  1. I'm at the age where anything that still works hurts.

Most mornings it's my lower back and right ankle. Within an hour the back pain goes away but the ankle can go on for days. My hands hurt when it's cold and my right thumb hurts almost all the time.

Like you, everyday brings a new misery, sometimes small, sometimes larger, but always something new.

Nobody said that getting old was easy. Old age is not for the weak or timid..... but still, there a lot of advantages.

  2. Me and the dog had an angus double burger with cheese, dill pickles, generic yellow mustard, and a slice of Burmuda onion, iced tea for me and water for the dog, and blackberry pie with vanilla ice cream.

I didn't feel like putting together a big meal.

  3. I used to be able to do that with a U S Rifle Caliber Thirty M-1 (Garand)... blindfolded... and in about the same time. The M-1 Carbine took twice as long and I needed my eyes to do it.

I still remember how but the speed is gone and I need both eyes now.

  4. Most of you know I'm in touch with my Scottish ancestry. In Scotland, New Year's is called "Hogmanay," which is a Gaelic word. Most Hogmanay celebrations are similar to ours, except that at midnight they practice "first footing." It means that after midnight, they go around visiting people, and the first person to cross their threshold (i.e. the first foot through the door) after midnight receives a gift from the homeowner.

Of course, real Scotch (which they just refer to as "whiskey," because Scotch is just whiskey made in Scotland) is key to all of this.

The Scots spell whisky without the 'e' in it.

  5. Mine were done in 2003, a week part.

I couldn't see red, a serious problem when half my appointments were at night. I still wear glasses to see anything inside 20 inches, but it's a marvelous change for 20/200 right, and 20/ 250 left, and cataracts to boot.

A side benefit is like an old detergent commercial: my "whites are whiter and my brights are brighter", and I see everything about 50% bigger.

The procedure has improved a lot over the years

  6. Gilbert Erector Sets would have been a fine training device for those.

Ah, the days of my youth when I built entire universes with erector, Lincoln and American Logs, bricks and other gadgetry, most with electric motors..... and nary a computer chip in the lot.

  7. Wouldn't it be wonderful... and hilariously refreshing... if someone like Steve Martin responded to these sorts of criticism with words like "My comments were made in tribute to a friend and fellow actor. I intended no offense to her nor to her memory, but if you will tell me exactly what I said that you found offensive I'll be happy to say those same words as often as I can."
