I personally think the biggest mistake new shooters interested in getting into CAS make, especially those that have shot other disciplines, is to go out and purchase cowboy guns without doing research. By research I mean not just reading the Wire and other places, but more importantly trying out weapons before spending a bunch of money on guns that don’t work well for CAS, or for you, and later having to sell at a loss to buy something that works better for you. The first thing interested newcomers to CAS should do is GO TO SOME MATCHES before buying any guns or equipment. Watch a few matches and after each match talk with some of the shooters. I bet 99% of the time someone will be putting guns in your hand for you to try. Try as many of the guns as you can before deciding to purchase any gun. If you have inherited some guns or already own some, talk with the other shooters to get their input about whether or not these guns will work well for CAS. Some will, some won't. Never say never to reloading. Sooner or later if you really get into CAS shooting, you'll be reloading. Before purchasing guns, clothes, leather or reloading equipment, check the Wire for used clothing, leather goods, and equipment. Get recommendations from several shooters that reload. If possible, try out a friend's reloading equipment if he/she will let you. Bottom line is GO TO SOME MATCHES, meet the friendliest people in the world, and be prepared to have FUN, FUN, FUN.

Well, instead of doing the easy push-the-mouse-on-the-appropriate-emogie thing, you could always just type, "I agree with this". But perhaps I have excess time on my hands that allows me to type a coherent response. (Feel free to assume I put a smiley emogie here)

I always win! My score is almost always higher that everyone else, I just dont understand why they always put it at the bottom of the page.

It is a SDQ, too bad for the new guy but he shouldn't have left. He should have kept shooting and figured he learned something about the rules! I had to give a really good friend of mine a SDQ at a local match for the same thing and he was shooting really well up to then!

Update I had a discussion today with 2 of the principles that oversaw the long range side matches. Here's the summary: They received some bad input regarding the use of BP subs. The SASS rules have since been reviewed and they acknowledge that they made a bad call. They are going to retrieve the scores from the long range side match. New award(s) will be made up and sent to those individuals that had originally earned the award. This should bring this to a close. Have a great weekend, BS

I am in the group that if you shoot black powder then it is fine by me. Real or subs doesn't change the facts that with the wind in our faces it is still fun trying to find that second target in a string of five! Whatever floats your boat just keep shooting the Black.

We always assigned a seasoned shooter to posse next to a new shooter. They watched them from cart to the firing line, and made sure they headed for the unloading table. This helped eliminate newbie mistakes.

I bought several cases of it (Pinnacle) back when it was discontinued...it was cheap. I tried it in pistol and rifle and liked real BP better. The Pinnacle works just fine in the SG so I'm just using it up. I also recently bought a case of Black MZ to try. Not fond of it in rifle or pistol either. Will use it in the SG when the Pinnacle is gone. I've loaded real BP in the SG, like it fine, just using up the subs in the SG.

I always thought you were kinda weird! You know I'm kiddin' ya' pard. I do just the opposite of you. Shotgun - Pinnacle. Pistol and Rifle - Real BP (Grafs Reenactor) And as I've posted here before, I have been shooting this way for eight years now. Never once have I used a black powder lubed bullet. Either a standard smokeless lubed bullet or moly coated from Bear Creek. Everywhere from below freezing temps to hot and humid to dry and arid. Never a problem doing 5-6 stages a day. Pistols, hardly ever have to touch them. Might pull the cylinders out and do a quick wipe with a damp cloth, but that's a rare thing. Rifle, I pull a damp bore snake thru at the unloading table after each stage. Quick shot of Ballistol in the muzzle once it's back vertical in the guncart so it runs down the bore keeps any remaining fouling soft. On the rare occasion that things start getting sticky, a quick shot of Ballistol on the carrier and all is good again.

Started with 777. Liked it. Went to APP. Really liked it. Now BP. Love it!

The real thing and only the real thing for me. It's very possible to use smokeless lubed bullets by the way. I have used APP, Pyrodex, and 777; they just are NOT the same. I also don't give a hoot if a competitor is using a sub against me as long as they meet SASS smoke guidelines.

If you look at the IP address, you'll notice it says SASSNET. That means SASS is the central focus of this forum. Your making substitutes sound as a lesser experience does a disservice to those looking at participating in a BP category. All that other stuff you mentioned is just superfluous noise... My personal opinion is that arguing over the differences of real BP and BP Subs is better suited for another thread I believe this thread was about rules at a particular shoot.

The good folks of Yuma have taken ownership of the issue and acknowledged it. They have taken appropriate steps to correct it and they have DONE THE RIGHT THING. Now, the right thing to do is to drop the subject. There is no need to keep on castigating them or casting dispersions about this match (especially if you have never shot at it). So, perhaps folks could start thinking about positive things. Thanks.

With all due respect, I think you are blowing this out of proportion and putting words in people’s mouths. As you well know from previous posts, I don’t like subs and would be happy if they were banned (especially for long range side matches). But, 1) That is my personal opinion, one I doubt is shared by many. 2) I don’t attack people for using subs. First because it’s a dick move and second because it would drive people away from shooting BP. 3) This all boils down to what the rules are for this sport. People argue for rule changes all the time. Most of them never go anywhere and I doubt seriously that the BP rules are going to change any time soon. In the end, we all get to do what we want and play the game as we like (within the rules). The birds of a feather will flock together and that is just fine. What those flocks think of each other is pretty irrelevant as long as they respect the right of the other flocks to exist. (I think I have tortured that metaphor enough). Again, just my opinion.

Sometimes an immature jerk joins SASS. I’ve encountered a few. Usually they don’t stay around for long. Time will tell if this guy is one or just had a bad day.

I mess with nothing at the range that can be avoided. If I were to be resizing sticky hulls, I couldn't be helping on the stage. Too little time, and it would take my concentration away (what little I have left, that is). Instead, I use a shot shell checker gauge after loading - that's when I do have enough time to check loads. UniqueTek, Jim Bowie, several sources. I just found another one that is cheap - Lyman has a great 12 gauge loaded shell checker. The ones that don't pass the check - never make it to a match. They get shot in practice. Once a plastic hull deforms at the mouth enough to be sticky, my experience is that it NEVER can be saved to once again be a reliable shucker with any amount of temporary resizing. Good luck, GJ

Rereading Lorelei’s post she said new shooter to her club. That doesn’t necessarily mean “new” shooter. I can understand a small club not having someone stationed at the loading table but at the very least people in line should be checking each other. Ultimately it is the shooter’s responsibility, but this is a good safety lesson for everyone in the club.

I think of this every once in a while. 1966. Summer. I was ten. There was a convenience store a couple blocks away, and between our house and there lived an old guy in a wheelchair. He'd sit out at the edge of the road waiting for a kid to come by. He'd give you a dollar and send you to the store for a loaf of bread, a pack of bologna and a pack of cigarettes. And for your trouble he let you keep a dime, but he got the rest of the change back. Never heard of any kid skipping with his dollar.

I personally don't think that's a great idea due to holster, hat, and gun restrictions of B-Western. If the particular club doesn't offer Steampunk sign up for Cowboy or Wrangler and dress Steampunk.

It MAY prevent it, but when it doesn't the mentor should not be reprimanded or talked to sternly as was insunuated earlier. That's a good way to run two shooters off. I know you didn't make that statement Doc.

I hope he has some time to reflect and perhaps review the rules and understand why the call was made. If he is to come back to the game, I hope he does so with the understanding that we all screw up, and that the "cowboy way" is to swallow your pride and move forward. If not, he might be the type that is not particularly fun to shoot with. As for the loading table, at most of the matches I have attended, the match director has asked if there are any new shooters. In my case, one or two shooters kept an eye on me, making sure I was doing things correctly. I know it is an extra responsibility, but the mentoring goes a long way.

A lot of places don't have anyone manning the loading table.

I suspect folks want to divide us into little groups so it's easier to win a participation trophy buckle. Same reason some folks decide to shoot a BP sub in a BP category. The sub gives them a little advantage and makes it easier to get that coveted participation trophy buckle.

I like APP because I can use same bullets I use for smokeless and I buy in bulk when APP runs a special.

Still, someone, after the fact, had to initiate the decision to consider changing the results on some basis. Whatever the reason. Why would they use information from someone whose expertise was in another discipline to alter the results?
