“Let’s slow down the fast shooters” slows down everyone else exponentially.

As I’m sure you know there are different types of difficulty. Small and far targets put a premium on accuracy. Big and close put a premium on running guns at speed with consistency. Track meets put a premium on fitness and youth, etc. etc. Different folks prefer different challenges. I like a mix, but if I’m going to get a steady diet of only one kind I’ll take big and close over small and far every time. The only type I’m not particularly patient with are the ‘let’s try something new’ folks who come up with bizarre stages because they think that will make middle of the pack shooters more competitive with top shooters when it actually only widens the gap.

I think it's fair to say that people want some degree of predictability in the matches they sign up for. I also think it's fair to say that you can't please everybody and Match Directors are well advised to remember that they're in the entertainment business and if matches are not entertaining attendance will decline. I've seen it more than once. Someone takes over a match and starts writing stages and placing targets the way they want them, but NOT the way the majority of their shooters prefer. Then a few years later they're scratching their heads and wondering why their attendance is in single digits. I don't think the idea that championship matches should be harder than typical matches is valid. The difficulty comes from who else is signed up since everyone is shooting the same match. I'll be shooting six state matches this spring and I already have a pretty good idea which ones will be difficult to place in the top ten and which ones will be difficult to place in the top twenty and it has pretty much ZERO to do with target size, distance or shooting sequences and everything to do with who else will be there. So intentionally making a match 'difficult' through really long distances or really tough sequences is only going to irritate a segment of the middle of the pack and lower shooters who are denied the chance to get in personal best times or to walk away with a clean match. Mix it up folks. Give the shooter some speed runs, give them some 'challenge' stages, give them some that are in the middle of those two extremes. If matches are built that way there ends up being at least some stages that will appeal to pretty much every shooter there. Unless you prefer the Henry Ford attitude of folks can have any color car they want as long as it's black. *Matches like Bordertown are an exception to that. Everyone knows what they're going to get there, so if you don't like big and close you shouldn't have signed up.

Howdy JEDI Creeker. I don't have a comment on match difficulty vs simplicity, but I do agree with Capt BB. But personally speaking, it ain't the match that is befitting a Championship but rather the competition that makes it a worthy event. And as we know, the big matches usually brings out some of the top shooters from everywhere. ...........Widder

Do the make the field longer for the Super Bowl? Raise the goal for the NBA championship? I like a mix. But to make it harder just because you add the name championship to it? If it's not fun. I won't go. One reason I have never been back to Winter Range. It was just not very fun. Flame away.

I used Carbon Tetrachloride in a jar similar to Eyesa's description. Killed them in seconds with no damage to the insect. The improvised salt shotgun sounds like more fun though. FWIW - The Bug A Salt gimmick is worthless for anything other than getting salt all over the place and pissing off the wife by getting salt all over the place.

You are correct as to the starting point - but I wanted to expand from (and not be perceived as bashing on EoT) specifically. The term has been used at many different shoots and I have never understood the rationale that a Championship shoot is supposed to be more difficult than any other shoot.

I did not shoot at EoT. The phrase referenced has been used for many many years (and pertaining to many other shoots) prior to this year's EoT. @Singin' Sue 71615 the use of the term was not intended to slight or insult you. My apologies. I'm just curious why criticism of a match (number of procedurals, percentage of clean shooters, fun) is waved away by the phrase "Championship match" as if that explains/ justifies further targets or less straightforward stages. Having been a match director for a number of years - I wrote straight forward matches designed to encourage successful engagement and speed from every level of shooter. I never wrote a match with the intention of slowing anyone. I always believed (that regardless of match type) the same shooters were going to end up at the top of the score sheet - but the shooters that didn't buckle could feel successful as well. I never felt that the winners were less elevated because the mid pack shooters were less challenged.

As a 40 year aerospace worker (started on the Apollo/Saturn Program until retirement in 2000), I never fail to get excited about a space event. Space X & Boeing have taken advantage of the huge leaps in technology made possible by the early programs for sure! About the time I retired Space X was starting and using our facility in El Segundo before they bought a site from our company. One of my old directors on the Shuttle Program was in charge of the early manufacturing effort and offered me a job on their first rocket program. I was retiring soon and almost took it, but decided to go ahead and relocate out of California. What might have been, I'll never know! LOL

First, if you have a "Choke Wrench," throw it away. A choke wrench will well over torque the chokes. The perfect choke wrench is a Quarter. Tiny dab of Anti-Sieze. Since I clean my Shotguns with PAM, after the general cleaning I'd just take 'em out and use PAM on a rag to clean the threads and re-install. Nothing special.

For a short time I had a land line number close to a Pizza joint. Had no success in changing things till I took orders and offered discounts. Pretty quick I stopped getting calls.

I live in eastern Oregon where it gets into the triple digits quite often in the summer, but the humidity is relatively low. I've been shooting CC almost my whole SASS career (started shooting in 2004). I generally wear everything but the chaps all the time. Cuffs, spurs, wild rag, suspenders, sleeve garters, a couple of knives, vest, etc. Not sure why on the chaps, I just never have worn them. All that having been said, one thing nobody has mentioned is wild rag material. I've found that pure silk wild rags work pretty well at keeping my neck, and thence my head, relatively cool without needing to have water added to them. I tend to avoid synthetics and cottons as much as possible for that reason. And I make sure that I drink a lot of water.

Kinda minimalist....might want to ad at least shirt, pants, and boots.

I have read the following sentence on many occasions in regard to state, regional, National and World Championship events... The shoot had a difficulty as befits a Championship shoot. Really? Does the "difficulty" of a shoot make winning it more prestigious? Or is winning at an "easy" shoot less meaningful? Let's say (hypothetically) that tomorrow - the board of EoT gets together; looks over their surveys, analyzes the clean shooter percentage and number of procedurals and then decides that next year's event will be "simpler" or closer or bigger or whatever with a goal of 25% clean shooters. Would EoT become less prestigious? Would you no longer recognize the category winners as World Champions? I ask the above because anytime a "challenging" match is criticized - the comments are poo - poo'd and hand waved away with the statement, "difficulty as befits a Championship shoot". And I'm just curious why?

Well, it spring time and the Carpenter Bees (wood bore bee) have once again decided to make my deck a 'holy place'. BUT, once again, my fully automatic air soft rifle has declared my decks a 'No Fly Zone'. As you've already guessed, my spring time game of entertainment is airial combat training with my air soft against those carpenter bees. THEY ARE FAST.....and can maneuver faster than you realize. But one thing for sure, they have a low tolerance to pain, especially with a small pellet traveling at 375 fps make contact with their fat little body. Let the War Games begin! ..........Widder

I didn't attend EOT this year, so I have no business commenting on the quality of the match. If I had attended and enjoyed it, I would share that here. If I attended and didn't enjoy it I would share that with the MD, privately.

I got the cops called on me in North Carolina. I was working on my bass boat in the front yard. As I was climbing out I slipped and down I went, right on a new fire ant nest I didn’t know was there. Those little (colorful language omitted) bite the heck out of me. I moved my boat and got the Coleman fuel. I found 3 bunches of them and 3 different holes. I poured fuel in each hole. The hole gallon then I tossed a match. WOOMF! The entire yard jumped a few inches, it seemed. No more fire ants. Sheriff’s Deputy showed up to ask what was going on. I told him. He smiled and said “It looks like you took care of the problem. Have a good rest of your day.” and left. The center of my yard wasn’t quite the same but the ants were gone. After a few rain storms the dirt settle back where it was. I never did figure out who called the law. Didn’t really care at that point. Ants were gone. I guess that was scorched earth too.

Why? The cheapest SxS is easily double the cost of a Stevens 301. Not to mention the SxS is almost double the weight. Recoil with my reloads is not an issue, and the fact that ejectors are allowed on single shots makes it way easier for a kid to handle the reloading/unloading process.

I don’t bother the bees or any insects unless they decide to move into my structures. I rent now, but I still keep a bug free structure zone. For carpenter bees I just watch and see where they get interested in then seal the hole or crack. Now, Yellowjackets? I have a scorched earth policy with them. Evil little bastages!

In 2002, after 24 years of operating my solo veterinary practice, I closed it and took a job with the USDA inspecting slaughterhouses and food processing plants. The phone company recycled my old veterinary practice phone number to a new supermarket in town. About 12 years later I retired from the USDA. I considered going to that supermarket, identifying myself, and asking if they had any messages for me. Alas, I didn't have the courage. This thread makes me wish I had done that!! 😁

Can someone please tell me where the "coast of Tallahassee" is? Tallahassee is ~20 direct miles from the coast. It was driving me nuts hearing them repeat that over and over and over.

No DEI stuff here! No, the commander and pilot sit in the center seats, with Butch and Suni on the two outboard seats. It is easier to get the two center people out first, then Suni and then Butch. And #$%&^*!, they were never "stranded", anymore than military personnel who wind up getting their overseas tours extended. For that matter, had it become necessary to bring the two and the other two who flew up on the substitute Dragon for the Boeing Starliner, they could have done so on that spacecraft. But, if they had brought them back before the rest of Crew 9, it would have meant four astronauts/cosmonauts too few to conduct the science and maintenance tasks scheduled. Suni and Butch are both Naval aviators/test pilots/astronauts, and understood the reasons. Best wishes to them for a good reconditioning to Earth's 1g.

I did a quick search and found the fire is named the Hickory Hill Road fire. It has burned almost 7,000 acres and is 3 miles NE of Arcadia just east of Hiwasee Rd. There are strong SW winds, so the fire is likely to be driven away from the shooting range. Keep the fire fighters and property owners in your prayers as this is one of several dangerous fires in Oklahoma.

Mineral spirits are fine....don't soak them though, if the crimp is weak, fluid can get into the powder or even primer. I clean ALL my loaded ammo in my vibratory bowl cleaner to remove bullet and case lube left on them, with lizard litter, a dryer sheet and a cap of mineral spirits in the full bowl. In 30 minutes, clean and even polished, and never had a failure to fire (or damage to the rounds). good luck, GJ

Just read a good article about EOD in the Marshall Islands --- letter-from-the-marshall-islands-defuzing-the-past (credit archaeology magazine) - the estimated percentage of ordnance that didn't explode on impact is astounding. Beautiful gear, sir. I finally get to try out my complete setup this afternoon at the Rio practice match. I am looking forward to the old hands do that, "Whaddya think you are doin', boyo, that' ain't gonna work!" And you know what? They're probably right, so I will listen patiently and politely. Also a good time to find out if my shotgun black powder loads will knock over the steel!

We had a # one digit off from a Taxi Co in Yonkers, NY. We used to get those calls at 2:00 am. I tried to reason with people ‘under the weather’. Telling them they called the wrong number. They would hang up and call right back. After a number of calls I finally tried telling them the Taxi was on the way. That person also called back and got belligerent, demanding that I get the Taxi there ASAP. I just told them it was a wrong number and left the phone off the hook for the rest of the night. The next day on a hunch I tried calling a number with an exchange number one digit off. The answer was “Junkers Junion”. I asked if this was a Taxi Cab Co. The answer was yes. That pretty well guaranteed that this was going to continue, so I had our phone Co give us a new number. End of Taxi calls. CJ
