  1. And your ears haven't been seriously affected by shooting? Or do you have electronic assistance for tuning?

Nope, ears are fine. I do use a electronic tuner for the first note only (A=440) and tune by ear from there. Guess I'm lucky! ;)

  2. I don't see any reason to add that. We all know his history pretty well. I repected him as a brave American fighting man and a pioneer and will lower my flag to half staff in his honor.

    :(

I respectfully disagree Bob, I also honor his service to our country but all Seamus and I was pointing out was that as Ohio residents we had to put up with his dismal anti-gun votes. He was a liberal who fought conservatives tooth and nail. It was a real PITA to have him as a senator! I wish his family the best.

    RIP Mr. Glenn :FlagAm:

  3.

Rye, nothing like fishing in the snow.

Try it, you will like it. :)

Some of those big steelhead they catch in Ohio are just the ticket.

I can barely get out of my driveway!!!! The side streets are almost impassable and the main roads not much better. I'm only a mile from Lake Erie I guess I could walk up there…….NOT!!!!

  4. 17" here in Northeast Ohio, (Euclid) we got hit the last two days just along the lakeshore communities. 10 miles south or 10 miles west there's NOTHING but a dusting!

17" is a little too much, don't ya think???

  5. Rye, how did you become a piano tuner as a profession? Just curious.

I was a drummer, played in all kinds of bands, gave private lessons and owned a music store for awhile. I thought piano tuning would be a nice little sideline part time to get into. At my music store I did some minor repair on clarinets, flutes, guitars, etc. I got into it and lo and behold after a year of study with an old master, I hooked up with a piano store and within 2 years I was making a decent living just tuning and repairing pianos. I'm now semi-retired and still tune, it's a great way to make a living! I am not a concert pianist but I can read music and hack out some tunes. These days I mess with guitar more than anything, love them old "cowboy tunes"!!

  6. Howdy,

Local store just got in stinkers for 6.49 (50box) or so. They were 8 plus just a couple months ago.

The prices are coming down and once him is no longer prez, I predict gun and ammo prices FALL.

Local stores even have stuff on sail, xcept fer .22 ocourse.

Just buy what you need today.

Don't stock up but shoot em an half fun.

    Best

    CR

Stinkers???? Is that a new round? :P

  7. Considering the Pianos were invented a little over 400 years ago, 300 has got to be pretty rare

The piano/forte was invented in 1703 in Florence Italy by Bartolomeo Cristafori. That would be a little over 300 years NOT 400!!

It was called Piano/Forte because of the hammer hitting the strings instead of plucking the strings like a harpsichord. Hence it could be played soft or loud! (piano/forte) unlike the harpsichord which has one volume.

  8. Very nice Rye!

Would tuning one that old make you nervous?

The only thing I would be afraid of is if any action parts broke. Parts are not readily available and hard to get. I would do it though, I think it would be neat!! ;)

  9. If you notice also how long it is. Steinway is the one that came up with "over stringing", where the bass strings go over the other strings and lean to the right making the piano shorter and wider and therefore getting the same sound as the long cabinet.

Steinway is brilliant, the best!! All the major innovations in the piano design over the years have been by Steinway! ;)

  10. All that said and I commend him for his service to our country, BUT, he was an anti-gun Ohio senator who consistently voted against our second amendment. He was a terrible senator. I'm a lifelong Ohio voter and have written him letters about the gun issue a few times. He wrote me back and voted FOR the assault weapons ban because he said "criminals should not have AUTOMATIC weapons. This was right after the famous bank robbery in California where the criminals had full autos. Guess he didn't know the difference between FULL and SEMI-AUTO even though he said he was a lifelong gun owner and served in the military.

  11. Very nice! I noticed that it seemed to be somewhat short of the traditional 88. I guess that is a more modern thing.

    Blackfoot :)

Very observant of you!!! The original pianos all had 85 keys. It was sometime in the late 1800's or early 1900's when they went to 88 keys. ;)

  12. For his time as a Marine pilot and one of our country's pioneering astronauts, he had my respect and admiration as he so deserved. I remember gathering around the radio that one of my grade school teachers brought so we could listen to the launch. We all cheered as the world wished him "Godspeed John Glenn". As a politician he was elected Senator from the state of Ohio largely as result of that hero status. As a lifelong voting citizen of that state I had no use for him and little respect for him as that politician. He was an anti gun liberal who voted time and time again to take away our gun rights. He never even once earned my vote.

I'm glad you said that Seamus, I once wrote him a letter urging him to vote against the assault weapon ban back sometime in the 90's and he wrote back saying that the recent events in California where the criminals outgunned the police with AUTOMATIC WEAPONS, proved that there's no room for assault rifles on the street!!! He told me he was a second amendment supporter and grew up around guns. Yea, right so he didn't know the difference between a FULL AUTO and a SEMI Auto??? I wrote him back and then never heard from him again. Seamus is right, as a politician he was a useless liberal voting strictly party line. Terrible senator!

I do however, commend his service to our country and may he rest in peace.

  13. How about my Dad's name….Severio….he wound up being Sam here in the USA. He came here from Italy when he was 10 yrs. old.

My mother's name was VIRGILLIA…she was born on Christmas eve (Virgin Mary) The teachers insisted on calling her Virginia!!!
