3 or 4 months ago I posted here in the Saloon about a cruise that was to occur on July 4th aboard the USS Constitution. The Navy and the museum were going to take her out and turn her around. They are going to take Old Ironsides our this coming Saturday and they are doing the same on July 4th. There were 120 slots on each day to be drawn. Successful candidates can bring one guest. I got an email yesterday that I won a spot on the July 4th cruise! I sent an RSVP this morning confirming I will attend. I am taking my son-in-law along as my guest. I am so excited about this I can hardly wait. To think that when I was a kid I used to walk by the Navy recruiter’s office uptown and stop and look at the old recruiting poster with the sailor and the boy looking at the Constitution and dream one day I would get to see her. I did get to see her last year and that was a dream come true. I never thought I would ever get to board her and go on a cruise, be it a short harbor cruise under tug power, but so what! I get to go on a cruise aboard Old Ironsides. I am really looking forward to this.

My intent was to make a point about some bad interactions with police I have had but in making that point I alienated and impugned some of the people I admire and have great respect for. Yes, you lose to the shooters who didn't blow any stages, have no rifle jams, had no dud pistol rounds, didn't drop shotgun shells, and had no procedurals. Total time is the best and most fair way to go. --Dawg

Here's a hint to make sure it's not happening to your shooters. The RO must watch the timer display as the last shot is fired. If you did not see the time advance upon that shot being fired, you can be CERTAIN the timer did not pick up at last shot. As stated above, require a reshoot in that case (whether shooter wants one or not). Other hints - don't write stages with rifle last. If you feel you really want to do a rifle last, then EVERY RO must get the timer in a position to always catch the last shot. Building type props with rifle through a window, or a buckaroo shooting a .22, or mouse-fart loads in 32s and 38s, all are conditions where you have to be really aware of catching last shot. Reminds me of the scene from The Godfather where Don Corleone addresses the "commission." "How do things get so far"? It's the curse of email. I can't see your expressions, or hear your tone or inflection. Some email statements that appear harsh would be chuckled at during a face to face chat. Yes, there are people that should not be the police (Scott Peterson, for one). I have worked with a few. In the Illinois State Police we promote the biggest jerks to desk jobs so they don't interact with the motoring public. Doesn't that sound harsh? But that same statement with a smile and a nudge can be humorous. I know that because I used it on a friend who rose to the rank of Major. We both had a good laugh. You know how law abiding gun owners get defensive when they try to lump us together with criminals that use guns unlawfully? Yep. Same here. I have had instances where I had to speak with current police after retirement. Friends/neighbors would ask, "Why didn't you show him your badge"? Because I want them to handle the situation like they would for anyone else. Because, quite frankly, I am anyone else. That took a lot of character for Pat to put this out here. Duly noted and appreciated. Now Pat buys the next round and my Uber to get home!

Billy pointed out a great point. One of the reason's that I am a proponent of timers staying at the stage during a "big match" is slight variance in the timers. Even if not as big of a difference as his case, but... If one timer is .1 seconds fast over, say 10 seconds and another is .1 seconds slow over the same 10 seconds If timers go with the posse, you could start to open up a 1/2 second gap over 20 seconds just in timer variance. If the timer stays on the stage, each shooter gets the pain of a "fast" timer. And, everyone gets the benefit of a "slow" timer.

Branching out from Frontier Cartridge Duelist into Frontiersman. Shot my 1860s for a full match for the third time Saturday. First Match 1 malfunction and 1 miss, Second Match 2 Malfunctions and 1 miss Third Match Almost no breeze and very high humidity made for some challenging stages. But when the scores were read at the end of the match it was revealed I didn't have any misses. While my my performance was far from clean, I still got to add another flag to my Clean Match plaque. Frontiersman is a BLAST!

Just experienced my first large match this last weekend at the Oregon State Championships. Man, what a blast! Was hooked already with local matches but the large match was a whole new level of awesomeness. Met some great new pards, met some folks from the wire, got some great tips and even placed 4th in my category (out of I think 5 but I'll take it lol). I also learned that I really like the "thump" of black powder and have a lot more guns to buy (already knew this though haha). What a hoot! Thanks to Whispering Wade, Artic Annie, Tetherow Tex LaRue and the rest of the 97 Rangers and everyone involved for putting on a great event. It was a great time. Looking forward to checking out some other events in the future. Just had to share. Cheers!

Hey Smoky! I bought an Auto Breech lock last year to replace the Pro 1000 I used for about 25 years. I load .38LC, .38spl and 44-40 in BP sub and smokeless, and 45ACP. I especially like the breech lock rings and bought extras to accommodate the various Lee dies. I went ahead and upgraded to the newer auto-drum powder measure which allows me to preset measures for each caliber and easily change them out. I use the old universal case feeder for .38 and 45ACP, but hand feed the 44-40 in the open stage #3. The longer 44-40 case does not seem to feed as cleanly as the straight wall cases in the universal feeder. I have an old bullet feed kit, but I couldn't get it to work smoothly so I now hand feed all bullets. I started out with the new safety prime gadget, but had issues with it feeding primers right side up or at all, so now I hand feed primers too. This may sound like a lot of hand feeding, but it actually runs pretty smoothly once set up. I use a 3 die system and I can visually verify powder drop on stage 3 before the bullet feed. Stage 4 sets bullet depth and crimp. I use lock rings on the first two dies and a standard ring on the last because of crowding from the larger lock rings. It was definitely an ergonomic upgrade from the Pro 1000. You will want to get the bullet bin(s) and the bench plate if you are mounting on an existing bench. Also the Auto-Disk riser for the powder die. All-in all I am happy with it and found it affordable. I never came up with the extra for the blue machine either. Take your time and you will get into a nice rhythm, reloading shouldn't be a horse race anyway.

It also depends on how much you drive the vehicle after start up. Most exhaust systems rust out from the inside. Hint-Lowest part of the muffler-Drill a 1/8" hole for a drain, for the condensation that can build up from short trips. When you have it replaced-Tell the shop to use 'heavy-walled' pipe. OLG

I always kind of figured I was being paid to be a "butthead". To the people I wrote tickets I was a "butthead". To the people who just got cut off or saw the guy just run a red light I was a "good cop". To the people I arrested I was a "butthead". To the person who just got robbed, burglarized, beat up, etc, I was a "good cop". To the people I wouldn't let drive down a road because they" live just over there" I was a butthead. To the people who knew I was blocking the street because there was a live power line laying across the road 100 yards down the road I was protecting lives. I never treated any of them differently, but, depending on which side of the line they were standing I was either a "butthead" or a savior. BTW, I have it on sworn testimony that I was polite and a "nice guy" from someone mad about getting a ticket. (I was getting paid overtime to sit in court) That said, yes, there are jerks to be found in any occupation. There may be more perceived jerks in Law Enforcement because they are paid to make people do things they do not want to do. To those people cops are likely to be seen as "buttheads". That's my .02 Angus Cops are the only profession introduced to people at a party by their job title. Everybody has a "Man, this one cop was a D!#&" story.

When I worked In Florida LE could not write a ticket for 5mph over or less. Only a warning. Now, I’m looking through the old roster of the officers who worked for me to recall the 20% who were buttheads and jerks. Having some difficulty with that. I do remember the ones who had valor and lifesaving awards. I do remember the ones who worked with at risk teenagers and the ones who coached little league teams and were scoutmasters. Darned if I can come up with 20% jerks though. I’ll continue to think about that. Let the cop bashing continue. I’m gonna have a doughnut. Gotta maintain the stereotype.

Well, I really think it's just fine the way it is, it's just a game. Same game I played when I was a kid many many years ago. I just enjoy the posse's, the gun smoke and the challenge of bettering my times. I do my best to remember it a game! I'll ever spot all shooters 100 seconds per stage! It's just a game. Thanks for asking. I hope that retirement is treating you well. Yes, I am back to shooting. Kleinert, Kutx & Associates in Lexington, Ky fixed me up just fine. There is still some numbness in the tips of my fingers, but it is fading. Also, I started Forteo injections last June to harden my bones, and the sciatic nerve pain is gone. That is a major relief. Now the VA doc has found some Atrial Fib and the heart rate is not right. I see the electro-cardiologist next month. Sigh. I keep hanging around to see what is going to happen next. On the positive side, I got a moose in Newfoundland last October and have an Antelope hunt in the works for this October. My Weimaraner has decided to become a first rate pointing dog, so I am looking at a trip north to hunt grouse. I am really burning through my son's inheritance but figure I had better while I still can. I suggest you do something similar. Duffield

I know a lot of folks may be jealous of them because they look cool and all, but I don't see the need to be shooting frontiersman. We need all the cowboys on the range that we can get. And if we start shooting some.... Seriously, what did they ever do to you? In all true seriousness, I love a good, well running set of open tops. And, I have often said, there is no harder way to go about playing this game than gunfighter with cap guns.

Both of my sons played in Little League. They both went on to play in high school and adult leagues. They both coached high school baseball and my younger son is Sports/Gymnastics director at local YMCA. He is in charge of league my grandson is playing in. I on the other hand played no baseball growing up but played with them when they were growing up. I have tons of pictures of them at all levels.

I just started this year and went to my first state match and I agree it was awesome. I was nervous about going but everyone said that I'd be fine and they were right. Can't wait to go to another one.

I really don't see the problem. I have been able to CONSISTENTLY hit a 6" target at 300 yards with a Hawken. I've even done it at 400. HOWEVER, it does take a good few minutes to walk out that far and poke the 6" target with the muzzle of the rifle. AND they always Go Down!! Oh, and it's kinda a long walk back too

I don't think some of y'all understand, this has nothing to do with radar. THP will drive on the interstate at the exact speed limit(or 5 mph under) and no one will pass them; thus acting like a pace car. It's beyond frustrating.
