Well my two are going to start competing full time next year. Which is great. Then a friend from high school who isnt a shooter asked if I could help her kids too as their father has no interest. Not a problem. Happy to help. So fair warning, if you see me running around like a chicken with its head chopped off next year its because there will be 6 new sass shooters under 14 somewhere close by. Oh and my wife has decided to shoot gf now and wants help with that.... There will be no rest for me next year I'm thinking.6 points

For nearly fifteen years, we had Harley, a beautifully built Dalmatian that I trained for home defense. He would respond to my commands, but he also went into DEFCON 1 when I wasn't there. I mean full red, "This is the line you DON'T cross!!" mode. It meant, don't come here when Daddy ain't home!! I was out for the day and one of the guys that coached basketball with me came over to give some schedule information to Schoolmarm for me. Harley didn't like the guy anyway and neither did Schoolmarm, but he showed up on the door step and knocked on the door. Mama goes to the door and Harley joins her, sitting quietly beside her as she opens the door. Jack reaches for the storm door latch and she tells him not to open the door. He ignores her and the next thing you know he's standing on the roof of his car, the dog standing on the hood, roaring and snapping with every hair on his head, back, and tail standing straight up!! Schoolmarm grabs Harley's collar and orders him to stop. Then walks the dog back to the house. Jack gets in his car and starts to leave, so she asks him what he wanted. He just kinda' stuttered that he'd get with me later, threw the car in reverse and disappeared in a cloud of dust and tire smoke!! Word got around the whole county and folks would call before they came to our house after that. Even people we didn't know would call ahead!!5 points

Your friend is a moron. Let's say CONUS went completely to Central. When the kids here get to school by 8AM, in Maine the sun says it's 10, while in LA the sun (if such a thing exists out there behind the smog) says it's 6. In the winter California kids will be waiting for the bus at 6AM, and the sun won't be up for three hours. The Maine kids, getting off the bus at 4PM, and the sun has been down for two hours. In the summer California would almost be the land of the midnight sun - sundown at 11, maybe 11:30.4 points

Years ago I had a dog very much like the police dog in the photo with the lady Officer. His name was Gus. We got him from the pound. He was a Shepard mix. Jet black. He was a handsome dog. He had been abused and if you raised your hand to reach for something, like from a cabinet, he would cower and raise his left paw as if to deflect a blow or defend himself. I turned that around and I taught him to salute on command. When I would say salute he would sit very proudly and raise his left paw in a salute. I also worked with him very hard to teach him to “smile” like the dog above. I couldn’t get him to do it on command. One night a man came to the door after dark. I didn’t turn the lights on and answered the door. I could feel Gus next to me growling very quietly. I asked the man what he wanted and he gave some dim witted response as he reached for the door handle of the screen door. I said “Gus, smile for the man.” Gus bore his teeth and snapped his muzzle open and closed and made this sound that actually made me nervous. The man literally jumped straight back about ten feet and yelled “What the f*** is that!” I said “That’s Gus. Go away. Tell your friends “ Gus got a leftover 16 Oz ribeye that night and from then on he would salute and smile on command. He was such a wonderful dog.4 points

Back in 1999 there was a group of woodworkers that founded the North County Woodworking Club. Most of us had met through or been students of Palomar College in San Marcos, Ca. woodworking program. One member who lives in Rancho Santa Fe decided to invite a bunch of us over to his house on the second Wednesday of the month for a “Woodworkers 12 Step Lunch”. IIRC there were about 18 of us there for the first lunch and of course over the years our numbers have dwindled. I just received word that one of our members, who was recovering from brain tumor surgery, was up on his roof last week doing roofing repairs and fell off. He is in a non reversible coma and not expected to live. Every year he and a bunch of other woodworkers would turn wooden tops to be given away to little kids in hospitals, Toys For Tots and other charities for kids, one year he turned in excess of 900 tops that he donated to these causes. Our little 12 step group is down to six now and every month our little lunch really feels like an intimate family get together. A few of us who can still produce things in our shops will bring a show and tell item or two and pass it around to be critiqued and admired. Strangely I’m the only one left that does not have a military background all of the others served in the Navy and three of them on pre nuclear submarines, I could listen to the stories they tell all day long. One attendee served with former president Jimmy Carter and every year he builds chairs or other items that are auctioned off for one of President Carter’s causes. Our lunch in November is going to be a tough one.4 points

The problem with being complacent at local matches is that it can and does spill over to the more formal matches because folks aren't following to the given rules. There are ways to tell folks that they are out of compliance with the rules that don't make you "That Guy" and won't ruin anyone's day.3 points

The crowd goes wild: “DST!, DST!, DST!” The crowd votes: “DST!, DST!, DST!” The state government gets involved: “dst, dst, dst, dst” The Congress gets involved: “You must change some of your own laws before the state can pass this bill.” Lobbyists for banks and shipping companies start dropping in on Congressional offices with small bags of loot. The State Houses convene to discuss law changes. Special interest groups want riders installed with the changes made to state laws to accommodate their interests. “Lesbian Mammoth Seals need their own beach and must be accommodated!” The State Houses are at a standstill over funding for the beach. State biologists find that the Lesbian Mammoth Seal beach is also home to the Golden Stinging Lisper Wasp, a completely unknown insect up to this point. A shout goes up that TWO endangered species need accommodation and it must be addressed. Petitions are made and shoppers from all over the state are subjected to badgering to sign petitions to save these two endangered species. The petitions are successful and after two years the Lesbian Mammoth Seals and the Golden Stinging Lisper Wasp have their beach. The residents of the surrounding communities are angry as half their beach is now off limits and they sue the state. All legislation and enforcement of the new LMS/GSLW Beach are put on hold pending the outcome of the lawsuit. Five years go by and the beach community wins. The settlement is that they give up half of LMS/GSLW Beach and the community gets a new beachfront facelift to attract more business into the area. Somewhere in central California a man shows up at work at a bakery an hour early because he forgot to dry his clock back an hour. The supervisor laughs because he had done the same thing, so they make coffee and start their day. The man says “Hey, didn’t we vote a few years ago to end this crap and stay with Daylight Savings Time year round?” The supervisor says “Yeah we did. I wonder what happened to that? Hey, did you see in the paper that those seals those activists claimed were lesbians actually weren’t? The males appear female because there is no differentiation in markings between males and females. And that wasp? They only found one and it turned out to be something that someone from another country had deposited on the beach from their sandals. What a freakin’ waste of money, huh?”3 points

Salmon. One of our firefighters brought in smoked salmon. I allowed myself two small pieces. Only two. It tasted so good that -- had I not strictly limited myself to two pieces -- I could have eaten the whole container!3 points

I saw Alien at Great Lakes Naval Station. The racquetball courts were closed and we needed something inexpensive to do so me and a few buddies went to the movies on base. We had a choice of some lame “chick flick” or some movie none of us had heard of called “Alien”. I remember commenting how it can’t be too scary, there’s a picture of an egg on the movie poster...3 points

It has bothered me that my adopted father Ernest Fisher was not getting a flag on his grave for memorial & Veterans Day. I never had documents. This year I resolved to attend to the matter with more energy. I contacted the secretary of NH VA. With a name like Cynthia Fisher, how could I lose? She was very helpful and pointed me to Massachusetts VA. DAMN, three minutes and I had a document. A guy in Concord (state capital) told me to contact a local American Legion guy and “if they won’t put a flag there, let me know”. I plan to check out the grave on 11/11. I’ll keep ya posted.2 points

Reagan was governor for two terms, left office in '75. Until 1992 CA went GOP for President in every election since '48: https://www.latimes.com/projects/la-pol-ca-california-voting-history/ I'll grant that since '59 the Democrats have had a lock on our Legislature, except for one session in the mid-1970s, but even that wasn't too bad until the '90s when the loons from NY and other eastern seaboard states started coming in droves. A few came, got a toe-hold, took control of San Francisco first, established a political machine to rival Tammany Hall with the Burton Machine, and it grew from there.2 points

That may be, Henry, but those "kindred spirits" were a definite minority back then. And most of those "kindred spirits" were earlier transplants. I remember bumper stickers back in the sixties that said "Welcome to California - now go home!" often followed by a second one that said "And take someone with you!"2 points

I remember as a kid growing up in Iowa drinking chocolate phosphates at Cunningham drug store (now closed) at their soda fountain. They had other flavors too, vanilla, cherry, orange and lime that I can remember drinking as well. They also had a special ice cream sundae called the "Candyland".2 points

This article made me laugh.....his first sentence is so true...even his mistakes are funny! Articles like this is what gives the 44-40 a bad reputation. "Those who enjoy a good cowboy yarn have come across some glaring mistakes by writers." http://www.shootingrangeindustries.com/gun-mistakes-in-books-44-henry-44-40-ammo-sharps-spencer-repeating-rifle-more/2 points

I see these signs in people's yards, "My dog can make it to the fence in 8.3 seconds (or somesuch), can you?" My pups probably can equal that, but they'd lick you to death! OTOH, I haven't heard of ANYbody that can run faster than 830 ft/sec!2 points

On a lighter note... Our MD has been on vacation. He wrote a stage with a starting line "we'll have to share our kill with the buzzards." I asked him about it and he "swore" he hadn't read about the "road kill law."2 points

In most calibers/chamberings (including .38 spl), most SASS competitors load the same recipe for rifle and pistol, if they have matching chamberings in rifle and pistol. Select a light bullet that runs well in rifle with it's Overall Length set by a good place on the slug to crimp the load, load rounds with enough powder to make the kind of velocity you want in the pistols, and test that that load works well in both types of guns. The rifle will shoot these loads about 150 FPS faster than the pistols do, in case you want to know. This lets you not have to worry about keeping rounds separately packaged and carried to the loading table so they can still be identified and loaded in the right gun. Simple is really good, especially as you start out. If you find you need a few higher power loads for knockdowns, then develop a load for that and mark those rounds (sharpie on the base of case works). A load that usually works for .38 special is 125 grain round nose flat point bullet loaded to make 600 to 700 FPS in the pistols, with Overall Length at about 1.550" (for an 1866 or 1873 or Henry type rifle). As you gain experience, you can adjust from there to what you consider "perfect." Good luck, GJ2 points

Howdy, Rye! We welcome everybody! We will leave the light on for ya! Furnace too! We encourage folks to stay home if it's bad out. The last thing we want to do is have people on bad roads! We're scheduled for at least 10 matches for the indoor season so if you miss a couple, there's plenty more. May is a long way off. Remember, 22 caliber cowboy guns are allowed as long as they can make a visible hole in the cardboard. Joe provides our wax bullet shotgun shells. All the best , Mo2 points

I put up a fight for 26 years. It did no good. And I have news for you, I am an American and I will go any damn where I please. This is not just for Warden. It’s for all of you that look down your noses at us. It’s easy to blame California because most people in this country have no idea what goes on in their own state or even their own county governments . One day you’ll wake up...but I doubt it. You have someone else to blame and that makes it all good. I don’t see any of our fellow like minded “friends” lining up to help us, that’s for damn sure. I have lived all over this country and this country sure as hell isn’t what it used to be and I am sick and tired of people looking down their noses at me when the place they call home is just as bad as California, they just don’t know it yet. Someday, you all might just be calling on us to help you...someday we just might...or maybe we won’t. You get as good as you give.2 points

DDD: I say this with some sarcasm. See What? Heck, there are numerous occasions where ya got 3 spotters actually watching and moving to positions to see targets adequately and they still manage to miss things. On a more realistic comment, we have props that a shooter grabs their SG, shoots 2 and moves to next window to engage more SG targets. All the TO can do is move with them and at the same time, stay out of their way. For all intended purposes, the TO's do a great job. But there are those circumstances that even with good efforts, a TO can't see everything. ..........Widder2 points

I was at a monthly match a couple years back when the score keeper decided to holler out someone's name who needed to go to the loading table. I was already blasting away when I hear what sounded like 'CEASE FIRE'. I hesitated, looked at the TO and he said....."Keep going", of which I fired a couple more rounds and heard it again..... "Cease Fire". TO sez again.... "Keep going". You guessed it..... the score keeper was hollering a name that sounded just like "Cease Fire". I didn't ask for a reshoot but I did ask that particular score keeper to not yell out names while a shooter is on their stage. ..........Widder2 points
