I have experimented with several approaches. In all cases so far, the effect can only be seen by spectators and not by the shooter.
The best I have ever seen was several years ago when a shooter fired a BP shotgun shot that sounded underloaded. When the smoke cleared a tiny black thong was hanging on a shot gun target.
Querida Kate has ben known to fire paper streamers and/or feathers.

Was standing about 5 yards off to the side, totally distracted, when the 105 howitzer received a fire mission. I don't ever want to do that again.
Try that with an 8". That's why I say "WHAT?" a lot.

I don't need prescription to see the sights but I do need help in capping my ROAs. Walmart is now selling wraparound safety glasses with a bifocal cut in them. I get the 3 power ones and they work well for me. Cheap too!

We were having dog problems a few years back. My father asked me to bring my "deer rifle", a 742 carbine in 30-06, in so he could shoot a dog that was really becoming a serious problem. I did. I showed him how to load, chamber and where the safety was.
He shot the dog. He was sitting in the drivers seat of his pickup with the windows rolled down and shot the dog out of the passenger window. The whole gun was inside of the truck when it went off. It took him over a week to get most of his hearing back.

My Marlin is chambered in 41 mag. I'd use it for anything up to moose and the big bears. Unfortunately, a heavy bullet (260 gr hard cast WFP) with a whole lot of W296 hurts me almost as much as what I'm shooting at.

I was shooting 41 Mag Rugers at a match when I heard a godawful explosion behind me. I jerked around and saw an 1858 Remington sticking out of a cloud of smoke. I haven't shot a smokeless round since.

I've had the palm cap that was hot enough that I had to pull the cap and a sizeable chunk of skin to get it off.

The VA supplies mine.
They are the PHONAK brand.
The body of the hearing aid is behind my ear with the molded ear piece inside, as close to my ear drum as possible.
I'm not only hindered by most frequencies & decibels but also word recognition. Even when my volume is up high, over 60% of words I hear sound garbled.

I also use the VA provided Phonak aids. I now remove the right aid to talk on the telephone. I have never gotten any aid that works with a cell phone.
Widder you may need a visit to the VA mechanics. Mine work well thru all ranges. When mine get wonkey, I go to see the lady mechanic and she makes them sing again.
As with all types, a room with high back ground noise is impossible.

To cause a malfunction the loading gate tab does not even have to break off. If they bend rearwards just a bit the .38 rounds will jump the tab and wind up in the action.
AS will, in spades, the 32-20.
When I get a new one I dip it in acetone, apply a small amount(just a lumpump) of JB Weld behind the tab, streamline it a bit, let dry and install. My 44-40 has been running several years with a reinforced tab.

I have had problems with a small caliber 66 with the cases actually going around the tab. Needed constant tweaking to keep the tab in the right place up and down in the loading gate. One of the 66 weak points.
