterday, I had a flat tire on the interstate. So I ease my car over to the shoulder of the road, carefully get out of the car, and open the trunk. I took out 2 cardboard men, unfolded them, and stood them at the rear of my car, facing oncoming traffic. They look so lifelike you wouldn't believe it! They are in trench coats, exposing their nude bodies and private parts to the approaching drivers. But to my surprise, cars start slowing down, looking at my lifelike men. And, of course, traffic starts backing up. Everybody is tooting their horns and waving like crazy. It wasn't long before a state trooper pulled up behind me. He gets out of his car and starts walking towards me. I could tell he was not a happy camper! 'What's going on here?' 'My car has a flat tire,' I said calmly. 'Well, what the hell are those obscene cardboard men doing here by the road?' I couldn't believe that he didn't know. So I told him, 'Helloooooo, those are my emergency flashers! "
  8. 1918 dazzle camo experiment with Sopwith Camels to trick enemy pilots into giving too little “lead” when aiming. The spiral patterned wheel covers also help spoil pilots’ aim, having vanes that spin the two wheels in opposite directions. https://planehistoria.com/sopwith-camel/

  15. In the name of Christ, stop! On January 1 in 404 A.D., an angry Roman gladiator stabbed to death the monk Telemachus because he tried to stop a brutal gladiatorial duel. The martyrdom of Telemachus led to Emperor Honorius declaring an end to the duels. Here is a brief account of what happened: "It was at a time of a festival in Rome. They were celebrating a triumph over the Goths. And he followed a crowd into the Colosseum, and then there in the midst of this great crowd, he saw the gladiators come forth, stand before the Emperor, and say, 'We who are about to die salute you.' And he realized they were going to fight to the death for the entertainment of the crowds. And he cried out, 'In the name of Christ, stop!' And his voice was lost in the tumult there in the great Colosseum. "And as the games began, he made his way down through the crowd and climbed over the wall and dropped to the floor of the arena. Suddenly the crowds saw this scrawny little figure making his way out to the gladiators and saying, over and over again, 'In the name of Christ, stop.' And they thought it was part of the entertainment, and at first they were amused. But then, when they realized it wasn't, they grew belligerent and angry. And as he was pleading with the gladiators, 'In the name of Christ, stop!' one of them plunged his sword into his body. And as he fell to the sand of the arena in death, his last words were, 'In the name of Christ, stop!' "And suddenly, a strange thing happened. The gladiators stood looking at this tiny form lying in the sand. A silence fell over the Colosseum. And then, someplace up in the upper tiers, an individual made his way to an exit and left, and others began to follow. And in the dead silence, everyone left the Colosseum. That was the last battle to the death between gladiators in the Roman Colosseum. Never again did men kill each other for the entertainment of the crowd." One tiny voice that could hardly be heard above the tumult. 'In the name of Christ, stop!' It is something we could be saying to each other throughout the world today.

A 1722 report describes construction of the presidio on top of the ruins of French settlement and what the Spanish found as they excavated fortification trenches.

  20. Thanks, You saved me the trouble of trying to find out what they are. I'll stick with Λουκουμάδες or even just plain doughnut holes.
  21. My pleasure. I rather like the twist on the plot of "Goodbye Mr. Chips."
