  1. When mixing ammo make sure you start the mixer on the lowest speed, if you start on high it proofs all over the place.

  3. Sadly all of the pictures that I took on my IPhone will not download to my iPad so I’ll post them tomorrow when I get home. This one is of the fireplace in the great big house that we rented in Wanona, a quaint little town that was built before there was a Yosemite National Park and then annexed in. They advertise that this place could sleep 16 but I’ll bet 20-22 would fit quite comfortably. It’s really a pretty nice place and we’ll probably do it again in warmer weather. There is very little snow even in the higher elevations between here and Yosemite valley, the main attraction. The fires that came through here earlier this year destroyed thousands of acres but new life springs from these fires. Already there are signs of new foliage starting to appear. Even though it’s cold up here the crowds are still present and traffic in Yosemite valley was quite heavy yesterday. El Capitan, Half Dome, Upper and Lower Yosemite Falls are pretty awe inspiring. The warning signs at key danger points are there for a reason and one young man that we observed climbing on slick rocks learned the hard way and had to be rescued and ambulanced out of the park, kinda put a damper on things but did add to the entertainment factor.

  4. Good morning from Massachusetts!!! I have wanted to shoot CAS for over a decade, but never got around to it. This year, I decided to take the plunge. I picked up a pair of Ruger Vaqueros (old model) case hardened, for a steal I couldnt pass up. So, I guess I am going down that road! I have yet to shoot the pistols, but I am not a novice shooter by any means. I spent 14 years in the Army as an infantryman, and used to go to bowling pin shoots and what used to be the Colt Cup (rifle) with my father. I havent competed since the early 2000s though. One other thing: as these are chambered in .45 Colt, they are expensive as hell to shoot. My father gave me his old Dillon Square B press when he upgraded, and I havent used it yet, as my guns, to this point, were 5.56 and 9MM-both of which are cheap to buy. But, I look to be saving roughly $1 a round reloading, so I am going to start with that. I saw that Hogdon had a Cowboy powder, and plan on giving that a shot. Anyway, I look forward to playing this game, and having fun. Mostly having fun. I love the cowboy movies, love the firearms, and, although not a big fan of dressing up-I totally get the idea of it, and am working on my costume, which, along with gathering my other guns, will be complete by the end of the year. I am also fortunate that my local range has an active CAS group, and hosts shoots all the time. So, I will have good mentors for this sport as well!

  5. All of this is great in theory - until the impact of reality hits. I don't care what color you are - you want you and yours to be safe. When someone threatens to assault your wife or breaks into your home or steals from your shop or takes up residence in your garage, you want the police to take action. There is going to be some real screaming when the folks who pay taxes realize that "social justice" is not a solution for crime. LL

  9. Despite what others might think they are not illegal for any category except the costume categories. They may not look cowboy enough for some people but that doesn't make them illegal. Only footwear specifically called out as unacceptable are Combat Boots and Athletic shoes. Your footwear doesn't fall into either category. If the deciding factor for all the various items we use at at match was "does it look period correct". Just about every single one of us would be in violation for something.

  12. After reading all the comments I wonder what would have been said he had used a picture of them actually being worn. No one could have seen the red plad liner, likely all the lacing would have been covered by his pants, and depending on the angle, the color of the soles would not have been as noticable. Several peope have posted alternatives and it is great that you have found them but finding a pair to actually try on can be exceptionally difficult if you don't wear common sizes. I have short wide feet so 80% of all cowboy boots will not fit me. Years of the advice of you have to break boots in has left me with feet that will forever give me problems. When I started CAS I tried Ariats and the design of the insole hurts from the moment I stand up in them. Almost all the footwear I try on lacks the type of arch support I need, so I have to buy footwear that will accomidate orthotic insoles. Most stores strongly object to you removing the insoles from a pair of boots so that you can try them on with your custom insoles. Any more, sizes are all over the map and depending on the style/brand the size of shoe or boot I get will vary up to a size and a half from one brand to another. Comfortable, proper fitting shoes are so hard for me to find that when I do actually get a comfortable pair I buy 4 to 6 extra pairs and put them into storage because either the line will be discontinued or they change the design. I am currently on my last pair of Bates ICS boots for work. For a year or two bates quit making that particular style but recently started offering a similar line. None of the local stores carry them and will not order them. So I have to mail order from suppliers that will allow exchanging them in case they don't fit. Because of the problems I have with my feet I was talked into spending money I didn't have on earthwalkers. Was told at the time he took a casting of my foot that it would take 4 months to get them. They finally arrived 14 months later and at least 2 sizes too small. Sent them back twice both times with written descriptions of the problem and followed up with phone calls. All that effort resulted in ZERO satisfaction. Were I to meet him at a match today I would at a minimum repeatedly punch him in the nose. Those of you that can easily find comfortable footwear should consider yourselves blessed.

  13. Welcome! Don't buy any leather or more guns till you get to a shoot and do a hands-on live fire. You may well find a good deal for a used rifle and SG. While at the shoots-Look for a 'mentor' to get you started in reloading, as they will also have sources for reloading supplies at the best prices. OLG

  14. Allie Mo. I was surprised and impressed you jumped into the discussion at ar15.com. I am a member there since 2001. I had a double take when I saw your name. Thought my phone had a senior moment. GD is more chaff then wheat but some good information can be had once you ignore the idjuts. The technical forums are much better. A wealth of good information on modern guns. Most of the anti CAS commenters seem to be looking for excuses not to try the best shooting sport there is. That is their loss. The GDers complain about all shooting disciplines

  16. If I were a police officer every time I caught one of these miscreants I would give them a ride and drop them off in the DA's neighborhood. I would encourage my fellow officers to do the same. Actually, I would also include the neighborhoods of the Mayor and the City Council.

  18. I hope we all appreciate how, last week, we bemoaned the subjectivity of determining if a round is in the chamber of a long gun, and yet we can easily determine the legality of footwear based on our perception.

  22. Oh sure...49r's, Seniors, Silver Seniors, etc would love nothing better than to compete with the younger folks for a title. Just because you win your category doesn't mean you're competitive outside your category. Then you have those that win a category abandoned by the guy/gal that is now in this super performer category realising that they would of got whipped if they hadn't gone into this super duper performer category... Feeling like SASS affirmative action recipients. Great idea...

  24. If you read underneath, it does explain that many are being handled in other ways. My guess is it may be a way to ease the burden on a very busy system. I don't necessarily agree with some, but I will say I have to tend to agree with not being charged with Resisting Arrest when that's the only charge. "What are you charging me with?" "Resisting Arrest" "Then what are you arresting me for?" "Uhmmm..."

  26. Well, I'm no expert on what is or isn't appropriate footwear for Cowboy attire in CAS/SASS. However, most folks know which items are or are not in the spirit of the game. I truly understand that not everyone can wear cowboy pull-on boots.. However, there are a lot of other options. Your comment suggests using a medical condition excuse for footwear choice whether or not a shooter has a condition which limits his ability to wear western style footwear. Sorry but I don't agree with that line of thought.

  27. Watchin a syfy movie this afternoon it occurred to me that virtually every time you see a helicopter in the movies it sounds like a Huey. No matter if it’s a Blackhawk, Apache, MI-24, an Aerospatiale, or a Chinese Z-10. I guess it’s the only helicopter sound Hollywood has in it’s audio library.

  28. Howdy, A while back strike anywhere matches came up. Seems the old ones are hard to come by and some don't light reliably. I found some NEW ones, green match heads not red. And not so hard to come by...Ace is the place. irrc 1.49 for 300 box. And yes they light right up. Hope this helps a pard. Best CR

  29. Having been registered with that site for MANY years that thread confirmed to me I made a good decision to never buy a membership. As Coconino Pistolero pointed out, you can get some good information from some of the technical forums but GD is horrible. It's terribly sad how fellow shooters who claim to care about the 2nd Amendment will so readily tear down others simply because our fun is different than their fun.

  31. Based on the recommendations above, I went with Tombstone leather and I couldn't be happier. Got this rig in Saturday, just in time to use it in a match yesterday. Great rig. Very comfortable and perfect for what I was looking for. Nick was very helpful and knew exactly what I wanted when we spoke on the phone. He provided excellent service, and his time was really fast. His prices also were much lower than expected. All in all, a very good decision I don't mind saying. Here are some pics. These are his pics. I haven't taken pics of the rig with my "snake" gun in it yet.

  33. When building our house, before they poured the foundation, I ran a piece of electrical conduit from the exterior wall to the inside for a future island. A couple of months later, I told my son to stand at the stub-up where the island was going to go and catch the pull string to pull the wire through when I put some compressed air to it. Just as I knew what would happen, a mushroom of stale stagnant water deluged him. He didn't think it was near as funny as I did. Some words were used, but none were magic.

  34. I had a neuroma (Morton's) surgically removed from my right foot about his time last year. Left foot getting ready to go under the knife for it's own neuroma removal. Plus gout, that (knock on wood) has been controlled quite well. I have used sole inserts from running shoes in my boots, along with Aleve, to keep me comfortable.. We have a running shoe store close by that fits serious runners. Marathons and runs like that. If you have one close to you, it is worth the drive. Tell them what you are doing and bring your boots. They have helped me out a lot. The cortisone shots were offered. Didn't like the downside, so they were declined. There are good days and bad days. If I am at an two or three day match, I try to elevate my feet when I can. That seems to lessen the discomfort. Sometimes I have used ice, but not for more than 5 or 10 minutes. I think it's great that NNV is looking for a way to be comfortable and keep a cowboy look. But go with comfort first. I have a friend who can barely walk without athletic shoes. We all know it and he shows up for matches and helps with the posse duties. If we see him limping, we remind him to "take a seat." Contrast that with a match I attended that looked like a commercial for Rocky Boots. On shooters much younger than me. Not that younger folks can't have podiatry issues. But I think you get the picture.

  36. I am the luckiest man on earth. I have two friends with contiguous property one hour's drive from my home, and they let their friends hunt deer. I always let them know when I am coming, and I give each of them a $30 Bass Pro gift card each year, plus a couple hundred bucks for stand maintenance (they have about a dozen ladder stands set up) and they treat me like a king. One gutted my deer for me (which I am fully capable of doing for myself but he insisted) and then loaded it on his 4-wheeler and drove me and my table trophy to my van about a mile away. Find someone who has good hunting land and make friends. It is much cheaper and more enjoyable in the long run! Put your money into something else. Silver or diamonds maybe.

  40. I cut and roll crimp all my BlackMZ loads with STS, Nitro or AA hulls. It puts a nice taper like the tool above. But it won't take a star closed round and taper it. I've been looking for a cheap Super Sizer at gun shows, etc. But not found one. I watched Ebay for a while for a good deal on a used one. But they ask more for a used one than I can buy a new one. I've seen new ones on Ebay for 3x what a new one would cost!
