  1.  i have a number of those and might still have a slide rule around here somewhere

I have a few slide rules too.  The one at the top I used in the Navy's Nuclear Power School. It has I think 24 scales and by the time I was done I could use 22 of them. Now I can maybe multiply and divide with it. image.thumb.jpeg.a09a999c3a947d67efeecfcad37a082c.jpeg

  2. When I started reloading my mother taught me how to read a micrometer. She had worked in a plant that made surgical wire during the war (WW2). I later went to a Tech School for machine shop and took a course in Precision Measuring Instruments. While I was in school, I worked nights at a machine shop. Later yet I went into the Navy and went to Machinist Mate "A" school and one part was precision instruments. I breezed through what we had to measure and when I took the problems to the instructor, he said that I needed work on my measurements. Most of the guys were using the micrometers like they were calibrated C clamps. I asked the instructor when the last time his instruments were calibrated. I got no answer.

  3. Hammer to shape. File to fit. Paint to match.

I would do what I was taught to do for body work. Hammer and dolly what I could, mig weld body filler then paint

    Those sound right

Mig weld or lead like in the old days. Lead seems to be a dying art.

  4. Some of that reminds me of my stepfather. He was only a Senior Chief Petty Officer but sounds like something he would have said. He could be very funny.

When I graduated boot camp my parents came up to Great Lakes for the occasion. I had been company honor man and after we were going to some shindig (publicity) and I was walking with my company commander my parents and some Lt.. My stepfather mentioned to the Lt. that he was a retired Navy Chief, the Lt. asked what his job was and he replied "His job was giving Lt.s a hard time". The look on the Lt.'s face was priceless.

  5. I have a Marlin 336 about 1978 vintage that needs stock refinish. Any suggestions on finish remover that can be used inside this time of year in Maine (cold outside) and does not raise the grain much? I was thinking on replacing with tung oil.

    Answer here or PM.

  6. Retired in July 2016 age 63 & 8 months. It has been good so far??? I could have retired at 56 but as I told people at work it is not killing me and I don't hate it yet. I still didn't hate it but there were some changes at work that made me think it was time to go.

  7. Can any one explain the uniforms that are in Utah Bob's link. I got out of the Navy 36 yrs ago and I never saw any like that. I know that sometimes there are changes but the guy in foreground has PO2 on his hat and the guy behind him has PO3 on his collar. Is this a new uniform or something from a really messed up Jr ROTC thing?
