  1. At our monthly shoot this weekend; I was approached by a shooter that doesn't play with us much anymore. I lit up when I saw this shooter; because this man was an inspiration to me when I began shooting. This man is Irish Red; with his shamrock printed shirts and green felt hats - in the early 2000's, Irish was the Duelist to beat in Southern Nevada. I watched Irish Red and emulated him; taking his advice and guidance on shooting Duelist. I said often back then, "I want to be just like Irish when I grow up". With his help; I became a fairly proficient Duelist and won a buckle or two. I also watch Irish Red interact with other shooters and admired his willingness to mentor, advise and give of himself. I have tried to live up to the example he set as a leader and mentor; I have often fallen short of his level - but I always knew what I should be striving for. As we shook hands and caught up; Irish motioned me to follow him to his car. "I hoped you would be here this weekend" he stated as he opened his door. Reaching in, he removed a hatbox and handed it to me. Inside was one of Irishs custom felt hats; this one a green derby with red feather custom made for Irish Red with his name and SASS number inside. "What is this?", I ask. Not entirely sure why I'm being handed this box. "It's yours", Irish replied. "I want you to have it". This gift means more to me than I can express. It is a great honor and I will wear it with pride. Years ago; while at the top of his game - he thought enough of me to advise and direct and 20 years later as his participation wanes - he continues to give of himself. Thank you, Irish. I want to be just like you when I grow up.

  2. Sorry Griff, have to disagree. This shooter lost an entire match to something that was deemed enough of a problem to change. All of the subsequent shooters had a different stage to shoot; I don't care how many shooters were able to get through it safely. Would you be ok with targets that were 20 yards away when you shot them and were moved up to 10 for everyone else? If it was a prop and if it was changed by match officials, then MDQ erased.

  3. In most cases I believe that we, as shooters, must consider more than target sequence, transitions, etc into our performance at a match. We need to take the environment (weather, landscape, etc), position of props, and so much more into consideration in order to navigate the through the stage with our best level of speed and accuracy AND SAFELY. I might have even noticed something like that and mentioned that the posse needed to watch out for it when moving. However, with that said, I do believe that if I was the one that fell and got the MDQ and the prop was fixed later, I would politely request a reshoot. In any case, fixing the prop was the correct thing to do for safety's sake. A trip hazard in the path of movement with loaded firearms is not something to take lightly. We often kick rocks and sticks out of the path of movement. I've seen tables leveled or strengthen and other small repairs done to insure safety as well. Safety first!

  4. I don't think any specific rule change is necessary. My opinion: I would vote NO RESHOOT based on the one shooter having a problem navigating the stage in the manner described by the OP. BUT...because that particular situation deemed it a safety issue that it was later removed for everyone else, then YES, I would vote for a RESHOOT under those circumstances. AND furthermore, I would allow those who already shot the stage an option for a reshoot OR, throw out the stage for EVERYONE. ..........Widder

  5. The inconsistency with the calls is one of the things that troubles me about this as well. You are correct that the proposed change makes is OK to move from the LT to the Firing Ling with a cocked, loaded rifle as long as there is no round in the chamber. You are correct that it will still be a SDQ to move from the LT to the firing line with a closed, cocked, empty shotgun. It will also still be a SDQ to change position on the firing line with a closed, cocked, unloaded rifle. It will also still be a SDQ to move from the firing line to the ULT with a closed, cocked, unloaded rifle. There are a lot of nuances in the proposal that are going to cause a lot of inconsistent calls.

  6. If the stage is unsafe but it was not realized that it was unsafe until the hazard knocked someone over, then it should be a do over for the person that fell, in my opinion. I think this is a MD judgement and doesn't need a rule change. The only other issue is should the first shooters be given a re-shoot because the prop had been changed.

  8. Yep, seems very inconsistent to me. The more complex we make the rules, the harder it is to run a match without argument, and the harder it is for a new shooter to learn all the rules. Both would be bad outcomes, IMHO. Better if shooters learn to drop and check hammers at the LT. Good luck, GJ

  9. Don’t get me started...I have a list. I firmly believe that we need a system where one can report a driver for being a (insert colorful expletive here) and once that driver gets 5 reports the police track them down and slap the daylights out of them. If they get 5 more reports they lose their license and their car is taken and sold to raise money for highway improvements...or for police medical issues resulting from slapping the daylights out of morons.

  10. While Whitney Houston's rendition was clean and well done, this offering by Meatloaf was sung from the heart with pride, feeling, and a joy in being American!! The song is meant to be sung with pride and gusto!! It's meant to have a bit of a martial feel with kind of a chest pounding, "standing with your compatriots and facing the world with pride" bravado about it!! The man captured all of that!! He's that guy standing behind the third base dugout, so proud of his flag and country, singing at the top of his lungs for the whole world to see and hear!!!

  11. In this case the ULT seems best, but it's not required. In some cases the common sense thing to do is to send the shooter back to the LT. For example, the shooter forgot his shotgun shells. Go back to the LT, put your guns on it (all of them) then get your shells. No need to unload and load again.
    4 points
  12. The SDQ penalty for arrival at the LT with loaded firearms is for "failure to adhere to loading and unloading procedures" (on the previous stage). That would not apply to a reshoot situation on the same stage. The shooter should still be directed to the ULT to unload and inspect any firearms that were dropped for damage or obstructions in the barrel or chambers.

  15. We've all got'em. Some of us have more than one. What you got? My top 2, I can't decide which drives me more crazy, the one that waits until the last moment before merging when a lane is closed or the one that rides in the left lane on the interstate and won't move over.

  16. Left over roast turkey with left over chicken gravy; Chow chow (the kind without tomatoes, quite spicy); cranberry, maraschino cherry and pecan salad; the last two slices of home made white bread; iced southern sweet tea; and two oatmeal raisin cookies from the bakery. My dog and I eat pretty well, way too much and way too often, but my kids can tell Dad ain't starving. That's The first thing they check when they visit. They grew up without much (as did my wife and I before we met) and they are certain sure I'm going to die of starvation. Actually there was a time when that was true. Now I think it's just a family ritual.

  20. 1. Driving in the far left (passing) lane under the speed limit and refusing to move over. 2. Pulling out of a driveway directly into my path when there's nobody behind me for miles. 3. Plodding along 5-10mph under the speed limit on a two-lane road letting traffic back up behind you. 4. Taking up more than one parking space, either deliberately or out of sheer laziness. 5. Slowing down on a highway on-ramp because you're too chicken or incompetent to merge into traffic properly. 6. Using stopped traffic or a red light as an excuse to start sending out a flurry of texts. 7. Besides the above, intentionally leaving enough space between you and the car ahead to allow a 747 to make an emergency landing. ...and that's just for starters.

  31. I don't care too much what I get back, and a lot of times I will give 2 or 3 stages worth to the one doing most of the brass picking on the posse. Especially if they're one of those good pickers that doesn't hold up the stage looking for EVERY LAST piece of brass. I love a good brass picker. It's one of the most under rated jobs to having a quick moving posse.

  32. Years ago I had a dog very much like the police dog in the photo with the lady Officer. His name was Gus. We got him from the pound. He was a Shepard mix. Jet black. He was a handsome dog. He had been abused and if you raised your hand to reach for something, like from a cabinet, he would cower and raise his left paw as if to deflect a blow or defend himself. I turned that around and I taught him to salute on command. When I would say salute he would sit very proudly and raise his left paw in a salute. I also worked with him very hard to teach him to “smile” like the dog above. I couldn’t get him to do it on command. One night a man came to the door after dark. I didn’t turn the lights on and answered the door. I could feel Gus next to me growling very quietly. I asked the man what he wanted and he gave some dim witted response as he reached for the door handle of the screen door. I said “Gus, smile for the man.” Gus bore his teeth and snapped his muzzle open and closed and made this sound that actually made me nervous. The man literally jumped straight back about ten feet and yelled “What the f*** is that!” I said “That’s Gus. Go away. Tell your friends “ Gus got a leftover 16 Oz ribeye that night and from then on he would salute and smile on command. He was such a wonderful dog.

Congratulations to one of our own, Larry Page or in the cowboy world Tucker T Fudpucker. (Don't want to miss type that one) He does make beautiful knives and the honer of the cover of Russell's is well deserved.

  37. Is it really a prop failure in this case? It doesn't sound like a one to me, a collapsing table or falling gun stand would. It's very bad stage "design", but the 4x4 didn't behave differently than expected. And it's kind of the intention of most props to be an "obstruction", or why else should we shoot through windows and all kind? Sticking a rifle through jail bars to shoot is risky. Stepping on a wooden porch with western boots is risky. So get rid of all "unnecessary" props like windows, porches etc.? Where do you draw the line on what's too risky? In the moment someone trips or a gun is dropped? I suppose no shooter to trip or drop a gun intentionally and it's almost ALWAYS kind of poor circumstances and a portion of bad luck that leads to a DQ. Maybe the shooter isn't to blame for what happened, but there's also noone else to blame, and at the end, the shooter is still the one responsible. If (s)he considers the stage as (too) risky (s)he could act at a safer speed or refuse to start the stage until something has been altered (and then granted the right of a reshoot to every shooter in front). But if the shooter takes this risk with the result of a loaded firearm dropped, it's still a dropped loaded firearm that might have swept people.

  38. ROII Page 9 "In the event of a prop failure, the Chief Range Officer should be prepared to make a determination of whether or not the shooter shall continue the course of fire or cease fire immediately. The shooter will not be penalized for a prop failure." SHB page 21 Reshoots are not awarded for ammunition or firearm malfunctions. However, if there is a range failure (failure of props, failure of the timer, or Range Officer interference) beyond the competitor’s control, a reshoot may be granted. - On a reshoot, the competitor starts over clean, carrying only accrued safety penalties forward. If we take ROII page 9 at face value, then perhaps the only safety penalties carried forward, per page 21 SHB should be non prop related infractions.

  41. I've long said that Whitney Houston's version was among the best things and the worst things to happen to the song. The best, because not only was it an amazing rendition, but given the timing of it, as we were preparing for a ground offensive and who knew what was to come, it was the right rendition of the right song at the right time. The worst, because everyone since has been trying to top it.
