    Okinawa is often overlooked in favor of places like Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, and others, but...

     

    the longest single battle in our history (82 continuous days) was fought there...

     

    the first mass use of Kamikaze planes (and one of the last) was there...

     

    mass suicides of non-combatants, (because the Japanese told the Okinawan civilians that we would kill all the men, rape the women, and eat the children) happened there...

     

    Hacksaw Ridge, where the only Conscientious Objector to earn a Medal Of Honor, took place not far from where I was stationed...

     

    Item Pocket, a huge volcanic circular hole in the ground with caves and tunnels covering the entire inner surface, made in nearly impossible to take from the ground...but we did it...was where my supply operation was located...

     

    One old man called it "Hell's Holiday".  He was an Okinawan gent who saw it all happen.

    Okee dokee.  I've seen those all my life and never heard the name before.  Made them out of paper in grade school for hanging on the Christmas tree.

     

    Mine was red on one side and red on the other side.

    Oh, Hell!  Be realistic.  I still want to punch somebody's lights out once in awhile, usually when they are driving stupidly (if you can call what they are doing "driving"), or in a store or other public place without any idea that other people are there, too.

    I've seen that done in Utah.  What's fun is when your beagle chases them all over the yard, even after the cats have gone in the house to get warm.

     

    Beagles are very smart, but sometimes they are out of their league.  They just lock into "hunt and chase mode" and go until they drop or you succeed in getting their attention and call them home.

    Abilene Slim, my gunsmith buddy showed me how to make BP, it ain't hard. The only thing I lack is the 20 ton press to puck it, so mine is about 60% the strength of regular BP. Interestingly enough, toilet paper makes GREAT charcoal. I've even loaded 45 Colt cartridges with home made powder.

    I thought Big Lube molds were no longer around? I'd love to have one, but instead I use lubricated wads and such, seems to work pretty good so far. I also don't do it too much. This is the one I use, hard lubed with SPG.

    I'm just the new kid on the block, I know. Always up for better tips and tricks. 

    As if no one else was EVER "a new kid on the block"!  You'll outgrow it.

    We stopped on the way back from Utah.  Had been by there before but never stopped.  Inside was a group of people talking to Dale Evans.  One asked if her husband was around.  She said "He's out back playing Roy Rogers."

     

    I had a new light gray hat that they both autographed (it was stolen a year or so later at The Gunfight Behind The Jersey Lily... a hanging offense).  Very nice people and I shot with the Double R Bar Regulators for a number of years.

    Being retired has freed me in so many ways.

     

    I don't HAVE TO do anything.  No one can hire me, fire me, promote or demote me, chastise me, or tell me what to do.  I can look at a job and say "Okay, I have to do that, but it can wait until tomorrow...or  next week...or forever", or I can hire it done.  I can do it my way whether or not anyone else gives a damn.  

     

    I have dropped over 100 pounds in the last 28 months and still eat the same things I did before, just not as much or as often.

     

    I can make remarks to people when I want to, play with kids and dogs, dress like I'm used to and comfortable., and argue or not.  If I want something I can get it and if I don't like it I can get rid of it any way I desire.

     

    I have made some enemies and lost some friends over this but I'm still blessed by a huge herd of good people who stand by me.  I have told young ladies how pretty they are and get away with it because I'm not after their bodies.....and I am sincere.  I have explained to some people that they are NOT the most important people in the world..nor even in this conversation.  Some have challenged me, some have let it go, and one cried.

     

    Being retired lets me be me, unabashed, unrepentant, and uncaring of the results, happy most of the time, and grateful for such goodness in my life.

     

    Here I am.  Stop by and I'll make coffee or lunch.  If you need help I'll do what I can.  If you need  a shoulder, I still have two left.

    does the military still use the term AWOL?

    About the 30 days: when I became a Company Commander in 1967 I inherited an Apache jerk that had been AWOL for most of a year.

     I asked why he hadn't listed as a deserter I was told that the Army could not prove that he had left the island and they couldn't declare him a deserter.

     

    A year and short change later while I was in 'Nam the Army changed that ruling to what it is today.
